This is third hand from another forum, but it appears to be cut and pasted directly from that location:
Be careful who knows what you have. Not to seem paranoid, but the Powers That Be have many eyes and ears - perhaps that helpful clerk at the bulk purchase store, perhaps a nosy neighbor, perhaps that appliance repair person you had in your kitchen or basement, perhaps your well-meaning but addle-headed Uncle Fred. edited to contain these additional comments: "This post is from the AR15.com survival forum. This particular CERT session went that way because of the folks running it in some town in CO. Many, many other CERT involved individuals have posted about their own contrary experiences in CERT. This outlook is not habitual with CERT training. That said, it's real obvious that any local, state or Fed gov will confiscate whatever they want if the situation is bad enough. It happened last August in New Orleans. It's written into an executive order on the federal level. City and county governments are spending their budgets on what they want to spend it on, rather than on supplies for emergencies. Some of them are planning, behind closed doors, to take what they need when they need it instead of being fiscally frugal and disciplined now. " Edited by bruss01 |

I am receiving request from people to "delete their records" of their
orders, which I'm quite happy to do if asked. I also keep everything
encrypted, should my computer be compromised.
There is a lot you can do if you are concerned about privacy and the general knowledge regarding preparations. However, simply cooking in a starving neighborhood may give you away. There are a few things that can help in this area, for example, boiling hot water and eating freeze dried food, there is almost no smell except nearby. Other techniques - thermos cooking. Eating foods dry. It's terrible that people even have to think like this, but may soon become a fact of life. |

Keep your preps quite. Do not talk about it your inventory to people you cannot trust. Bruss, I read that thread @ AR15.com, really interesting. I am also a team member there. Lot of good info in the Survival forum also. |

Shhhhhhh.....it's no one's business what you have no matter the emergency! Seperate your rations all over the house so that if they find one stash you still have many others. I just thougt of hiding rations in our upright piano, attic, rubbermaid containers labeled "christmas ornaments" or "keepsakes" or "family photos".

Im going to start a "looters pile" with all of the food that expires
and goes bad! That way, if someone comes looking for preps...I'll
lovingly hand over a box full of stale and old food!!! The massive
stomache ache that comes from eating a can of old beans would be a
special gift from me to them! Plus, I doubt they would come back to my
house looking for seconds!

My stuff is in one small room in the house, and hidden in lidded buckets in my barn, stacks of sheetrock mud buckets to be exact. They covered with DIRTY dusty tarps, feed sacks and the like.
20 bales of hay stacked to make a hidden hole work well. Or make a false floor and cover it with hay. I allow NO ONE out of my home, or the young kids, to see these things. Keep my mouth SHUT except here on this forum. |

just a suggestion: i have a surveilance system on my property that cost us $500.00 a couple of years ago and it works incredibly well. it is an infra-red system - remote access.. there are 3 laser beam electronic eyes pointed at different locations on our property and when the beam is broken - day or night, an alarm goes off in the house. each eye has a different tone for the alarm so you know exactly where the person was on your property when they set off the alarm. i am sure it would be cheaper to purchase the system through the company that manufactures it. we purchased it from someone who installed alarms. if any of you are interested in more information please either post on this board or feel free to e-mail me privately. i had also purchased "driveway alerts", but in my opinion, the other system i have is almost flawless.

OK! What do you do if the guy who has delivered all your supplies from UPS is the same guy? He has already asked questions, and my hubby said that they were to help people who were having some hard times...It dosent take an idiot to connect the dots here whe SHTF! Meewee

Meewee - Well, closing the barn door after the horse is loose can be tough. At least your hubby had a "cover story", believable or not. Odds are, the UPS guy won't really remember that much unless you live in a small town or deliveries are rare. Maybe get some of your mail order stuff thru other channels occasionally, Fed Ex or USPS just to cut down on the volume thru a single channel. Maybe have some of it delivered where you work, or where hubby works, or to a friend or neighbor, saying it's a surprise for your boss's birthday party, you won't be home when it's delivered, don't want it stolen, etc. Mail Boxes ETC is a possibility, or a Post Office Box (very economical). On the subject, here are some preparedness minded people who have explored the topic of cover stories in some detail. Some of these sound pretty convincing. My wife and I have used some of them when making unusual purchases. |

