NFL rejects Donald Trump's calls to ban players who kneel during anthem in protestPosted Thu at 8:28am The National Football League (NFL) has rejected US President Donald Trump's calls to punish players who kneel for the national anthem to protest against racism, saying players "should" stand but that its important to "understand what it is they're protesting". Key points:
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell made clear overnight that he will take a more patient approach than the one urged by the President. Rather than using discipline, he said the league would continue to nurture players' efforts to fight racial disparities in the criminal justice system, believing this would make the urge to protest fade. "We have about six or seven players that are involved in this protest at this point," Goodell told reporters after a two-day meeting with team owners and the players' labour union in New York City, saying he hoped that number would eventually be zero.
The commissioner cited bail reform and ending mandatory sentences as justice topics of concern for players. In contrast to Mr Trump, who has scorned any player who protests as a "son of a bitch" who should face suspension, Goodell praised the athletes as political activists trying to improve their communities. But Mr Trump was quick to slam Goodell's approach on Twitter.
It was the most recent in a series of semi-regular rebukes since he first expressed his disdain for the protests at a rally in September. On Wednesday (local time) Mr Trump expressed his anger at the previous day's news that the NFL rulebook, which says players "should" stand for the anthem but stops short of mandating it, was not being changed any time soon.
While the President and the league appeared to have reached a stalemate, some fans have said they are heeding Mr Trump's calls to boycott games while the kneeling continues, which the US President says is unpatriotic and an insult to the country's military veterans. Players kneeling during the national anthem are protesting at the killing of unarmed black men and boys by police across the United States, as well as racial disparities in the criminal justice system — more than half of all NFL players are black. Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who first popularised the gesture last year, said he settled on kneeling as a form of protest because it is widely seen as a gesture of respect. More players have begun kneeling since Mr Trump criticised the practice, and some sympathetic teammates have linked arms with the kneelers while standing themselves. Some of the league's 32 team owners, including Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys, have said they will bench players who do not stand for the anthem. Goodell said the question of what individual teams might do had not come up during the meeting. Instead, he said, the team owners generally agreed it was important to listen to players' concerns. |

I can no more claim to be a Republican than I could claim to be a Democrat. But, in each party, some individuals stand out as special, even superior, for one reason or another.
Occasionally someone stands out for a variety of reasons, one of those is John McCain. A war hero, a man battling a terminal disease but continuing to work despite aggressive cancer treatments, for the good of the American people and, above all, a man of honor. He embodies everything that should make America proud. His public spats with Trump do the orange Nazi no favors. They are in the same bloody party for God's sake! McCain is a seasoned politician, who understands how things work. I might disagree with him on some issues, but I cannot fault either his wisdom, his political knowledge or his determination to do the right thing. He is a deeply honorable man. Trump has insulted him more than once. Yet McCain appears to hold no grudge. One more positive character trait in the extensive list of his sterling personal qualities. We were already aware that you have no sense of decency and no personal restraint, Trump. Leave the man alone. You are not worthy to lick his boots. Your insults of such a great man just make you look smaller, meaner and more petty.

Obamacare probably was a small improvement on what came before, but admittedly, not much of one. For every couple of people it helped, it hurt one. It still was an improvement overall though. Trumpcare looks to hurt three or four for every one it helps and reduce the whole Union's ability to withstand any disease outbreak.
The Iran deal is far from perfect, but way better than no deal. Cancelling it would destabilize the whole Middle East, damage the new Iranian government, which is (slowly) moving in a more moderate direction (which was a very good thing) and damage America's international respect. You will all end up labelled as dishonest in your dealings and unable to keep your word if it fails. Generally this is a terrible thing, but it becomes even worse if you then try to negotiate with North Korea. Trump is not stupid, far from it. So, he must have some idea how unwise these courses of action are. Could his hatred for black people be driving these policies? Does he think "If Obama did it it must be Bad."? Surely his advisors must know how dangerous his actions are, especially where Iran is concerned. Are they not talking to him? Or is he just so deeply racist he can't listen?

a little more on our PSEUDO PATRIOT President
Trump Disrespects the Flag on Live Television (VIDEO)https://www.redstate.com/sweetie15/2017/10/12/trump-disrespects-flag-live-television-video/
Because everything is to honor the gilded toad. Hannity didn’t stand either. He was too wrapped up in his euphoric feelings of total love. While some members of the crowd in attendance appear to be appropriately recognizing the event, Trump babbles on.
Because ratings are more important than honoring our flag. |

