"Researchers in Shanghai have managed to develop a genetically-engineered vaccine for the H7N9 virus.

The prototype vaccine has already passed preliminary testing in laboratory mice.

The mice tested negative for the virus 30 days after being inoculated and exposed to the bird flu virus.

Xu Jianqing is with the Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center for infectious diseases.

"European researchers have developed two inactivated H7 avian influenza vaccines, but clinical experiments have shown failure results. We found a similar problem in our research. Having considered the risk of failure of using an inactivated H7 vaccine, we switched to the other solution, which is genetically engineering a vaccine."

Researchers are now applying to launch clinical experiments for the newly developed vaccine.

Research and development is also underway for the creation of antibodies against the H7N9 virus.

This work could lead to a cure for those already infected with the virus.
