Finally we're getting the news here in New Zealand about this flu, and interestingly, this week a friend of mine has the flu and she caught it from her children as it's going around their school.

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

I've just looked it up, and the killer flu is A (H3N2) and this is what the current available flu vaccine this year covers in NZ:

2017 Seasonal influenza vaccine

What are the seasonal strains for 2017?

This year’s seasonal influenza vaccine will offer protection against the following strains:

  • A (H1N1): an A/Michigan/45/2015 (H1N1) - like virus   (new strain)
  • A (H3N2): an A/Hong Kong/4801/2014 (H3N2) - like virus
  • B/Brisbane/60/2008 - like virus
Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

Odd that Auckland is about the same distance from Sydney,as Perth, and as I said in another post, lots more coughs and sneezes on the train this week here....

I got my high dose Flu shot last Sat. Has:

Sorry when you are as old as I am you try to avoid getting flu and/or pneumonia. I am getting the "other" Pneumonia shot mid - October. Gives flu shot a time to take hold.

I work in a school and the kids are germ spreaders just a fact. Love them but they are germ spreaders!

Schools are like a giant petri dish! Do you get a booster later in the year?

TEEN FLU DEATH

Teen, 19, becomes latest victim of Australia’s ‘unprecedented’ deadly flu outbreak that has killed HUNDREDS

Nathan Brown, of New South Wales, was in a coma for four weeks before passing away in hospital with his family at his side

A POPULAR teenager has become the latest victim of the flu outbreak in Australia after being struck down with the killer illness a month ago.

Nathan Brown, 19, died in hospital on Friday morning following a four-week battle against the deadly strain influenza A.

Nathan - who was in a medical coma -  had been suffering complications including kidney failure, acute pneumonia, a staph infection and collapsed lungs.

Now devastated friends and family of the avid fisherman have taken to social media  to express their sorrow at the news of his death, reports the Newcastle Herald.

"We had some good memories back when we were young fellas, heart wrenching to hear you've passed away, rest in peace mate," one friend wrote.

Another pal added: "Life is so cruel. I'll treasure all the memories we've shared over the years Nath. Sending my condolences to the family in this hard time."

Nathan's uncle Peter Brown said the family had been praying by his hospital bed since he was struck down.

"It just goes to show that this flu can attack anybody," Mr Brown said earlier this week.

"It really can hit you no matter what age you are. If a very fit and healthy 19 year old can be struck down as badly as him… It has come as a big shock to everybody."

Go Fund Me page was set up to support Nathan's family following his hospitalisation, raising more than £8,000 in just eight days.

Experts from the Influenza Specialist Group estimate that influenza's various strains can cause more than 18,000 hospitalisations each year in Australia.

There are fears the UK could be set for its worst flu outbreak in 50 years if the strain makes its way to Britain.

This year the Australian flu season is believed to have peaked mid-August, affecting an "unprecedented" number of people.

New South Wales recorded the highest number of flu cases with 288 flu related deaths, including three children, while in Victoria there were 95 flu related deaths.

Comment by Technophobe:  It was the deaths of older teenagers and young adults which were the first signs of the exceptional deadliness of the 1916 spanish flu.

Just copied Flumom and got the high dose shot. Normal shot never bothered me but now I can't raise my arm above my shoulder! Hurts like the devil! It's worth the trouble!

cytokine storm? That's what normally takes out the strong! Was it H3N2 or H1N1? Any indications of mutations?

Yes, it was cytokine storm.  At least that is what scientists now believe.

The important bit is that it was the strong dying.  That was the first indication of trouble ahead.

I am going to tell my son to get the Quad instead of the Tri this year if he can get it. He is young and strong that is scary about Australia. The A is in this year's shot.
