Sharp increases of syphilis among newborns underscore need for improved testing and treatment for pregnant women
New data from CDC’s STD Surveillance Report show congenital syphilis cases have more than doubled since 2013, reaching a total of 918 cases in 2017 alone. Following CDC’s screening and treatment recommendations for pregnant women is critical. All women should be tested for syphilis early in their pregnancy, and women at risk for syphilis should be tested at the beginning of the third trimester (approximately 28 weeks’ gestation) and again at delivery.