How is kneeling an insult? Half my family kneels when they pray? When I was eight my family visited my uncle who was stationed at Ft. Knox, Ky. We went to an amusement park that had "white" and "colored" water fountains. It was hot and the line at the "white" fountain was long and there was no one at the "colored" fountain. Even at eight years old I knew this was very stupid!
I've lived in the South most of my life and I've spent the last 60 years trying to change things. I thought we had made more progress! How have we come to this? White supremacist and Nazi sympathizers running our government? All of my mother and fathers brothers and sisters fought in WWII. They are all rolling over in there graves! This right wing movement must be stopped! |

Carbon, I know what you mean about the whole racist thing. As a kid in the 1940s and early 50s, I had a few Maori friends. Some people did not like this and it used to really annoy me, because I did not understand the racist thing then and I used to just think they were crazy. However, I took a lot of crap from the English, because my mother, who had black hair and slanted eyes, was derided as being Japanese. Believe me, when the English want to bully, or hold grudges, they can do it 'sure as hell' with a will.
But I still would not insult the flag of England, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia, Canada or the USA. Because, I have friends and relatives from all of those countries and many of my relatives, and probably yours, laid down their lives for my generation and my children and grandchildren. Those flags are the symbol of the courage, freedom and democracy which we all enjoy now. I would rather stand outside the head guy's house and shout insults at him and ask him if he had the guts to come outside and face me 'man to man'. However, I don't think Trump really gives a damn about the flag, the country, the people in it or any of their allies. He just wants to be the big boss and show off. All chimpanzees compete to be the alpha male. Unfortunately, racist power-hungry morons like him (yes I can call a man with his IQ a moron - mine tested out at 151 on the Cattell scale) just want to show off and be the big 'I AM'. But, going by the time empires have lasted in history, he might be one of the last left to be in a position to show off -as the leader of the most powerful nation on Earth.

I have no problem whatsoever with these protests. The Viet Nam era protests were far more violent, and that was also a just cause.
There have been far, far too many minorities dying at the hands of officers, primarily (but not exclusively) white officers. This reflects poor training, a vast cultural void, and lack of understanding on all sides. If officers can't keep their weapons holstered unless there is real risk, they should be issued pea shooters. |

The National Anthem isn't even American, and other fun facts about it and the flag
https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017/10/9/1705621/-The-National-Anthem-isn-t-even-American-and-other-fun-facts-about-it-and-the-flag a little history lesson that a lot of people aren't going to like including our failed President and his lap doggy Pence both of whom are perfect examples of FAKE patriots For some they are symbols of what America is. For others they are symbols of what America is not. But in the end they are just symbols, with no force of law or legal protection. Which is as it should be, because as much as Trump and Pence want to claim our military fought and died for these symbols, the vast majority of them will tell you they didn’t fight for a piece of cloth or a song with British-written music. Most will tell you they fought for the freedom for you and me to view those symbols however we want, without reprisal, punishment or government interference. |

Who else besides athletes have to stand for the National Anthem before starting work? The simple answer for the owners is not to have the players come out until it's over!
They've admitted it was planned. What a waste of the tax payers money! |

Oh I firmly believe in freedom of speech, but I also believe in a time and place. MMMMM how about a non-violent march on Washington as a protest? Or a non-violent march in your own capital city as a protest? Do it on your OWN time? These people are at WORK when they are "protesting" they are getting paid by their employers. Who gets to protest when they are at WORK? Any time I have gone to a non-violent protest, whether it be a protest against war, nuclear power plant being built, etc. it was done in my free time, not when I was being paid by my employer and I was working. If there was a march on Washington, would people take notice? They would have to....And yes the VETERANS and the current ACTIVE DUTY are the ones they can thank for being able to kneel down on the ground to protest. So yes I will continue to stand for the National Anthem to respect those that FIGHT to provide that freedom for us. To show respect to the men and women who have PTSD, have lost arms and legs, who have come back with drug and alcohol problems to forget. I live 10 miles from a military base, 20 miles from a Veterans Center/nursing home, I was raised as a military brat, I was a military wife, I know what sacrifices these people and their families go through to give us our FREEDOM of SPEECH.

