I want to learn about the use of BASIL in food storage, and also about the FREEZING of non-perishable food items before storing them away.

Is it FRESH basil, or DRIED, or some powdered form from the spice rack? WHAT precisely is the basil used for? How long will it last to serve this purpose? How often should it be replaced?

What grains and other items should be frozen prior to long term storage? How long must they remain in the freezer?

Wish I'd known about this a few months ago in the dead of winter, when freezer space wouldn't have been an issue, having the entire great outdoors to freeze anything, in any quantity, in.

Other questions.....

What will be the role of the National Guard?

Isn't it a fact that doctors and clinics have been independently stockpiling all sorts of medicines for YEARS now, in case of a terrorist attack?

Are there actually NO national stockpiles of the chemicals needed by the water plants in cities????? Mike Osterholm said that we only had a few weeks supplies of the water purification chemicals.... that is VERY hard to believe.... and IF true, then whatever do we have a national government for????

on the spreading of the flu. I haven't had much luck on info in this area.

If people show up at my door since they  have run out of supplies they will
have to stay seperated from me for how many days to be sure they are not
carrying the flu.

How long is flu contagious  in a person before and after symptons?

I will be keeping close watch on this sight, very informitive.

  Thanks to all

I would suggest at least ten days quarantine and if you are planning on having people show up, have a quarintine area ready for them..I have planned on my backdeck for that..even for myself if I had to go out for any reason..garage might be good for this...there are some excellent posts on this subject...try the search feature and type in quarintine...there are many recommendations on how to do this..althou all is not fool proof we still have no idea what we will be dealing iwht,it is in our best interested, to be better safe then sorry...

Omega:  HEllo and welcome to the forum, feel free to peruse around in the different rooms as we have different topics.

I am going to asnwer part of your question regarding Basil: ITs an herb can be used fresh, or dried form.  IT is mainly use to provide flavor in tomatoe or pesto dishes.  In the garden , when planted right next to tomatoes> repels flying insects. From what I read about herb storage,  Herbs are usualy good for about a year, after that it is recommended to replenish with a new batch. The herb that I have used to keep my flour from getting bugs is bay leaf,  wHen I open a container of flour, I stick a bay leaf inside, no bugs it works for me.

I am not here to reason, I am here to create"

Hello, Calendula.

Thanks for all the information. I was aware about using bay leaves to discourage bug infestation in flour; however, in another posting on this forum, there is mention that the "most important info learned on this site" was to put basil among your preps.

So, I wanted to learn what was the use for the basil -- cuz, really, it's pretty easy to grown.

Here's the URL to where I saw it mentioned:

I have an infant and have been stocking up on N95 masks.  But if I have to go out with her how do I get her to keep one on.  Are the safe for kids or do they have ones that are specifically for kids.  This really complicates things.

RebeccaS, that is going to stump us all. You could try giving one to play with
provided it is safe to do so of course. Your little one would then not be
suspicious of it. How about making a mobile out of masks and out of reach
first? This was a serious attempt to assist but I'm not sure if you will take it
that way. It sounds stupid now.

How about a front sling or pack and have the infant facing you. use a receiving blanket over their head. Better yet, if possible leave your baby at home with a family member.
For generations we have lived not wisely but too well. Now we must pay.

My questions - some of which others have already asked:

1/ Is it going to be safe to grow vegetables with birds flying about and pooping on them?

2/ How long does the virus live outside the body, for example, on mail, on bank keypads etc?

3/ What is the correct number of drops of bleach per litre/gallon of water? There are so many conflicting ideas on this.

4/ What is really meant by 'airborne'? Airborne in droplet form from sneezing/coughing, or carried on the wind over long distances?

5/ What are my chances of surviving this thing if I don't leave the house at all for three months?
