Disclaimer - I am not affiliated with these folks...

I just spotted an interesting item in a catalog from www.sahalie.com - it is a small, 8 pound "Cobb Cooking System". It claims that it is so efficient that you cook an entire meal with 6 charcoal briquettes and can grill, roast, bake, barbecue, smoke or simmer with it. If you don't want to deal with propane this could possibly be an alternative.
