Visitors have been urged to stay away from a hospital that is trying to contain the spread of the winter vomiting bug norovirus.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board has asked members of the public not to attend University Hospital Llandough unless absolutely necessary for the next few weeks.

A number of patients across two wards are suffering from the bug, which spreads quickly from person to person and can make more acutely ill or vulnerable people extremely unwell.

The UHB's chief operating officer, Alice Casey, said while norovirus is extremely common in the community at this time of year, it can present problems when it spreads in hospitals.

She said: "Many people will have the norovirus bug at this time of year – we see it every year and, for most people, it will be unpleasant but not serious. But when norovirus spreads in hospitals, where patients are already unwell and are in close proximity to each other on wards, the effects can be more serious.

(CNN) -- A 10-day Royal Caribbean cruise ship will return two days early after an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness, the cruise line said Sunday.

According to Bernadette Burden, a spokeswoman with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 600 people on the ship have become ill. Passengers and crew members reported vomiting and diarrhea.

"New reports of illness have decreased day-over-day, and many guests are again up and about. Nevertheless, the disruptions caused by the early wave of illness means that we were unable to deliver the vacation our guests were expecting," the cruise line said in a statement.

"After consultation between our medical team and representatives of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, we think the right thing to do is to bring our guests home early, and use the extra time to sanitize the ship even more thoroughly," the company said.

comment: This usually signals some type of change in the bug and classically comes from Australia. Ironically, during previous flu season, Norovirus would often co-infect people with h1n1 and in some data, they can travel as a pair and even talk to each other biochemical one prompting the other to attack.

However this is in America and that is quite a number of cases. To be continued.
