Flu-related death toll doubles in Wash. State By KOMO Staff Published: Jan 4, 2014 at 4:40 PM PST Last Updated: Jan 5, 2014 at 8:08 AM PST 35 comments SEATTLE - The flu season has made a strong comeback in just the first week of the New Year. The death toll has doubled, with six people in Washington State having died this flu season. State Health Department data, as of mid-December, showed three confirmed flu deaths in Washington in 2013. Two other deaths during the first week of January, along with one confirmed Saturday in Grant County has now caused the number to grow. The Centers for Disease Control says the dominant stain is H1N1, otherwise known as swine flu. Swine flu is more likely to hit young adults and children than people over 65. Doctors urge everyone over 6 months of age to get the vaccination, adding that the vaccination can reduce the chances of getting the virus by 50 to 70 percent. |
