This thread is a spinoff from the "you know you are a prepper" when thread.
Someone on that thread made this comment... You know you're a prepper when the Walmart register clerk greets you by name and calls for extra help to bag your order! (& you haven't unloaded it onto the belt yet.) Does anyone even wonder if say, walmart is watching for people that prep? I mean, if someone is buying huge amounts a supplies each week, do you think there is a way for them to track that? Would they bother? Has anyone thought about this enough to make sure they rotate where they shop as to now arouse suspicion? |

If you pay with cash instead of debit or credit card, how will they know who you are?
ANYTHING that is paid for with plastic can be tracked. You had better beilieve that huge databases exist detailing the shopping habits of anyone who uses plastic to pay for purchases.

for the prefered buyer cards, I have one that tracks to my ex's name at an old address for Safeway. For Albertsons, I use a phone number that is attached to a card that is in the name of some other relatives at an address they no longer live at.
TIP: Grocery stores will accept a phone number if you say you don't have your card with you. All you need is a number that is on file as belonging to someone with a card. You could even sign up for a card using a phony name/address/phone number and pass the number around for all of your friends to use.

So do you buy everything with cash? Sounds sensible and smart, but I haven't done it.

I NEVER use credit cards......there are large databases that track everything you buy.....Sound a bit paranoid? Ya bet.

Just got back from Wal-Mart. Our cart was literally overflowing. If ya picture the average cart, food was stacked in ours about a foot or so above the top, and there were several more items on the shelf thingy at the bottom. Did anyone look at us strangely? Nope. We've been going about once a week or so, getting stuff and we have yet to see another person as loaded down as us, or get any comments whatsoever. I've heard of head in the sand, but this is unreal...

Cat, Walmart has the most sophisticated inventory system on the planet! They track each and every single purchase, so they can immediately re-order. Of course, any decent data-base can be sorted any which way. Certain bulk purchases are probably best done in cash.

SAM'S CLUB -- At check out they first ask for your club card and scan it. That stores your shopping history with them. From what you buy to how you pay (cash, check, card). I have a business card there and needed a receipt for my records (large depreciation items) . That's when I found out they could go back one year with no problem, back to your first purchase, but would involve longer more detailed search for them. |

I think the government might care, if they plan to confiscate supplies from people to share with other people in the event that there is a shortage of supplies. What an easy way for them to just ask Walmart for the info, they could then go into areas and confiscate and redistribute. Now I am not saying this is going to happen or if the government would even be bothered (depends how bad it gets) but it certainly COULD be a possibility. It doesn't harm to think things through and entertain all possibilities, because we just don't know.....

But if things really got that bad wouldnt the govt just walk into walmart and take stock? Why would they bother taking preps from a small family or group, just to give it to another group? Sounds like alot of energy expended for very little gain.Besides that you would draw attention to yourself anyway playing secret squirels, making up pretend cover stories to tell store clerks that will forget you once you move away from the counter anyway.
Yes, there are information networks post 911 set up to establish suspect activities. (I work in law enforcement) Alarm bells are triggered by the purchase of any large amount of the same product with cash!
If you do get fingered, you might then get a late night visit and be forced to explain for the next week that you are just prepping for BF.
Just be up front about things, use cards etc, when you start acting in a covert manner you WILL draw attention.
Paranoia is one thing we have to watch out for I think.

I often get asked what I'm doing - I say we're stocking a cabin we just bought.
That always leads to a nice conversation about camping, marshmallows & bugs. And besides, they can't track the stuff - they have no way of knowing where our bug-out place is. |

The thinking about "Big Brother"Walmart is not extreme. I was commenting to a clerk about the temp. being uncomfortable in the store. They said the temp. cannot be adjusted because it is regulated by satellite to all Walmart stores as a money saving function-as they were told by management. Sounds so possible! so why wouldn't the satellite be used for tracking $$$$ to keep merchandise moving? |

Govn't agencies already have stockpiles of food. They pay many farmers not to farm, because we have too much wheat, cheese etc.... or whatnot. I seriously dont think Wal mart is tracking citizens so they can raid our food supplies. They track our purchases so they can stock their stores with items the locals want. They're just doing good marketing, not spying on individuals.
