If you get the avian flu and survive, are you then immune

Rocky, if you get H5N1 & survive you are immune to that strain. You would not be immune to any of the mutated strains that vary from the strain that you were infected with, although having once had any H5N1 virus your body would be better prepared to fight the next one and the likelihood that it would be a life and death issue would be diminished. One reason H5N1 is so deadly to humans now is that we have no innate immunity to H5 hemmaglutinin (sp?), it will be a novel virus to our immune system. Hope this helps! |

If you read up on the 1918 flu pandemic it came in waves and some would get it in the first wave, but then did not survive the 2nd or 3rd wave of it...and since it has been a long time for a pandemic..and even in 1918 they kept very sparse records..except it hit..and how fast..
