I was wondering if anyone plans to use a water purifier along with storing water. I read about one called MSR MOIX that is supose to kill any virus and you can use it on large amounts of water. It is suppose to be what the military uses.

It uses salt and lithium batteries. It is this small little think that makes this powerful solution that you add to the water. It comes with test strips to test the water for safety.

Has anyone else heard of this or does anyone have one. Before I spend $100 on this thing I would like to have other people's opinion.

I figured I'd fill up my pool and use water from that along with storage.

May God protect us all.

I researched it because I was impressed with it's claims.  Apparently it does what it says but the thing is so damn small I think it's almost useless.  It wont even filter a glass of water in one "filtering" because it is so small.
I'm not afraid, I'm paranoid. Dont talk too loud, they are listening.

The above tells how to make a cheap purifier using charcoal, socks and empty water bottles. This is how I plan to purify my rain water the use the AquaPak for added measure.

Also AquaPak a solar water pastuerizer sells for $20-

New here and hope to offer what knowledge I have.

I have used the Miox purifier. I believe it to be the best "all around" purifier. The purifier actually does purify quite a bit of water at one time up to 4 liters at a time. The science of it is the solution you put back into the container you are purifying. that is the beauty of it. No large filters to crack or replace. Easily carry inside a bug out bag etc. Don't let the size fool you, this is a powerful purifier. I have Marine buddy's and they use it in Iraq. All you really need is salt and batteries to replace after a while. Again, small but powerful.
For mass amounts of water, a pump purifier would be better I think. But I am thinking in terms of, what can I use efficiently at home for a family of 5 and still  take with me quickly if I need to in a back pack (bug out).

Hope this helps.

Thanks Scott! I'll be ordering mine this week. I've read about it and from what I've heard, the only draw back is a chlorine taste, like drinking pool water. If it's clean and pure and going to help my family,4 of us, survive, than I don't really care if it tastes like pool water.

I really appreciate your feedback.

May God protect us all.

If you do not have a water filter you can pour water into a few coffee filters to remove sediment. Add 16 drops of bleach per gallon, let sit for 30 minutes, boil it, allow to cool and you should be okay. I have Pur filters on my faucets for the city water. I have a genny for the well in case the City water system goes offline.

Nice thread about portable filters http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=123&t=42 7139&page=1

May I suggest taking a look at a Bio-Sand filter.  Basically a slow sand filter, by using a particular size sand, size, and low flow rate, your filter will develop a biologically active layer on top that has significant cleansing and purification properties, including anti-viral capabilities.  Its advantage is that it is incredibly low-tech (use some sort of barrel or concrete tub and you can sort the sand from a river or beach), can provide significant amounts of water from gravity feed, and simple to maintain.  I would want an alternative water pruification process for the time when you must disturb the biologically active layer for backwash or while it is initially starting.  Adding a little chlorine could be good if an illness is very active around you or dead bodies are in the river.  Some researchers in India found it even provided a significant reduction in nitrates, which is a problem in the well water around my area.

But very effective against e.coli, giardia, cryptosporidium, some dissolved metals and minerals, coliforms, and other bad stuff.   Make it as big as you like! Showers!  Yeah!

http://www.therangerdigest.com/ This is where I found the information on making emergency water filters and purification techniques. The solar AquaPak is from another site. Just do a search and will come up.

R.O. is both power and water hungry, also doesn't do much for viruses in the water.  Add to all that being slow and low volume for big bucks and R. O. looks like a waste of time to me.

The sand filters with a U.V. final stage are the most bang for the buck!

Construction of a BioSand system, cheap parts and easy to build, I think I may buy the parts for several to keep for giving to those in need.  These parts and some dry chlorine could help lots of people for very little!

While in the service I learned of a CHEAP way to filter water, but it does not purity it.

  1. First cut off the bottom portion of a trouser or denim leg (pants) about 18 inches or so.
  2. Then layer rocks and sand alternating the two with several layers.
  3. Finally tie the one end off with rope and place another rope that can hang at the other end. Which can hang from a tree and filter the rain water, just place a bucket under to catch the filtered rain water. Even if it is tied off the filtered water will make its way down out of it.

How to purify water:

  1. Purification Tablets as directed
  2. Pouring 5 drops of 2 percent tincture of iodine in a canteen full of clear water and 10 drops in a canteen full of cloudy or cold water. Let sit for 30 minutes before drinking
  3. Boiling water for 1 minute at sea level, adding 1 minute for each additional 1,00 feet above sea level or boil for 10 minutes no matter what elevation.
