Summary of the latest:

  • A terror attack took place in Barcelona when a van plowed into a crowd in Las Ramblas, killing at least 13 and injuring over 20
  • The Spanish passport of a person of Moroccan origin was found at the scene of the attack, TV3 reports.
  • Spanish public broadcaster RTVE says that one suspect in the Barcelona van attack has been arrested.
  • Spanish police say there is no one at large in any bar in central Barcelona.
  • There are unconfirmed reports of a second attack.
  • This would be the deadliest terrorist attack in Spain since 2004 bombing, when Islamist militants placed bombs on commuter trains in Madrid, killing 191 people and wounding more than 1,800.

Update 8: The Catalan Police says that in response to reports, there is nobody held up in a bar in Barcelona. Meanwhile, Fox reports that someone has opened fire on police in a second possible attack:

Interesting that the US Nazis have borrowed the terror techniques pioneered by ISIS, isn't it?

Isn't that the truth.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_attack_on_the_Dutch_royal_family In 2009 a man drove through a crowd in Apeldoorn-the Netherlands during a royal visit killing 8 people. (One of the stories is that the royal-bus did have some electric protection against metal objects moving high speed towards the bus).

Moving a car into a crowd is not a new tactic. The CIA did warn for a possible attack with a car a few months back. (Since the CIA "produced" IS and Al-qaeda they have "good contacts".)

What was done with that info ?

Putting blockades in streets with lots of pedestrians (Ramblas 300.000 at that time !) could have made a difference.

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-08-17/spanish-police-kill-four-people-response-separate-terrorist-plot The Barcelona terror-act was part of a larger (IS ?) operation. Is there a connection with refugees coming into the EU recently via Spain ? (After cutting off the Balcan and Italy-route).

Were the terrorists know to an intelligence group ? What was done with that info ? https://www.rt.com/news/400053-barcelona-terrorism-new-reality/

Via electronic surveilance already there is that much data that it is getting impossible to analyze it in time. Gathering more data might block doing something with that info further.

I was in England with my children in June when a truck was driven into a crowd on a bridge in London, and although we weren't at the scene at the time, it was very unnerving. I hadn't been to the UK in some years and really noticed an increased police presence on the streets. As we toured around the tourist sites up and down the country, I found myself on constant alert for potential terrorist attacks. It was very strange seeing armed police at the changing of the guard at Windsor castle.

I felt quite relieved as we fly into the middle east and I knew we would soon be back in New Zealand.
Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

Thanks for your recollection, KiwiMum!

I lived and worked in the UK in the early 1990s, and it was undergoing "the troubles" with the Irish Republican Army.   Heathrow Airport was periodically attacked with mortars, and heavily armed UK special forces chaps with dogs would sometimes board our planes, looking for "something."  Very unnerving!

Once, I was in the airport, and loud alarms sounded off!  Then, bomb shield doors started to slide over the openings for newsstands & souvenir shops!!  I had never experienced anything like that, so I was a bit of a dunce....others who were more savvy rolled under the blast doors just in time!!

Any of us who have travelled probably have similar stories, I'd love to hear them!  This is an important learning moment, and we should share.  Be safe, Chuck
