What I have decided to do from now on, because bird flu is so much more of threat;

I am going to save all my old tubes of toothpaste(I have kids in the house and they are forever leaving the cap of) there is always enough left in the tube for a couple of brushes..I have about 24 tubes stocked, but would use these first..would cut the tube opened..I will leave a small box under my cupboard for these

Going to save all my little peices of hand soap(have a few saved up now)

And i am a smoker(althou when flu hits will probably stop) but I am taking the tiny butts from my ash tray and squeezing out bits of tobacco that are left and I freeze it..and I will buy some rolling papers..I figure when things cool down I could barter with this..I have prepped my own stash of tobacco..nots lots but enough to do for a bit..

I am also going to stop throwing out a lot of those left overs...I have not had suffient funds to prep for the pets, so I will take left overs and freeze them and make up almost like a gruel for them...

Does anyone else have any recycle re-use...crazy freaky things to add...cheap idea,s are sometimes the best

I used the idea that someone posted about saving my lint from the dryer, stuffing into sections of a cardboard egg carton - pouring candle wax and using as firestarters.

For the kids:

The newspaper sells their end rolls of printing paper very, very cheap - $2.00 at all my local newspaper companies.  There is a ton of paper on these rolls.  Just roll it out on the kitchen floor and they can draw.. . I bought extra rolls because I figure if we're in the house for a while I'll need lots of paper for drawing and painting.

Laundry

I'm stocking up on Zote Soap (sold at most dollar stores for $1.00 a bar) I use this with a combination of washing soda and borax and water and can almost fill a 5 gallon bucket of laundry soap for under $2.00.

Bills

I'm paying a little extra each month on my phone and utility bills so in a few months time I'll have a "credit".  I'll continue to pay the regular bill, plus a little extra until I have a nice credit built up so if the bird flu does happen and I don't have income to pay my monthly bills, the credit will take care of it.

Groceries

I live in a small town, only a Wal-Mart supercenter.  The big stores like Meijers and Kroger are about 25 -40 minutes away.  Wal-Mart will match their competitors prices so each week I look on the computer and print out Kroger, Meigers and Save-a-lot's weekly ad, see what's on sale and head to my Wal-Mart with my flyers to buy it all at Wal-Mart for the sales price.  Wal-Mart says they will beat their "local" compeitor's prices and even though these stores are 25-40 minutes away they have never turned me down.  Hint:  Find a young (teenager age) , they usually don't even want to see the flyer - just want you out of their line!! :)

I think I need to start cleaning and saving empty pop bottles.

I know what it's like to be without water. I was once homeless on an island that used mostly rain water for drinking water. No roof, no unsalted water :-0

Also the town I live in has a major problem with bacteria in the water. They have to keep POURING in chemicals and when I choke on the fumes from the tap, I usually just go out and buy several bottles of water, and when we drink those, I keep visiting my inlaws to refill them, as long as the water is bad.

We have water sources here and there in the area that we can use. Water isn't the problem. I realized that containers to HOLD it might be though. Again, as I said on the Ramen Noodle thread, we should put away a few CHEAP things for neighborhood children. Empty soda bottles should be added to tea candles and Ramen Noodles, as give away stuff to keep stocked up on.

I put away enough bottled water to supply MY needs in bottles to refil, but a few empty soda bottles is a good thing to have around!

Save your bacon grease to flavor your vegetables when there is no meat.    I use it to flavor my peas, butterbeans, greenbeans, turnips, etc.  I know that you can buy a ham base/bullion to flavor with but why throw away the bacon grease.  I know it is not that healthy to use but I only use about a teaspoon per pot of vegetables.

Purchase a thingy to go on your toothpaste tubes that squeezes out all the toothpaste.  I have one and I use it faithfully.

Save your grocery/shopping bags to use as small trash bags.

Start a large container in your freezer for left over vegetables.  When you have enough add a little meat and make a pot of vegetable soup.  A plastic gallon ice cream bucket with a lid is perfect to store vegetables in.

I LOVE those plastic icecream buckets. I have so many uses for them. They are good for storing cookies, bread, leftovers. They can be used as a cleaning bucket. We serve popcorn in them.

A Bissel non electric BROOM. The old push ( brush on both sides) into a container on the unit. I got the short straw and was helping out today doing the floor with the mega dollar vac and thought how much fun this would be if no power. The bissel is being bought this afternoon.

We've got a tree in back which is dropping nice big pinecones. I'm going to start saving them for firestarters. I'm also going to keep some of my cat-food cans for candleholders. Just bought some packages of emergency candles (10 for $1), drip some wax into the tin, voila.

Muskrat, if you're serious about quitting smoking, might I suggest you deal with it now? During a time of high stress such as the pandemic, your chances for success are not good. Besides, if you quit now, you'd also have at least some funds to prep for your pets.

Well the stress is already here..thank you for the thought thou...waiting for major surgery and well that would stress anyone out..I was hoping the surgery would be done last month, before TSHTF....but I have to consult with another specialist to see how they can proceed...So here I sit biting nails and puffin..maybe I will head to bar post the twiki room(I think it is called) and see if they will serve me up a few morning shots...

oh I save my tuna tins for the candle making idea..I have stocked up on alot of candle wicking and the wax I out into the tops of my 2 litres will be re-used to make extra candles...
