Of course it is!  It is probably the dumbest thing he has done yet.

Yes, it increases profits, briefly.

But then, those you raised tarifs against, raise tarifs against you.  So you end up back where you started.

Except, now you have made an enemy, or if you are very, very, very lucky, you just made your friend very cross.  Either way it is a retrograde step.

The Great Negotiator, in fact, seems to be making a habit of misunderstanding deals, making a hasty decision, and then trying to reverse course. According to Politico, Trump is so upset by the omnibus spending bill—which he reportedly didn’t read before signing—that he is “moving ahead with plans” to reopen the legislation to claw back some $60 billion. It’s unlikely to happen, and would barely put a dent in the $1.3 trillion bill, anyway, but that’s Trump: begging your negotiating partners to give you concessions after you’ve already given away the farm. Just like in The Art of the Deal.

Ps. - to my previous comment, I should add:

In addition to the trade war that protectionist policies can start, which are bad enough, there can be other nasty consequences.  As the cost of raw materials and component part imports rise, this can damage the American companies relying upon them for their manufacturing; - sometimes fatally.

The only route to fiscal stability is free trade.  Protectionist policies only look good to the blind or stupid.

I wonder which Trump is...........................................................................
