Palestinians declare emergency over bird flu
21 Mar 2006 11:31:42 GMT Source: Reuters RAMALLAH, West Bank, March 21 (Reuters) - The Palestinian Authority on Tuesday declared a state of emergency in hope of preventing the spread of the fatal H5N1 bird flu virus, which struck Israel last week. "The government has declared the state of emergency," outgoing Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurie told reporters ahead of a cabinet meeting. Azzam Tbaileh, a top Palestinian agriculture official, told Reuters that there have been no cases of H5N1 bird flu so far in Palestinian areas. "The state of emergency means we will use all our resources and all our abilities to prevent bird flu from reaching our areas and to deal with (it)," Tbaileh said. Israel has poisoned hundreds of thousands of turkeys and chickens in a bid to contain its H5N1 outbreak. http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L717355660.htm |

'Mistakes made in handling bird flu' By JPOST.COM STAFF "We made a mistake in handling the birds' carcasses, and from now on, we kill and bury," Agriculture Minister Ze'ev Boim announced at Tuesday's special Knesset meeting dealing with the recent outbreak of avian flu in Israel. Boim said that the government had not yet decided whether to declare the spread of avian flu a "natural disaster." JPOST.COM HIT LIST JPost.com's most popular articles this past week The Agriculture Ministry confirmed that the H5N1 strain of bird flu was responsible for the deaths of poultry at Kibbutz Nir Oz and the community of Amioz in the western Negev. The two communities have been ordered to cull thousands of birds, as has the poultry processing plant "Of Kor" in She'ar Hanegev, which recently received shipments of poultry from Amioz. Boim noted that Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert had established a steering committee meant to present suggestions on the issue. Boim pointed out that at first it was difficult to find people willing to enter the infected areas and chicken coops to handle the dead birds; the problem was later solved. During the Finance Committee meeting, Health Ministry director-general Prof. Avi Yisraeli said "I wouldn't be surprised if one or two people got infected by bird flu, although we don't expect it right now." The Agriculture Ministry was hoping to finish destroying 800,000 birds by this weekend, in order to prevent the spread of the infection. In order to aid the process, 150 people from the Defense Ministry were going to join the destruction efforts on Tuesday. The estimated cost of the bird killings stands around NIS 4.5 million. Despite the Agriculture Ministry's insistence that bird flu is "under control," the virus was found in two other locations in the South on Monday. In addition, Channel 2 reported that Moshav Kinneret in the North may also have been infected, and the fowl there have been tested, with results to be announced on Tuesday. * GOOD MAP AND GRAPHICS AT LINK BELOW http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1139395647571&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull |
