Other than stocking up on the things you need for several months think about other ways to prep also:
Simplify your life. Get rid of excess. Excess monthly bills, debt, and expensive car payments. Pay down what you can. Put the rest away. Clean house of clutter, sell off what you don’t need or want to make room for what you need to have on hand. “Lighten your load”. Have a dental checkup. Stock an emergency dental repair kit. Can be found in the camping/backpacking sections of outdoors stores. Ask your dentist if there is anything else you should keep on hand. Have your eyes checked. Get an extra pair of glasses or a supply of contacts. Don’t forget saline solution. Get a checkup. Talk to you doctor about bird flu. Ask for prescriptions for pain, antibiotics and anything else that may be unavailable. Doctors will often put together an emergency prescription kit for adventure travelers that may be gone for weeks on a wilderness expedition and days away from medical help. Take a first aid course. Get Your Personal Affairs in Order (click for article) Very important to have everything updated and to know where everything is at. Have a contingency plan. Plan for staying home. Plan for leaving. Plan for the worse. Have your workshop in order. Make sure you can repair, maintain or build essential survival items. Have a stock of simple repair items such as screws, nuts and bolts, glues, clamps, etc. Scrap wood may come in handy! Avoiding Cabin Fever During a Bird Flu Pandemic (click for article) Being cooped up for several months with spouse and children will be a challenge onto itself. Cookbooks. You may need to get creative with the food you have stored. Having several good cookbooks on hand will help you make the best use of your food prep and keep your family from getting bored. Read through them before hand to make sure you have all the needed ingredients. You probably won’t have the chance to run out to the store to pick up the missing ingredient. Start testing some of your recipes now. Make sure you have needed cookware on hand. Extra bread pans, pots, measuring cups and preparation equipment. Consider countertop appliances such as a rice steamer (especially if you just bought 50lbs of rice) and convection oven. These can use less electricity and can cook your food quicker. Keep planning and prepping. |

TJ - this is probably the single most important BF prep post I have read in a couple of weeks. Excellent, EXCELLENT things to think about and better yet, act on. Well done! Just last night, I wanted to cook some rice and was in a hurry. I remembered that rice cooks faster in a pressure cooker - 5 minutes versus half an hour. I grabbed the instruction book (don't want to make a mistake, 1st timer here) and was all ready to go when I came to a screeching halt. The directions called for putting the rice in a metal bowl inside the pc. Uh, don't we have a metal bowl here somewhere... No? Oh.... glad this was a trial run! Next on the shopping list.... set of nesting stainless mixing bowls! |

Unless civil society is completely destroyed, I think you can expect those evil corporations to be looking for their money when it all settles down.
Toying with the idea that debts might not be enforceable is a pretty dangerous game anyway |
