Hi, I just joined and I am posting away like crazy. I just read under another subject that someone was wondering how to protect themselves from and infected person with bird flu. I have a 1994 hardcopy of a non-fiction book 'The Hot Zone', by Richard Preston, which tells the true story of the pandemic of ebola-reston virus in monkeys imported from the Phillipines to Reston, Virginia. Reading it today under these circumstances was ultra-scary, frankly. However, the author explains repeatedly and concisely The United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) methods for protecting their personnel while they work directly with Level 4 "hot agents", such as Marburg virus and Ebola. Not that any of us could ever work in a negatively pressured space-suit; but I think it would be naive of us to think we will never ever take care of someone with bird flu. It might be inadvisable to go to a hospital with a loved one anyway. I have read that avian flu has a death rate of about 50% with the best medical treatment or without it. I would welcome comments on this.
