West Nile virus confirmed in Gwinnett County
Posted: Aug 22, 2018 10:44 PM GDT Updated: Aug 22, 2018 10:45 PM GDT GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS46) - The West Nile virus is in Gwinnett County, and health officials are investigating as one person recovers from the illness. The news is alarming to some Gwinnett County residents. “It’s dangerous,” said Geoffiey MCllaw. According to the CDC, about one in five people infected by the West Nile virus develops symptoms including headache, fever, vomiting and muscle pain. The symptoms may develop two to 15 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. “I think they’re everywhere, really and truly,” said Mcllaw. “I don’t think we can stop them.” There are ways to limit mosquito population near your property. According to the county health department, one of the most effective ways to keep mosquitos from around your home is to practice what’s called “tip and toss”. After it rains, you should tip and toss any standing water, where mosquitos may breed, including clogged gutters. You should also avoid being outdoors if possible at dusk and dawn, when mosquitos with the virus are active. You should wear loose-fitting and long-sleeved clothing. You should use insect repellent containing the chemical Deet and you should make sure your home doors are sealed. “This is the first time I’ve heard about it, so I know it can be very dangerous,” said Gwinnett County resident Will Ross.