I absolutely agree with you, Penham 100%.
I too am a member of a minority group, being legally Irish. We have been starved, tortured, refused education and even refused the right to our own language at one point in history. My daughter has been spat at, snubbed and called "Irish filth". When my father and I in 1960 were looking for temporary accommodation, having just moved house, we saw a sign "Flat to let" and went to see it. When my father opened his mouth to ask for details, the person letting the flat pointed to a sign and slammed the door in our faces. The sign read: "No Blacks No Dogs No Irish." A black man standing by the sign looked angrily at my father and I, as we turned away laughing. He said to my father: "What do you find to damn funny?" My father replied: "I'm Irish. At least you came before the dog!" The three of us then went and had a drink together in the local Irish pub. That Jamaican guy, who incidentally remained a friend until he died in the 1980s, told us horrific tales of prejudice that he had encountered. He had served in the British army, as my father had. I have served my country in the forces and in many other ways and I would never disrespect the British flag or the Irish tricolor. I also, in the forces, at RAF Northolt, which had USAF personnel there and raised your flag regularly, stood to attention for the flag with hand on heart, as did they if they were not in uniform, if they were they stood to attention and saluted. This is a matter of respect and friendship between brothers in arms. if we did not like or agree with a particular politician, when I became a civilian, we would wear a large badge with a nameless labour (Democrat) Prime Minister with his head in a bucket. This was a gross insult to the person, not to the nation or its flag. Incidentally, the bucket had the words: "Sh!t head" printed on it. It would work just as well for a Tory (Republican) I can't say that I would not be inclined to punch someone in the face if I saw them insulting "Old Glory", as I still have strong memories of American friends, many of whom fell in Vietnam. 'And they are not all white. I am very pleased to say, that I have friends of all faiths, races and nationalities, like me.

I appreciate your point, Penny, but beg to differ.
I support the protests, partly because something needs to be said (and this says it very loudly) and partly because I believe Trump is making things worse instead of improving them. Respect for people in the forces is a large part of my supporting the protesters. Many brave military people died to preserve the right to free speech. Exercising it may carry an implied insult: - but not to them. So, I disagree, but cherish your right to disagree with me. Ps., America is a pretty great country! There is still room for improvement though.