Ella - I love your suggestion! My wife thought that was deliciously devious. Wonderful! Same to you, Tnbebo - nice camoflage! That sounds very similar to what the Resistance in occupied countries durring WW2 did, lots of supplies crucial to the resistance hidden in plain sight on farms. Swankyc - Love the poster, is that from WW2? (bit of a WW2 enthusiast myself). Great message. My wife says we need that one on the back of our front door, an ever-present reminder. Tired, maybe a good strategy. Thugs ususally take a hike when they think they got what they came for. Only problem is if they come back. Canned food is usually dated 2 years out, but can be good for 5 or more if stored in a consistently cool dry environment, like a basement. If it looks ok, and smells ok - try a bit... if it tastes ok, it probably IS ok. If it tastes, smells or looks spoiled, don't chance it. Otherwise, the risk is very slight if the goods have been properly stored. In times of plenty, expired foodstufs go in the trash, in lean times, we can't necessarily afford to be so "choosy". Of course missing a meal or two beats getting sick, but missing 100 meals that were technically expired but still perfectly ok when there was nothing else to eat... well, that's a choice we all have to make at the time, I guess.

Wow! I am beyond stunned. Not to mention crazed and furious. It has taken so much effort, energy and sacrifice to get to the point where I finally feel like I have a fighting chance to help my friends and family against this enormous impending black cloud coming our way and then pow, even before the sh*t hits the fan I have to fear the mailman, the UPS guy, and the local law banging down my front door. Not to mention they will be armed to the teeth with my name on a list, big guns and eminent domain on their side. My head is spinning. Up until a few months ago I was trying to be a good citizen and convince people to get prepared and be empowered and now I feel my efforts have put me and mine at serious risk of being a target to the very ones who are supposed to protect me. I am very grateful for this information so I can work on plan B, not to mention C and D! I have defiinitely been too naive and not paranoid enough. Thank you for the reality check!

Here is an article with some thoughts on "being discreet". Recommendation: This is food for thought, backed up by some disturbing facts. For the sensitive, please read this only when you feel emotionally "strong" enough to handle upsetting material. This info has been around a long time, but amazingly, not a lot of people realize that these things are not only possible, but 100% legal. Don't read this right before bedtime - you have been warned. |

Bruss, I am 1/4 Indian, hide in plain sight was taught to me many years ago. And hauling shine was a way of life in my family, so I have some tricks up my sleeves.
If things get out of hand, sprinkle some ground RED pepper around your hiding place, and well away from it also, tears a dogs nose to pieces. And confuses him to no end. |

You dont need to be a fortune teller to know that is how people are going to react. We are geared to organize and become a group so survialist could be seen as the enemy. I have not told my neighbour that I am storing food, i am trying to think of ways to cook food with out the smell of food coming from the house. I may need to survive on can food. Some one posted article on survival foods If I need I will appear to know how to live off the land . Pine needle tea, rassberry tea leaf, rabbit stew as a reason to explain why i dont join them. some books on gathering food left in plan sight, pamplets are free A lot planning will be thinking on your feet. Sharing ides now will help develop plans when the time comes. There are many ways to hide food

Keep lots of plastic trash bags around so you can stockpile your garbage at home, if needed. If we are lucky enough to have trash service working, putting your trash out on the curb is an invitation for folks to find out exactly what you have been eating. Some of it can be burned for fuel, but the rest will persist. My food stockpile is M.R.E's, and since these tend to be in high demand during emergencies, I have learned to be careful about conspicuous consumption, storage, moving them about, etc. |

