It as bad enough when I tracked the network of secret labs across the United States that had poor quality control and several had incidents where viruses escaped the lab that could destroy America.

Now we are on the verge of a biologic war with a terrorist threat which we have neither the medical system, the resolve, or the ability to stop if it goes wrong. We have dozens of unstable nation states including North Korea waiting for us to develop the ultimate virus which they can steal and use on the rest of the world - and they will.

It is an irresponsible step in our history and I will state this without reserve and with great conviction - if we develop a super strain - it will get out and our country will then fall having no defense against our enemies.

Happy New Year America. CDC what are you thinking?

The pause came after several incidents involving the mishandling of potentially dangerous pathogens at government laboratories.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention accidentally exposed dozens of workers to anthrax in 2014, and a subsequent investigation detailed other instances in which lab workers did not follow protocol. Around that time, vials of the deadly smallpox virus were found in a cardboard box in an unsecured refrigerator at the National Institutes of Health's campus in Bethesda, Maryland.
In Tuesday's announcement, the institutes said that approved research would take place only if the researcher and institution where the research is being conducted demonstrate the "capacity and commitment to conduct it safely and securely, and have the ability to respond rapidly" should things go wrong.

There are multiple examples through the last few days when bad viruses escaped labs - especially in the case of SARS and now MRSA.

It also said that the research must be "ethically justifiable" and that any pathogen created, transferred or used in the research "must be reasonably judged to be a credible source of a potential future human pandemic."
Dr. Tom Frieden, who was the director of the CDC from 2009 to 2017, applauded Tuesday's decision, saying such studies "help scientists better understand how dangerous organisms work, with the ultimate goal of learning how to stop them."

The American response to the 2009 Pandemic was terrible. Huge amounts of disinformation and all lying about how many were sick and how many were dying was not even hinted at until a year after it happened.  It surged through New York - I covered this in posts here - and more than 500,000 people were infected in New York were infected while CDC put out numbers like 50-60 thousand.

I kicked off of sites for posting this numbers and I still remember what happened.  Never before in the history of the world have we had the genetic technology to make such lethal viruses which could wipe out 60-80% of the human population with no vaccine and fall into the hands of rogue nations and especially Kim Jong-un who is actively trying not only to use computer viruses - but researching Anthrax - Smallpox - and buying bio weapons from places such as Pakistan.

So, we decide to beat nature to developing the worst strains through genetic engineering.

I mention The Stand - because that was the visionary novel written by Stephen King about the escape of a virus that wipes out America from a U.S. lab.

"Not if but when" - we are not safe anymore if our scientists continue to create strains far worse than anything nature dreamed of in insecure labs.

Reality - what we don't know about incidents of irresponsibility in labs across the U.S.

This is fairly recent - within the last few years - it only takes a few of these vials either stolen or used by terrorists to destroy America -

I've been in touch with Dr. Lipsitch, and am a signatory to the Cambridge Charter which objected to this research.

But the decision to lift the moratorium did not sit well with scientists who have long warned of the risks of such research — and questioned its benefits. “A human is better at spreading viruses than an aerosol” that might breach a lab’s physical containment, said epidemiologist Marc Lipsitch of Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, who has calculated that the risk of a lab-acquired infection sparking a pandemic is greater than recognized.

“The engineering is not what I’m worried about. Accident after accident has been the result of human mistakes.”

He nevertheless called the new policy “a small step forward” because it sets up a formal process for evaluating whether the controversial experiments should receive federal funding. But because geneticallymodified viruses “risk creating an accidental pandemic” and “have done almost nothing to improve our preparedness for pandemic,” he said, “my view is that a review of the sort proposed should disallow such experiments.”

Ebola virus: Scientist in Europe accidentally exposes himself to deadly disease

A SCIENTIST has accidentally been exposed to the deadly Ebola virus.

Published 21st April 2018

Worried World Health Organisation bosses have rushed a shipment of an experimental vaccine to treat the man.

The UN health agency revealed that Hungarian officials asked for help after a scientist working in a normally secure laboratory had an “accidental exposure” to Ebola.

The WHO said it has now helped immunise the scientist with an experimental vaccine.

It also helped send two unlicensed drugs.

EBOLA: A scientist has accidentaly exposed himself to the deadly virus in Hungry

The scientist was immediately isolated in a Budapest hospital and the risk of Ebola spreading to another person is said to be "negligible”.

It noted that the labour worker didn't have any symptoms of the disease – which has a fatality rate of about 50%.

The disease is passed through bodily fluids such as blood, semen and sweat.

It starts with fever and fatigue before causing multiple organ failure and massive internal bleeding.

Ebola was first seen in the West African nation of Guinea in December 2013, and went on to claim more than 11,000 lives.

The pandemic crippled the already volatile health systems in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

It spread throughout West Africa, reaching Nigeria, Spain, the US and the UK.

Almost 30,000 people across the three nations were infected with the disease, which is spread via contact with an infected person's bodily fluids.

The outbreak was catastrophic, leaving whole communities in ruins, thousands of children orphans and millions facing starvation.

Several Brits also contracted the disease in 2014, including Pauline Cafferkey who was working in Sierra Leone as an aid worker.

She was diagnosed with Ebola virus when she flew home to Glasgow after working at an Ebola treatment centre in Kerry Town.

It was thought she contracted the virus as a result of wearing a visor instead of goggles.

Undead Arctic microbes feel the heat, unleash disease

For hundreds of years, animals and people have been buried in the frozen ground in the Arctic. Now, that permafrost is thawing and it’s exposing those bodies, and whatever killed them, to the outside world.

Michael Bruce is a public health physician and medical epidemiologist based at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Anchorage. He told a crowd last week at the Bear Tooth Theater in Anchorage that infectious diseases are a growing threat throughout the Arctic.

“I think Louis Pasteur was right when he said “it’s the microbes that will have the last word,” Bruce said. “Or is it, it’s the zombies that will have the last word?”

Bruce spoke at length about the zombie apocalypse that could be happening in the Arctic. But, it turns out he didn’t mean the “shuffling around, eating brains, making zombie noises” kind of apocalypse.

“I think my analogy to zombies was more the ability of infectious diseases to come in and wreak havoc on populations and the planet,” he said. “Not so much, reviving dead bodies to come back to life.”

Still, there are some very real threats locked up in all of that ice and frozen permafrost.

In Russia, for example, an anthrax outbreak two years ago killed one 12-year-old boy and sickened dozens of other people.

That outbreak has been linked to the region’s reindeer herds and melting permafrost.

“What happened is reindeer herders in the Yamal Peninsula were grazing their reindeer over reindeer that had died of anthrax decades or centuries ago,” Bruce said. “And they then  contracted anthrax because of this and were exposed to it because it melted out of the permafrost.”

Bruce also said that anthrax is a very resistant organism. Once it gets into the environment, it can be hard to kill. Other types of infectious diseases might be more difficult to spread.

“That’s kind of the big question, I think, is whether those bacteria and viruses survive intact,” he said.

Research is showing that there are some that survive intact, but Bruce said most of them don’t appear to be causing diseases in human beings.

Still, a warming Arctic could cause Alaskans to be sickened in other ways. Bruce said there are more ticks coming into the state. The pests can hitch rides on pets or wild birds.

Bruce said the ticks do better in a warmer climate and they may be able to migrate into the state, survive, and spread diseases.
