Absolutely nothing to do with BF, but I know we have some regular members from Australia here.  What was the reaction to the tragic death of Steve Irwin Down Under?  Up here, the verdict seems to be split between "Cool Guy" and "Shameless Self-promoter".

Samoa - I know you're looking for the 'down under' members, but I have to say, I loved this guy!! We used to watch him faithfully everyday and we loved him as much as our kids loved him, Steve's is missed already.

Samoa , I live on the Sunshine Coast Queensland , about 20 mins from Beerwah where Aussie Zoo is . Steve grew up here , he was as passionate about surfing as he was about animals . What you saw was who he was 24 / 7 . Here on the coast parents cry as they tell their kids before they see it on TV . The whole country is in shock , we all loved Steve , he just did things most people would talk about doing .......... he got things done .
If you listen to his Dad speak soon you will hear his voice , Steve's dad was his hero . We had family passes , lets us in all year round to Aussie Zoo and always saw Steve and his lovely wife there , you know they always waved and said HI . He just wanted to share his life , his love , and his concern with the world to help animals of our world .
They want to give him a state funeral , Australia is waiting for the family to tell want they want . We as a Nation are in mourning ........
there was only one Steve Irwin  .................

Anyone who loves animals and wishes to preserve what little natural habitat they have left has lost a champion.  He did what we all wish we could do, my heart goes out to his family, we have all lost a hero.

His zest for life and dedication to what he loved were an inspiration to many people.  He lived more in a year than most do in a lifetime.

Weren't they filming a documentary when he died? Do you think that they will air the footage, sell it, or market it someway or another?

I hope not , there is no justification for airing it,.  I just saw an interview where his father has turned down a state funeral for Steve, it was so sad.

My family enjoyed this show and liked steve irwin, but I used it as an example for my son of 'what not to do around animals'.  We always talked about how one day this guy would meet his end due to these exploits, and it has happened. It was not too much of a stretch to imagine it.  It has been a good lesson to him in risky behaviors, i.e. weighing the risk to your own life versus pursuing a goal.

This reminds me of the documentary "Grizzly Man" - exactly the same scenario.

I liked this guy, but am surprised that people are making a hero of him.  A state funeral?  Really?  For a guy who had a TV show and funded a zoo with the proceeds??

I feel sorry for the wife and kids left behind and hope they do not choose to pursue his same 'career' as has been suggested.

That is what makes a hero. Doing things others are afraid to do.

IMO.......

What happened to him was just a freak accident.  He knew enough to not provoke that stingray.

Chloe - you're right - as we all know stingrays are very peaceful creatures and it was just a freak accident - more people are hit by lightening! We have lost a true conservationist - Samoa - I don't know where you got the "split" idea. Everyone I've heard from so far thought he was a great person not a "shameless self promoter!"

I grew up on the coast of NC and when I would fish on the pier I saved a few stingrays from death.  They might be poisonous "down under" but here they just have sharp barbs that can cut you really bad.  I can remember running down the pier to step on more than one slashing tail of a stingray that a fisherman had reeled up to keep the person that caught it from cutting its tail off (they are completely defenseless without their tails and the common practice on the pier was to cut their tails off unhook them and kick them back into the ocean).

I scuba quite often and see rays all the time. They just swim past you and seem like they're dancing to a rythm. I have never seen them be aggressive. What a way for him to go!! So many more dangerous animals he tangled with.

I too met Steve on a holiday to aussie zoo ( I live on the other side of Australia) and he was an awesome bloke, very genuine.  He did a lot that people dont know about he wasnt rich, his flims and docos made so much money and every cent he sunk back into conservation of animals he relaly put his money where his mouth was, he brought large parcels of habitat just so they could remaim bush and the animals wouldnt be pushed out.  He funded so many conservation projects, he died while filiming a piece for his daughters new tv series out next year.  We all loved him and will miss him dearly the world has lost a true WILDLIFE WARRIOR!

We loved Steve.  My husband and I are both really sad about it, haven't told our kids and probably won't, just going to let it go and let him live on to them in shows and reruns.  We have  a deep respect for him, his wife, his parents and anyone else in that field that is trying to save the world from the most aggressive, deadly and destructive animal on it - man.

The world has lost a powerful spokesman for wildlife....such a shame..:(
So many families in our community have expressed great shock and saddness.

