I just recently bought a Lodge Logic cast iron skillet and have enjoyed using it. I think I am ready to buy a dutch oven but have no idea where to start. Lodge Logic makes about 15 different kinds. I read somewhere that it is best to have one with a 12" base--is that true? Also, do I need one with legs? What can I fix in one?
Thanks so much, Lisa |

Lisa, The reason to have one is that you can bake pies, cookies, cakes, biscuits or anything else you can make in a conventional oven in a Dutch oven. Try that in your fry pan! The Boy scouts use them which speaks of their ease of use and versatility. They are also good if you are considering the possibility of bugging out. A couple of ovens and some brickets will make a good low visibility cooking system that is small enough to pack in the BOV (bug out vehicle.) The invert lid set on the legs of an inverted pan can be used as a fry pan to cook eggs and bacon or pancakes. Which type depends on what you want to do with it. I have five ovens all of them with legs. The one with legs is used for outdoor fire type cooking. The legs keep the pot off the coals which can be brickets or firewood. It is easier to control temperature with brickets than with firewood but if your BF preps include firewood you may want to get a couple of these ovens. I keep brickets because it is so easy to cook with them. But I know I can find firewood if I run out of brickets. The size depends on how many people you intend to cook for. There are just two of us and we use the 10" the most but I cook meatloaf in an 8" one. I also have a couple of 12" ones in case I have some friends over. There is actually a great deal of info on the web about Dutch oven cooking. You can get a lot of receipes off the web. All my ovens are Lodge brand and I have no complaints. The "Lodge Logic" are preseasoned units and cost about 5 bucks more. They are easy to season but if you're in a hurry buy the preseasoned one as it will take a few hours to season a new oven. If you live in a rural area you may be able to pick up a couple at a garage sale. If I can answer any more questions don't hesitate to ask!
