Three more major quakes hit the Pacific Ring Of Fire in the last 24 hours bringing the total 8 in the last 7 days. It brings the total number of major quakes this month to 16 and all of them occurred along the Pacific Ring Of Fire with many of them occurring in the vicinity of active volcanoes. - A total of 74 major quakes (67 along the Pacific Ring Of Fire) have struck the planet so far this year, last year and 2017 at this point, only 44 major quakes had been reported by USGS. Interesting because White Island (an active volcano 48km off the coast of the North Island in New Zealand) sprung to life yesterday and scientists are anticipating an eruption.
|
|
Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

FluMom, the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cascadia_subduction_zone may be "more interesting" to keep an eye on. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cascadia_subduction_zone#Megathrust_earthquakes. Although the seismic and volcanic systems "mix". One more active=other more active. (By the way Yellowstone is not the only https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supervolcano-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supervolcano#/media/File:Supervolcano_World_Map.png there are several known super volcanoes and most likely also some yet unknown.)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supervolcano#VEI_8 KiwiMum-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taupo_Volcanic_Zone is on the North Island of NZ. White Island is part of it. (The Taupo Volcanic Zone is approximately 350 kilometres (217 mi) long by 50 kilometres (31 mi) wide. Mount Ruapehu marks its southwestern end, while the submarine Whakatane volcano (85 kilometres (53 mi) beyond White Island) is considered its northeastern limit.[4] DJ-wikipedia) Chances of a super eruption are small-a M9+ earthquake is (much) more likely. (The Oruanui eruption of New Zealand's Taupo Volcano (about 26,500 years ago)[2] was the world's most recent super eruption at a VEI-8 eruption.-wikipedia DJ) Climate "change"/collapse will increase chances of both mega quakes and mega eruptions. Most likely first in/near the Arctic-since ice and snow melt and earthmass lift. Greenland has 3km of ice on it-in the center. That is pushing the island 1km down. So less pressure from the ice means lifting of the land. "We live in interesting times". http://www.thebigwobble.org/2019/06/watch-this-space-major-quake-and.html: June's incredible uptick of major quakes and volcanic activity continued yesterday with another mag 6.3 off the north island of New Zealand. The quake is part of a large swarm which coincides with Whakaari volcano unrest also off the north island. Yesterdays magnitude 6.3 Earthquake was the 6th major quake (M6 or higher) to hit the Kermadec Islands region, north of New Zealand, this month. Besides the 6 major quakes which included a massive mag 7.2 almost 100 more quakes ranging from mag 4.5 to mag 5.9 have also rocked the area. See map above. Meanwhile, scientists have raised the Volcanic Alert Level at Whakaari - White Island to level 2, following new unrest. The island off the Bay of Plenty presents a greater likelihood of erupting. |

Hey Dutch you were right a big one in California today July 4th! But like the seismologist from Caltech says...I also predict rain in Kuai today. Earthquakes will always happen big and small. We all just need to be prepped for all the S^it that will happen. But if Yellowstone blows we are all in big trouble.

Flu Mom, The chances for major "supervolcanic"eruptions are quite small. Earthquakes and hurricanes may do a lot more damage.
But when a supervolcano does go "full scale" it may change history. When https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campanian_Ignimbrite_eruption goes-to a possible max- it may be the end of Europe. When Yellowstone goes full scale it is goodbye for North America. (In both cases nuclear power plants may bring that much damage it will end all life.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_catastrophic_risk (Due to climate collapse dangers are growing very fast for some of these events. For that matter-a "mega burst of methane" in the Arctic may be "very strong" cause a quake of M10+ maybe even push the planet out of its normal route around the sun.) DJ-If there would be some logic in quakes after the 6.2 Bella-Bella Canada quake yesterday and the 6.4 Searles Valley Cal/US later on would ther be a Mexico-west coast (US border) quake 6.6-7 ? Today, or tomorrow ? (DJ-I think a quake can cause further quakes but energy may be released in many forms-swarms of several small quakes at several spots or a major quake in one spot. Maybe computers one day may be able to deal with data from seismic-sensors and be able to calculate a next quake. For now maybe some "major events" may be some sort of predictable-Dutchsinse may have some point-but has to miss a lot of events as well.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txQFnGZvuHo&feature=share 7/04/2019 -- HOW TO FORECAST AN EARTHQUAKE -- Fundamental principles |

https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2019-07-05/california-hit-over-150-aftershocks-following-64-mag-quake
One of the aftershocks was recorded at 5.4 magnitude, striking just northeast of Ridgecrest at 4:07 a.m. on Friday, according to the USGS, which says that there's a 20% chance of an earthquake of magnitude 6 or higher occurring in the next week, and an 80% chance of a magnitude 5 or higher quake, according to ABC15. http://www.thebigwobble.org/2019/07/warning-mag-66-californian-quake.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YO1uze8sPFoMrMBB333 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhuqAcQvJt0 Dutchsinse |