I'm known around town for buying LOTS of one item at a time, so I can buy items on sale, to keep my grocery bill down. I usually shop at Walmart and bring in the flyers from EVERY local store and price match just about EVERY item. It can take me over 30 minutes to check out. I usually only have about 8 different items, but a full cart. I usually spend under $50.00. All people notice is that I'm holding up the line and pissing everyone off. Then the second shock comes when the items are totalled and I have bought so much stuff for so little money. When everyone is complaining and flipping out, and a few people are watching with interest, because they are thinking of trying it, I keep emphasizing I only spend $50.00 a week on food. I live in a wealthy area and am the only one that price matches groceries at this store. I'm seen as a POOR person who is scamming Walmart, but if that's what keeps my family fed...then good for me :-) At least that's what I think people are thinking :-0 Very few people know how much food I've stocked up. The fact that I'm buying flour, sugar, oil by the jug, etc lines up with being poor. "I can't afford cake mixes". "Steak...are you kidding...My crew doesn't even get hamburgers very often. All they get is a little ground beef added to a casserole!" "3/$100 boxed pasta is SUCH a treat for me. Usually I have to make all my pasta and roll it out and cut it up by hand." I'm a bit worried about the few people who do know what I have :-0 I never worried about hiding before Katrina! I wasn't stockpiling until recently. I just had more food than the usual person because I'm "poor". Now that I'm SERIOUSLY stockpiling right now, I'm going to hide what is more than I used to have. I'm NOT spending just $50.00 anymore and being EXTRA careful to buy what gives me the most buying power. I'm actually creating quite a stash on much less than most people spend to just eat for a week. I'm stockpiling for people who have more money than me, because I love them...but...I want to be in control of what I give out and to who! This is quite the sacrifice to me...and I often give away vast amounts of my pantry...even to people who foolishly wasted their money. People won't assume I have that much food though, as I'm "poor" and a "poor" person could never aquire enough to fight over :-0 Yeah...I have a few extra can of tuna to tide me over to the next tuna sale...but...not enough really think about :-) Yup...I've got a pantry in full view...but I'm starting a SECOND pantry that no one knows about! Someone close to me, recently made a comment about coming to live with me if the SHTF, to another person who agreed they were coming too :-( It kind of woke me up :-( These people have a lot more money than I do, but waste it :-( Kat

I know this sounds a bit silly...but I have ziplocked all of my preps and stored in plastic totes..I have been doing this for awhile so mine was done step by step..like for example I bought 20 boxs candy canes today(at 5 cents a box) and have ziplocked 18 in each bag..all of the plastic and cardboard will go out with this weeks trash... Now once TSHTF..I have couple of alternatives, but think about this one..I have a half finished basement and the panel would come down in a mega second..I have thought ahead a purchased wire..and would store as much as i can on the 2x4 studding and replace the panneling... If it is summer or spring i have purchashed spades to dig holes in the ground..I have sealable buckets for this..and I have a canoe and could even go far into the woods to do this.. There alot of places to hide that what which we have worked so hard to get...look around your place and see where you could hide stuff... HOW about under the couch and living room chair the space above underneath...don,t put squishy stuff in there...in the box spring of your,s and kids beds...buy some little plywood and you nail to the frame..it sounds like alot of work, but would be well worth it to keep some of those precious stocks... I have considered my attic, but the heat up there in the summer would just destroy everything... how about under your shed outside,if you have space underneath it...you can even open the plate of your computer tower and fit a bit in there...behind your stove,in your dryer(lol) don,t turn it on.. some of these are only if they are coming to your door..silly places they would think not to look..even against looters... look for all the hollow hidden places you can find.. |

well, they can't have mine .. as a human being your self preservation comes above all. what people don't suspect is the simple fact that I am exceptionally well armed and won't go down with out one hell of a fight. Most of those idiots know me by reputation and don't want to face a well armed gun nut like myself. Shotguns, rifles and other fun things will go flying there way. In any case, they won't live to see the day that they will get there stuff. as far as the dumb neighbors are concerned... they won't be breaking into the house anyway. we are just too well armed and my reputation is siuch that most want to stay away from me.

When things get bad the country will go to marshal law. The military will take over it is a given . I do resent that I grew up in never taking charity and earning your own way in the world and the work ethic was the only thing worth beleiving in (and GOD) So it bugs me to have people stealing my stuff and beleiving that I owe them. In the end I will take care to preserve my right to protect my family I will hide my food and and med I tell no one about my food stash,Someone described it like what happened in the second war and hidding people hidding provisions, hidding ourselves. We need to share ways to hide food,
When Garbage will be a issue I will burn paper wrappers flatten clean rinsed tin cans and hide them in the walls plastic wrap will be hidden . I will give off the appearance of someone living off the land garbAGE will be leftover pine needles rose hips and and well place pamplets on living off the land in other words the appearance of nothing to steal and owning nothing you cant get for free anywhere. I bet all the prep theives will be reading these forums to get all the
ideas about where the preps are hidden and how people are splitting
preps into smaller piles, I reckon when TSHTF they will be armed and
simply break down your door grab a weak family member and place them
under gun point till you reveal where all the preps are hidden, load up
their SUV and if your lucky leave your daughters with you!
It will be easy to spot the prepers when the TSHTF because every one else will be running around like headless chickens trying to get whatever they can where as the preppers will be quiet and calm. The most advance prepper posts I have read include a fall back plan to steal other peoples preps if it goes on and on. |

