Mystery disease claims 20 in CAR’s northwest

Published on 27.09.2018 at 18h21 by APA News

Local authorities in Baboua and Abba, two suburban prefectures in the northwest of the Central African Republic, have announced the deaths of at least 20 people after the outbreak of a mysterious disease in the area.In a statement on Thursday, local authorities appealed for help to deal with the strange illness, which afflicts victims with acute flu accompanied by coughing.

People suffering from bronchial diseases or asthma succumb quickly after contracting flu.

According to them, the victims cough out blood and have trouble breathing, which quickly lead to their death.

Yes, many coughed blood in 1918; it's a cytokine storm thing.

As I've reported before, this winter (which has just ended, we're now in spring) here in NZ we've had a very infectious cold / flu illness doing the rounds that includes 2 days of fever, flu like symptoms, runny nose and ends with a very deep, long lasting cough that lasts 6 weeks, making the illness last 8 weeks in total.

I had it and was given antibiotics, and I know of a number of other friends who were also prescribed antibiotics for secondary infections. It took me another 4-6 weeks to recover my energy levels.

The interesting thing is that we've recently had a news report published that said this has been one of the mildest flu seasons on record, and yet almost every one has had this terrible cold. I can't help but wonder if it's a precursor to a nastier version we can look forward to next season.
Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

That happened in the 1918 flu as well. The first wave was a killer of a few thousand. The second wave killed millions.

In neither case (NZ or CAR) does it mean that this will happen, but it is something to watch out for.

kilt5 had a post in the Avian Flu section of this forum-over 80.000 US dead due to flu season 2017/18 https://www.wdbj7.com/content/news/80000-people-died-of-flu-last-winter-in-US-494566981.html

Here in the Netherlands we also did see a "severe flu season" wich was deadly for the elderly (65+). Active virusses were:
A-H3N2 and A-H1N1 (pandemic 2009) and B (Victoria and Yamagata). There was also a reported case of a new virus A-H1N2, proberbly due the person getting both H3N2 and H1N1 virus and developing the A-H1N2 reassortant virus. https://www.rivm.nl/Documenten_en_publicaties/Algemeen_Actueel/Nieuwsberichten/2018/Tijdens_routineonderzoek_nieuwe_variant_griepvirus_gevonden (in Dutch-it was a mild-flu case)

Part of-via google translate-https://www.rivm.nl/Onderwerpen/G/Griep/Surveillance/Stand_van_zaken_griep:

Monitoring mortality rates

Every year doctors report influenza as the primary (underlying) cause of death of the deceased in a limited number of deaths. In the direct cause of death to another cause of death, influenza may have played a role, even if it is not mentioned on the death certificate. In collaboration with the CBS (DJ- Central Bureau for Statistics), statistical models estimate whether excess mortality is based on the total mortality (all causes of death). During the flu epidemic in the winter of 2017/2018, mortality in the age group 65 years and older was greatly increased in the Netherlands compared to the mortality this time of year is expected. Since week 50 in 2017, total mortality (all causes of death) has increased significantly in the Netherlands. This coincides exactly with the current influenza epidemic. Influenza is one of the possible causes of excess mortality, but it can also be caused by a hot or cold period, or other infections.
We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.
