I have 7 cats - all of them were rescue, and all of them were unable to be placed out (I've done rescue for a few years; latest total for rehoming is about 50). The 7 I have are all unable to be placed out for various reasons (some medical, some behavioral, one because I just can't give him up...)..
In any event...I have lots of extra bagged food for them, and a lot of litter. My garage has about 50 20# bags of litter, stored appropriately (up off the floor). As I was making a run to my local pet store (I get a discount there because of the rescue I do) I discovered some very large, airtight containers for sale. I got 4 of them, and I am loving them. They stack, so take up little room. I have a smaller one for the house, but the 4 are stacked in the garage - and are filled with kibble. Because they're airtight, I can keep cupboards free for other things, and because they stack, they're really space efficient. They're really heavy when full, but I can't beat them for storage.
I just thought I'd throw out that suggestion for all of us pet owners...I've seen these at lots of different places, just make sure it's airtight, and you should be good to go. We've got to make sure they have food, too...and this is a great way to do that and keep it fresh.
Best to all-

Someone else had suggested using the galvanized steel trash cans for food storage, they seem like they would hold alot. I have not purchased my pet food yet, I purchase some, then I end up using it. I really need to get on the ball with this, we have 9 cats and 2 dogs, and I feed strays cats that come around.
