About 2,000 birds to be culled in Garut

GARUT, West Java (Antara): About 2,000 birds of various types to be culled in Cikelet district in Garut regency, West Java province after a number of birds were found infected by bird flu at several villages, an official said Saturday.

"Currently we are identifying all poultry to be culled in one-kilometer radius from where we found the infected birds," head of Garut Animal Husbandry Agency, Andi Rachmat, told Antara news agency.

The infected birds were found in Cigadog and Cijambe villages.

Earlier this month, more than 3,500 poultry of chickens, ducks, and birds were culled in Cikelet and Cigadog villages.

"We will also vaccinate up to 70,000 birds. So far we have vaccinated some 230,000 birds," said Andi.

Cases of infected birds were also found in Leles and Bayongbong districts although the results have yet to be announced pending laboratory tests.

Out of 18 suspected bird flu cases among humans in Garut regency, only three declared positive with two fatalities. The third patient, Umar bin Aup, was cured.
