I really want to better protect my home and my family in the case of a natural disaster or attack. Looking back on disasters like Hurricane Katrina, I know people started to loot homes and steal from stores. I have a gun that I keep tucked away, but it’s been a while since I’ve brushed up on my skills. I live in the San Diego area, and am looking for shooting ranges, places to go, and classes to take that can help when it comes to protecting your home. I’ve considered taking a self defense class, or other classes offered in my area. Any advice on where to start? What are some good places to go?

Wow San Diego! That's tough. I was out at North Island a couple times and was amazed at how nice the weather was there.
Your first problem is the overcrowding in that area. There's really no getting around that. I'd advise that you move somewhere a little out of town, but that may or may not be a possibility considering the size of that metro area, job location, fuel availability, etc.
Second, and I believe that this is the single most important measure you can take in regards to survivability, is GET IN SHAPE! A great way to do this is start a martial art. Most Karate etc is fine, it'll get you in shape and you'll be somewhat prepared for a scrap. If you really want to get in shape and learn a martial skill that will most definately help you in a fight, go take Krav Maga. It's an Israeli fighting training regimen that is simply about neutralizing a threat. You would be challenged from the beginning, but the skills you'd receive would be invaluable if you actually got into a fight. This is the training that I take with a smattering of MMA. There isn't all the hubbub of arts and whatnot, it's about fighting and ending an attacker's actions, period, and it works.
But most importantly is the need for you to get in shape regardless of how old or disabled you are. Fat people are only able to live amongst us because the conveince of modern lifestyles allow them to. This isn't anything against overweight people either, it's a fact. In a bad situation the out of shape guy/girl is far more likely to succomb to not only hardship, but illness than the guy/girl that kept themselves in good shape. I'm in pretty good shape, I'm 6'1" 195 to 200 can run two miles in sixteen minutes without stopping, 72 pushups in a minute, sixty three situps in a minute, and can bench 210 lbs. Who's going to survive hardship? Me or the guy that is forty puonds overweight, eats McDonalds every night, and sits on the couch eight hours a day after his desk job?
As far as shooting, Kalifornistan is a difficult place to do so. Providing you've adhered to all the laws and rules regarding guns there, I'm sure there are shooting ranges that can teach you safe and proper handling of your weapon. Defensive shooting is also a martial skill can be taught by a myriad of teachers. A Google search pulled up not only the link you provided, but several others as well. My advise is to go to that school in your link and give them a try.
I don't know what your financial situation is, nor do I know how experienced at firearms you are, but I would at the very least take the Defensive Handgun course. You'll probably learn quite a lot. Hopefully they'd teach you simple weapon retention, defensive shooting fundamentals, including shoot/no shoot situations, marksmanship, and proper use of force.
Defensive Shotgun, and the Cali CCW along with the Multi state CCW courses could be taken as well, with an emphasis on Shotgun. Most people have absolutely no idea the utility and limitations of a shotgun. Many believe that you just get the muzzle in the general direction of your target and pull the trigger to get hits. That is 100% incorrect. The other two shooting courses would refine your knowledge and give you some experience in laws both in your home state and abroad.
How's that?

Asking advice about self defense classes is a hard one. To practice a martial art properly usually involves commiting to that particular style above all others, and that often makes it hard to find unbiased advice on which style would be a good fit for you. I'd use the internet and the yellow pages to find schools close to you that offer classes that fit your schedule and pocket. Sit in on classes, do some research online and be sure it's for you before you pay membership fees, and buy equipment and uniforms. Trial memberships are great if they're offered so you can see first hand what you're getting into.
Krav Maga is an extremely effective "external" style that demands a lot of physical conditioning (not a bad thing), while other softer styles, such as the Chinese "internal" arts delve more deeply into the philosphy as well as the self defense application. You have a lot of choices, and with a little research you'll find one you like. I started off as a kid with Ju Jitsu, but gravitated toward Chinese styles like Hung Gar, Choy Li Fut, Ba Gua Chang and Hsing I. Good luck |

Thanks for your advice everyone, its been really helpful. Looks like I've got a lot of work to do! I think I will end up trying out the disaster preparation class I mentioned earlier. Does anyone else have experience with classes like these?

I think this situation in Haiti is and will be instructive to us about how people react in a crisis. From what I see in the media, civility is near collapse among the people of Haiti that live in areas that are getting no relief. It has already turned violent. There are reports of roving gangs that are going from neighborhood to neighborhood, taking what little food anyone has as if it were their own. I am making my preparations accordingly. We live 200 miles southeast of the New Madrid fault. What happened in Haiti could happen here in Arkansas, could happen very easily. This is a good time for people to be wise and (quietly) proactive.

Oh man. New Madrid.
I used to live a mile or so from Lake of the Ozarks. When I was doing some research on what's around there I stumbled upon the New Madrid fault line. If that sucker went off now with what it hit with back in the 1800's, it'd be like setting off a nuclear weapon on Nashville, St Louis, K.C. and the rest of the area! When it went off last time it rang church bells as far away as Boston!
It's been said that if it was as powerful today as then, I'd actually feel a five to six magnitude earthquake in Minneapolis! Chances are a magnitude four would crush much of our housing, and a five would be a total disaster! If that happened, the center of our country, also known as what pretty much feeds the world, would be instantly turned into a Mad Max scenario!
Edit: Also, since it's a fault that's in the middle of a plate, they felt major aftershocks for MONTHS!!! The first hit was a magnitude 8, and the first aftershock was a 6.9 to 7! hey were getting five and sixth magnitude earthquakes two months later! That's a level of destruction mankind has simply never witnessed in modern times!