My children just LOVE this guy..and we all are so saddened by his passing.   We were at a local playground the other day...and it was the topic of discussion with several moms.  Steve's untimely death has caused grief for many a family here in the U.S....and I am sure abroad, as well.

I don't know if folks who don't have young children realize that this guy was IDOLIZED.  To my sons...he was a hero.  Brave and compassionate.  As a mother...I certainly appreciated his pride and devotion to his family.  My heart goes out to his wife and precious children.

My kiddos donate or "tithe" a bit o' money each month to one organization or another.  It's not a whole lot..but, they get to decide where it goes...and they "pool" it together...so, it does add up.  They have decided to sponsor one of Steve's "adopt a tiger" programs...in memorium.  My oldest daughter suggested it.  They all seem pretty excited about it.

I am sure we will see wonderful things from his wife and children in the future...they, too, are remarkable.  They will bring honor to his legacy..I feel certain.

Respectfully, JD

Greatly missed.  I loved his ethics, he was a real family man who celebrated his family ,  He loved his wife and children and that always a hero.  I like that she was a average looking women with a stronge spirit .  Not a model actress.

He made loving a normal life and appreciating what God gave you a a blessing.   .  .

He strived to  acheve goals that are available to every man and celebrate everyday life.   Love nature and your family.

Hundreds of people gather for the traditional surfers' farewell off Alexandra Headland.

Surf tribute to Crocodile Hunter

11.09.2006
by AMY REMEIKIS

STEVE Irwin was farewelled by close to 300 surfers yesterday, as they joined hands and formed a giant floating circle in tribute to a fellow wave rider and mate.

The ocean was calm and the weather clear as close friends and complete strangers of all ages paddled out off Alexandra Headland just before 9am.

Some were grasping flowers, others were lending support to the Australia Zoo staff who formed a second group in the middle of the giant circle – all thinking of the man who had touched their lives.

Hundreds more lined the beach, standing in silence to pay respect to a local hero.

It was a fitting tribute to a man who could be found at his favourite beach break every chance he got – who loved surfing and the ocean as much as he loved the creatures in it.While some of his fans used the flotilla to say goodbye, it’s believed Steve’s family laid their husband, dad and son to rest in a private ceremony some time over the weekend.

Unconfirmed media reports speculated that Steve was buried on the grounds of his zoo yesterday but his manager John Stainton would not comment, saying only that “it was a matter for the family and I’m not family so I can’t say anything”.

“We just sort of had a quiet weekend to try and get our thoughts back together and have some time,” he said.

But he told the Daily he believed Steve’s father Bob would hold a press conference today

It is believed that is when the family will also release details on the public memorial service which is being planned.

Across the Coast, Steve’s friends and fans said their own goodbyes yesterday, with many who took part in the flotilla saying it was time to “stop grieving and start celebrating his life and what he stood for”.

“It was quite uplifting if anything, more of a celebration of him, than a loss,” said Noel Woods.

“I think the whole Coast has grieved as one this week. We’ve all reflected on his trials and tribulations but now it’s time to celebrate who he was and what he stood for. In my mind he will be forever young”. Just wanted to share with you how a lot of us said goodbye on the weekend there were hundreds linning the beach and hundreds of flowers drifting in the swell , the staff from Aussie Zoo were in the middle of the circle and the Caloundra footy team Steve played with and old school buddies were there . The children were in awe of the day , all left with a smile on their little faces all chanting crocs rule , some kids were quoted saying Steve was always happy so now we will be happy for him . His family had a quite service at the Zoo . Cheers from Candles . article from our local newspaper sunshinecoastdaily.com.au

My husband and I loved watching his shows and were shocked to hear the news.  He was so full of life.

I did believe for some time that it was only a matter of time before something killed him because of his dealings with poisonous snakes, crocodiles, and such.  I feel bad for his wife and children.

It's so strange that with all dangerous animals he worked with, the one that got him was a gentle, normally non-lethal one. So freakish that it got him in his heart. If it'd hit somewhere else he would almost certainly still be alive today. I feel so badly for his children. I saw some interviews he did with his family and he seemed like such an awesome dad.

I, too, mourn the passing of Steve Irwin. Your surfer tribute was very moving. If I could, I would be at the stadium for the public memorial. Sending prayers to Terri, Bindi, Bob, Big Bob and Wes. Wish I could do more. Steve Irwin lived his heart.
