Maybe we can start a new threat that lists recipes that are simple to make. I am not much of a cook and wouldn't know what to do with cormeal and flour without some sort of recipe (and even then i'm not sure it would come out right--that's why i've stored lots of CANNED goods)

Anyone have any quick, simple recipes tha you can share ?? if you want, post them to a new topic "Recipes "

provisioning has more to do with the caculation of calories maybe this will help 1 person for one year require's 730,000 calories @ 2000 calories per day.  Carbohydrates yeild about 800 cal per pound (#) Fats yeild about 1,900 calories per pound and protien about 800 calories per pound. if you make a mix of carbs 50% you need 450 pound's, 30% fat 120 pounds. 20% protien 200 pounds. If your going to use cans you should also calculate the caloric value try to get at least 50 % carbohydrate and keep the empty caloric diet stuff out. Your buget dictates the rest

I am relying on can foods and dried foods. I have bought rice and sugar

flour as a back up.  I also bought lots of cake mixes to add with the canned fruit and nuts. I find they bake ok even without eggs .  I am staging my buying I figure the longer the flu takes to get hear the better I will live, so food first then dry goods and elctronics then extras

I have several lists Food, electronics, paper products, last minute extras

i bought rice and canned meat and dried nuts and beans than canned fruit then cake mixes, sugar, flour and pastas and sauses, I then will buy seeds.  I debatted the garden idea for a while but I think the looters will die off quickly and you will need to replenish your food source.

I think starvation will kill out people quickly  I figure anyone left will  all have gardens and lots of seeds.  Even if you live in a apartment I think you should have seeds. You may stay at friends and your seeds will be valuable.and I feel that those are left will gladly let you plant a garden or you may find  a open field to garden

survival has a few rules one of them is the rule of 3 that's 3 minutes without air 3 days without water and 3 week's with out food are life ending. Another rule is that there are alway exceptions to the rule. I think it maxs out out at 5

Being prepared for something is not about survival - thats just life.  A survival situation is being unprepared for the unexpected.  When that happens . . . think, everyone has McGiver moments (dates me and I can't  spell).

Being unprepared for for the unexpected is crusing in nuetral asleep at the wheel. That's not life its just not taking responcabilty for your actions. Survival has nothing to do with dumb luck.

I learned a lesson my first week as an EMT in the field.  Driving back from the hospital, in the middle of the night, my partner (who was driving)  braked sharply, and yelled. "We're being shot at. What's our 10-20?!"  (location)

Being new at this sort of thing, I said, "Huh?"

He looked at me gravely. He said "You never know when the unexpected will happen. You always need to know where you are, and what's going on around you. Fail to pay attention, and you can get you and me killed. If you had to radio for help, call for backup, you'd better damn well know where you are at all times."

Situational awareness. Paying attention.  Knowing the threats around you.  It can save your life.

He pulled that drill on me several more times. After that night, you can bet I always knew where we were.

you can use food grade Diatomaceous earth.  It will keep all of your basic staples for a very long time.  Flour, meal, rice beans and so on.  I didn't put it in my sugar.  Look on the internet under it's name.  Here is the phone number for the company I used.  You could call and ask them questions.  I still have food from my y2k prep and not one bug. 505-873-3061

Regarding the garden thoughts:

I am worried that perhaps birds and other animals will be into the garden as they do each and every year.  I don's want to eat tainted garden food, any thoughts?

Regarding outdoor pets:

We are housing 3 dogs, 2 are ours and 1 is my step-daughters who does not have a place to keep him.  I cannot have these 3 knuckle heads in my home, they would rip it apart.  Even though I have 5 bedrooms they will probably all be full with someone or something.  Will they survive outside or should I be worried that starving person may eat them or they might get the BF?  Again, any thoughts?

It might be a good idea to get any overdue dental
work done in the near future. Best to get that out of the way.