Is Trump's feud with kneeling football players personal or politics?By Lucia Stein Updated about 4 hours ago United States President Donald Trump has been quite vocal over the past few weeks about footballers protesting during the national anthem, which began last year as a symbolic protest about police violence against racial minorities. This time, Mr Trump weighed in following a walkout by Vice President Mike Pence on a National Football League (NFL) game in his home state of Indiana after some players knelt during the national anthem. But why is this issue being given so much attention? Here's what we know about the spat. What has Trump previously said?Mr Trump first raised his objection to the protesters in September at a rally in deep southern Alabama. At the time, he told a crowd of supporters that "we're proud of our country, we respect our flag … wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, 'Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, out, he's fired. He's fired!'" Following this statement, a number of supporters hit back at Mr Trump, who responded with a number of tweets that again criticised the protest. Why is the issue being given so much attention?David Smith, academic director of the US Studies Centre at the University of Sydney, says Mr Trump has really taken to this issue to re-establish his conservative credentials. "I think that he did feel that there was some danger that he was alienating his own conservative base when he started negotiating with some Democrats about the status of illegal children in the United States and when he started negotating with Democrats about the budget," he told the ABC. "Once he showed that he was willing to compromise with Democrats on those issues, there was a right-wing backlash against him and I think he felt he needed to get his base back. "So he seized on this issue, which up until this point had been an issue but not a huge issue in the United States — it had been the sort of thing that got play in the sports media, but not really in the media more broadly. "So he seized on this issue at a rally in Alabama, where football is basically a religion, where he was speaking to an overwhelmingly white audience in a state with a history of segregation. "He really took this issue and used it to re-establish his conservative credentials and once he saw how much attention it was getting him, he kept on about it all that weekend and what it led to was hundreds of players participating in these protests, when only a few players had participated originally. "He made it a lot bigger than it was originally." Was the walkout planned? Some have questioned whether Mr Pence had planned to walk out on the NFL game between the Colts and San Francisco 49ers on Sunday afternoon (local time). Suspicions were first raised after Mr Pence quickly releasing a statement and took to Twitter to explain his actions, using the opportunity to upload a cover photo of himself standing during the anthem. "I left today's Colts game because President Trump and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem," he said in the statement.
The possibility was given further weight once the President tweeted that it was his idea, writing that he "asked @VP Pence to leave stadium if any players kneeled, disprespecting out country".
The likelihood of a player kneeling was quite high, given the 49ers have protested a number of times during NFL anthems since 2016. NBC national correspondent Peter Alexander indicated that the media had been clued in, saying that "reporters were told to stay in their van because "there may be an early depature from the game". Other media outlets have also reported that Mr Pence was due to fly out shortly after the game to Los Angeles, suggesting that if the walkout was planned, the stunt came at the cost of taxpayers.
Is this a race issue? The ABC's John Barron wrote last month that Mr Trump's spat with some of the most prominent sporting stars in America is "not about patriotism, or even sport. Despite his protestations, it is about race". Dr Smith agrees, noting that throughout the primaries and the US election campaign, Mr Trump "rode a wave of backlash against Black Lives Matter". "Ever since 2012, when Travon Martin was killed and Barack Obama said if he had a son he would look like Travon, there has been a very, very racialised debate about violence against African-Americans, violence by police and violence against police," he said. "And a lot of white conservatives believe the Black Lives Matter movement is an anti-police movement, a movement that advocates violence against police and a movement that threatens law and order in the United States — Donald Trump is firmly on that side of the debate. "And by saying that NFL owners should kick players off the team if they protest against police violence by taking the knee, he was very much putting himself on the side of white conservative Americans who feel threatened by the Black Lives Matter movement." Could it also be personal?Dr Smith suggests that there could be another underlying factor behind these attacks, a personal vendetta. "This probably reflects a long-held frustration that he has, which is twice he was not allowed to buy a NFL team because he didn't have the money and the NFL though he'd be a financial risk," he said. "He has long had issues with the NFL and he has a long history of complaining about the NFL on Twitter." Dr Smith said he also thinks the amount of media attention that this has generated could also explain Mr Trump's focus. "When Trump gets behind an issue like this, and gets a lot of attention behind it, he's going to keep at it. He'll probably speak out whenever he sees it on TV," he said. Does this contradict with the idea of freedom of speech?Despite Dr Smith suggesting this is a way of allowing Mr Trump to play to his support base, some have also criticised the President and Vice President for impeding on free speech. NFL legend and sports analyst for Fox, Terry Bradshaw, has previously criticised the President for attacking players for exercising their "freedom". "While I don't condone the protest during our national anthem, this is America. If our country stands for anything, folks, what, it's freedom," he said in September. "People die for that freedom. I'm not sure if our President understands those rights, that every American has the right to speak out and also to protest." Can the President actually do anything about protests?Mr Trump has nothing to do with policing or with regulating sport so for him its a "symbolic issue," Dr Smith said. "It's the President's way of saying, 'I'm on the side of the police' and also the fact that these protests happen around the national anthem. "It makes it appear to Mr Trump and his supporters, that the protesting against police violence and racism is actually protesting against America itself, it's anti-American." |

Well I am a minority and I disagree. I am Native American and I stand for the National Anthem as respect to our Veterans and active duty military, to include my uncle who was a Comanche Code Talker, my father who served in the US Army and my ex who served in the US Navy and my son-in-law who is currently in the US Navy. I live in a military community. Not all people of color agree with this. By the way, I am NOT a Trump supporter either.

Vice President Mike Pence walks out of NFL game after players kneel during anthemPosted about an hour ago US Vice President Mike Pence has walked out of a National Football League (NFL) game in his home state of Indiana after some players knelt during the national anthem, a form of demonstration that began last year as a symbolic protest about police violence against racial minorities. "I left today's Colts game because President Trump and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our flag, or our national anthem," Mr Pence said in a statement issued by the White House. President Donald Trump has criticised players sharply for the protests and has pressed the NFL to ban them, despite the right to participate in such a protest being protected by the US Constitution's First Amendment. On Sunday, Mr Trump praised the Vice President for taking his side and following his requests.
Critics of players kneeling at the pre-game playing of the national anthem, including Mr Trump, object to any protest, regardless of its merits, during a ceremony meant to honour the US flag and military veterans. Mr Pence, who has gone out of his way to demonstrate loyalty to Mr Trump, said in his statement it was important to rally around the flag and things that unite the country.
"I stand with President Trump, I stand with our soldiers, and I will always stand for our flag and our national anthem." |