Hmmm... I'm not worried about protecting long term provisions, or someone taking a family member at gun point. I'm just worried about a goverment official casually marching in and taking what is fairly obvious. Or people I know only fairly casually, PLANNING on using what I've left out in plain site, thinking they don't need to worry because they think I will take care of them. If things get REAL bad,I'm not prepared for that :-0 I'm just trying in GENERAL to be able to be more self sufficient in the type of minor to moderate emergencies that are LIKELY to happen. Katrina wasn't REALLY bad!! THe problem was that people were not prepared for ANY type of emergency whatsoever and had NOTHING to fall back on :-( And in Katrina, goverment officials were not holding family members hostage :-) If we get to that stage...well...I'm not so sure I want to stick around :-0 I'm just not preparing for those type of scenarios! I CERTAINLY don't have enough stockpiled that it would be worth it to take a family member hostage :-0 In a few months I will have enough though, that if I leave it ALL out in plain sight, it will lead to people forming ideas that I'd rather they didn't :-0 Yeah, Kat will have enough food to feed the entire neighborhood for a week. Maybe Kat will even do that. It needs to be MY choice though, and storing at least 1/2 of it in a hidden pantry will just...be a better idea. |

If you liver in the country, dig out a hiding place, where????????
UNDER A SMALL CHICKEN COOP, kill a few of them and leave them laying out, this will WORK. I remember seeing HUGE stills under chicken houses to cover the smell of the slop. |

I think we might be overestimating our country's ability to impose martial law and actually enforce it somehow. Think about the case of police officers in New Orleans. They just didn't show up for work. They were busy protecting themselves and their families. In a severe pandemic, I don't think hospital workers will show up for work, nor police officers, and I'm not picturing troops out patrolling on my street. If I do see one, I will surely invite him in for lunch, or some hot coffee perhaps. I will probably be the LACK of martial law that poses the greates threat. Providing for one's own security could be a full-time hobby, and I'm hoping to do some coordinating with some of my close neighbors. Perhaps I will be able to get some sleep at night, or during the day for that matter. At any rate, I am siding with KOMET163 on home security. It proabably isn't going to be a problem that my neighbors know I have food, since they know what else I have, too. |

I read alot of WWII history as well. I also liked W.E.B. Griffin's book, the Army series, but liked the Marine CORPS series better - about the war in the Pacific (fiction and fact mixed) good books.

To me the first thing to understand about prepping is that we are not just a minority we our less than .05 of the popul;ation so yes people can read these boards and find out ways we are hiding preps but athey would have to rob 1000 houses on average til they found us, most people are going to have at best a couple of weeks of food after the power goes out. Discretion will be your in your favour the odds are people will beleive you are just as hard up as they are

First of all, to those concerned, I don't think people reading these boards know exactly where you live. Secondly, people on these boards live all over the world! That's alot of traveling to do if you're going on foot carrying shotguns! And come to think of it, if the U.S. gov. is in need of supplies I think they would just take over a Costco, Walmart or any supermarket supply warehouse instead of hunting me down to get what's left from my basement supply of spaghettios and poptarts. I have shown my small "general store" of supplies to a select few to try and encourage them to practice preparedness ( to no avail of course) and when they say "not interested, I'll just come to your house" I say "Be my guest, I'll be long gone before you even get into your car." Prepare Relentlessly :>} |

Komet I wouldn't bet on it. Desperate people will do desperate things. Your "A" plan may be sound, and I have no reason to believe you can't defend yourself or that you have shown your full hand. Your plan would be improved if you added a "B" or even a "C" to it...you never know you might have to face an ex-military platoon marauding its way through town.
