Global Pandemics Are ComingtheTrumpet.com-4 hours ago The issue at that time was, and continues to be, the H7N9 Asian bird flu. This virus originated in Chinese poultry. When passed from animal to human, it is extremely deadly. Time reported that 41 percent of people infected with H7N9 died from “severe respiratory problems.” What held the Asian bird flu back from ravaging ...

A century after 1918 flu pandemic, experts say it could happen againhttps://www.upi.com/https:/www.upi.com/Health_News/2018/02/07/A-century-after-1918-flu-pandemic-experts-say-it-could-happen-again/6511518018027/ WEDNESDAY, Feb. 7, 2018 -- One hundred years ago, the deadliest influenza pandemic of all time made a ravaging march across the globe. The "Spanish" flu of 1918-19 infected an estimated one-third of the world's population and killed between 50 million and 100 million people, modern epidemiologists estimate. That raises the inevitable question as the United States battles its way through another severe flu season -- could a pandemic as devastating in scope occur in the future? |

Thanks, Kilt! Good research as always!
We are facing a "perfect storm" situation....increasing odds of an avian flu reassortment (H7N9 most likely), coupled with decreasing funding for pandemic response!! As an expert in pandemic epidemiology response, I can attest to this: Time and again, diseases flare up, governments throw money at the problem, the crisis recedes, and funding dries up. It happened after anthrax attacks in 2001 alerted people to the risk of bioterrorism. It happened in 2003, after sars showed people how quickly a new disease could spread around the globe. The world is caught in a cycle of panic and neglect.

Satori, I read that article you posted, it was excellent. The thing that struck me most about it were the reports of how people looked after themselves only and would not come to the aid of their neighbours and even other family members, such was the fear of the flu. Even with public calls for volunteers to step up and help, no one came.
Would it be the same today? Yes, i think it would, most definitely. We are even more self centred and selfish today than people were 100 years ago. The article speaks of people, adults and children, dying from starvation and thirst because none of their neighbours would bring them food or water because they were so afraid of catching the disease. This highlights, to me, the importance of having to hand a supply of easily accessible food and drink that needs no cooking or preparation. If you were lying, in an extremely weakened state at home, you might not have the energy to cook something or go and look for water. Up until now, living on a farm, and being surrounded by food in it's most basic state, I haven't bothered with tinned foods as we don't eat them, but in light of this, i think I will get in a 2 - 3 week supply of things that we could eat cold by just opening a tin. It's an aspect of being prepared I had foolishly never considered. Thanks for posting the link.

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

[Totally unscientific view ->] Somehow I don't expect a pandemic this year...nature seems to work on a general pattern and while we are over due for the BIG ONE (flu-wise) nature does not seem to respect the special numbers we respond to....special numbers like 100 years.
On planning or lack of planning, I believe there is (but not necessarily one that I subscribe to) a conspiracy view that the lack of planning for the wider public is in fact part of a plan to reduce population levels |
