Poultry News

17 February 2014

CHINA - Poultry markets in two Chinese cities have been closed as the bird flu death toll continues to mount.

A two week hiatus has been placed on Guangzhou markets, while Hangzhou has enforced a permanent ban in response to the year's H7N9 bird flu death toll rising to 32.

The ban relates to all birds - both for meat and pets.

The announcements were reported last week by Xinhuanet, a Chinese news agency which said China has now recorded 120 cases in 2014.

^Thanks, Coyote!  I'm hearing similar stories as well.

Of course, all of these birds have to go SOMEPLACE....where?  Swine food!  Many avian mortalities from Chinese farms, eggs etc. are fed raw to swine.  Feathers, bones, guts & all.

The entire country was designed to grow and amplify viruses.  Add modern-day transportation into the mix, and it is like a dry forest, waiting for a lit cigarette.

Be safe!

In China you have over 1 billion people....

(If I gave you $1 a second for 32 years you would have a $1 Billion)

Several billion pigs

and even more billion ducks and chickens et cetera.

The birds make the influenza virus and the pigs and people catch it.

The pandemic is imminent - the odds are in its favour.

Fewer and fewer cases yet they're shutting down another wet market? Something doesn't add up I'm afraid.

Sara P- I couldn’t agree more. Having spent a good deal of time in the Great Plains this quiet is eerily reminiscent of the calm before a big storm. You can see the storm clouds on the horizon and you know its coming but you’re never sure when it will hit. The Chinese are withholding information at a time when its crucially needed!

It's the Chinese authorities doing what they do best - rather than working with international health agencies to coordinate a global response to a potential pandemic, they're trying to save face and handle it in their own half-assed way. Again.
In a token gesture, they'll shut down a few markets just long enough to keep up appearances but not enough to impact the spread, deny that it's in domestic flocks under pressure from their agricultural ministry, and then do nothing to control the trade that will continue to flourish on the black market. And the net result will be the problem driven further under the radar than it is already, and yet another opportunity lost in learning about H7N9's behavior.
The steady increase in cases that we've seen in recent months appears to be stabilizing or even slowing, no bloggers are chiming in with news - and yet they're closing markets again. It all points to a pattern that we saw last year when China started to feel the heat and decided it was time to shut down the flow of information.

Vietnam has announced a ban on the movement of poultry across the border with China, and halted the sale of poultry in their own markets. Has it finally broken out of the PRC?
