I wouldn't say "explode," but it will certainly establish itself via community infection.
There is no putting this genie back in the bottle. So the question is, what next? There are no doubt thousands of tourists from our home countries who will be returning from holidays in Italy and other destinations who will come back, test "OK" on thermometers, and then become ill. They will bring it home for us. Unlike influenza, there is no antiviral (tamiflu etc.) and little chance of an effective vaccine for up to a year. All we can do is hunker down and watch. This does not bode well for the Trump administration, which gutted a lot of pandemic preparedness budgets to find money for its border wall and other initiatives.
