More H7N9 cases reported in China

Chinese health officials reported two additional cases of avian influenza A(H7N9) infection and the death of a previously reported case, according to WHO.

To date, there has been no evidence of human-to-human transmission of the virus.

The newest cases include a 62-year-old man from Guangdong province who was exposed to live poultry. He became ill Dec. 11 and was admitted to the hospital Dec. 16. He is currently in critical condition. The second patient is a 38-year-old man from Guangdong province who became ill Dec. 9 and was hospitalized Dec. 18. He also is in critical condition.

Additionally, Chinese health officials reported the death of an 80-year-old man who became ill while hospitalized for a pre-existing medical condition. He died Dec. 26 in Hong Kong.

According to WHO, the Chinese government is taking several steps to prevent further transmission of the virus, including strengthening surveillance, conducting scientific studies of cases of infection and releasing information to the public about the risks associated with H7N9.

There could be a number of factors at play. We're getting deeper into the flu season so an uptick in cases is probably something we should expect to see. And considering China's longstanding experience with flu strains I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't a certain amount of apathy setting in, with people consequently dropping their guard. I doubt if any of the wet markets are being closed, and the law requiring unsold birds to be slaughtered rather than returned to the flock is probably not being enforced (if it ever was).
One thing I haven't seen discussed with so many Chinese living in close proximity to livestock, is the possibility of people reinfecting poultry with viruses better suited to humans. It's been documented in the evolution of viruses in the States (most recently H3N2v in pigs), and it has to be happening there given the conditions the animals are raised in.

I read somewhere today that Shanghai is closing all 117 wet markets in the city from the end of the month until April 30th. That will help in Shanghai (though I see a huge market in smuggled chickens) but they need to close them all.

Exactly right - the trade will undoubtedly go underground, and therefore unregulated. No way are the traders going to look at the big picture and stay home, and consumers will be looking for someone to sell them what they want - fresh killed poultry.

ok dudes,

you might be totally right, that a part of that will go underground... but that would happen in such case in germany, italy and the us also... it is human kind behaviour...

at least they do something pretty big as a measure, and it gives time to get over the fluseason, eventually also to get a proper vaccine in the start of the next season.....