A 7.1 ! https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2019-07-05/seismologist-50-chance-another-major-quake-within-week-robust-aftershocks-continue
Update (1145ET): Less than 12 hours after seisomologist Lucy Jones warned of another large quake, a massive 7.1 quake just hit 17km NNE of Ridgecrest. https://www.rt.com/usa/463493-southern-california-quake-7/ (DJ-When one would follow the reasoning of Dutchsinse maybe-since the aftershocks remain-there still is a chance for a further M6/7 in the same area coming 48hrs ? Dutchsinse (a.o.) was correct in warning there might be a major next shock-only it turned out to be above his calculated 6.5 ) |

http://www.thebigwobble.org/2019/07/more-than-6000-aftershocks-in-last-7.html
DJ-Is this helpfull, or sensationalist ? https://halturnerradioshow.com/index.php/en/news-page/news-nation/wild-claim-california-to-crack-in-two-portion-to-submerge-in-ocean The chances for a "big one" for the SW US may be up a little since smaller quakes go on-but most likely that will calm down. The energy that could cause "a big one"is spent in a swarm of thousends of smaller quakes. In theory there is a chance for "very major events" M9+ but "California breaking up in several parts" would need far more than M9. (Fear sells) |

DJ-A few months ago-if I am correct-we had "less than normal" quakes-so it could be a "statistical correction". Still with many regions having "overdue" major quakes one may believe chances for a major quake (Tokyo, Istanbul, US-Cascadia, New Madrid,Alaska, Chile to name some area's) are increased at the moment. |

https://halturnerradioshow.com/index.php/en/news-page/news-nation/major-earthquake-m6-4-off-oregon-coast-in-cascadia-subduction-zone:
UPDATE 2:51 PM EDT -- It has now been several hours since the major earthquake and there have been NO AFTERSHOCKS. This is extremely bad. This means the M6.4 quake may very well be a FORESHOCK of a coming, larger, quake. West coast residents are urged to have Emergency Preps of Water, canned food, fuel and medicines at the ready in case a very large quake takes place. DON'T WAIT, get the supplies now. DJ-I have very limited knowledge on seismology, but I find it strange there are no aftershocks. Since there have been "increased seismic activity" on the west coast for a longer period could this be an indication of a "build up", was thee pressure released in the M6.3 quake ? Also "Dorian" moving towards the US/Florida can increase seismic risks. |

DJ-If the "big one" is a M9+ most likely-looking at statistics-it is overdue "somewere" on the planet. Most likely you could even claim-statisticly-a "major" (M8+) quake will hit the US (soon=this year). Problem with statistics is they do not provide an exact time or place. From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_earthquakes_in_the_United_States Cascadia, New Madrid, Alaska are likely. Still Yellowstone or California https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_earthquakes_in_California, Oklahoma https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_earthquakes_in_Oklahoma are possible-but https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laurentiamay offer surprises. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_earthquakes_in_Canada Melt of Greenland (land)ice is pushing the Greenland landmass upward-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-glacial_rebound. |

http://www.thebigwobble.org/2019/12/waiting-for-big-one-3rd-major-quake.html, https://halturnerradioshow.com/index.php/en/news-page/news-nation/another-strong-quake-hits-cascadia-subduction-zone
DJ-Maybe enough pressure was released by these major quakes, maybe these major quakes are a warning for a stronger quake-most likely on the pacific coast (somewere from Alaska to Chili?) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreshock; Foreshock activity has been detected for about 40% of all moderate to large earthquakes,[2] and about 70% for events of M>7.0.[3] They occur from a matter of minutes to days or even longer before the main shock; for example, the 2002 Sumatra earthquake is regarded as a foreshock of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake with a delay of more than two years between the two events.[4] Some great earthquakes (M>8.0) show no foreshock activity at all, such as the M8.6 1950 India–China earthquake.[3] - An increase in seismic activity in an area has been used as a method of predicting earthquakes, most notably in the case of the 1975 Haicheng earthquake in China, where an evacuation was triggered by an increase in activity. However, most earthquakes lack obvious foreshock patterns and this method has not proven useful, as most small earthquakes are not foreshocks, leading to probable false alarms.[7] Earthquakes along oceanic transform faults do show repeatable foreshock behaviour, allowing the prediction of both the location and timing of such earthquakes.[8] DJ-The last 24 hours did see M6+ quakes in Argentina, Colombia and (west) Canada. In the western US there is a continuation of smaller seismic activity. As far as I can see it is very hard to predict earthquakes. |
