I don't have huge amounts of beans yet but plan to.  I know that they are good cooked with ham soup base and some spices etc, but does anyone have good recipes for good, sweet, dark baked beans?  It is one of the few things that I have never made!  I know it probably won't be the same without the chucks of bacon fat or salt pork, but I will bet there are some good recipes out there anyway.

What do you put in them?  Molasses?  Mustard? Brown sugar?  I don't know.

Thanks!

I forgot to ask what kind of beans are usually used for baked beans.  Pintos?

3 cans regular sized pork and beans
1/2 cup molasses (Grandmas molasses is the best)
3/4 cup Ketchup
2 Tablespoons mustard
2 Tablespoons Worchestershire Sauce
1 medium onion, chopped
6 slices bacon

Fry onion and bacon until half done.  Add bacon, onion and the grease to the other ingredients.  Mix.  Bake at 325 for about 45 minutes.

Boston baked beans are ususlly a Navy bean, i think.  I take my bean pot and cut up an onion in the bottom, toss in whatever meat i have (anything but fish should do.)  I take  a can of Bushs Baked Beans, add some molassas, mustard and brown sugar to it, mix it up and dump it in the pot then bake for a couple of hours on low heat.

Wow, those sound good.  The dry bean recipes do take a lot of fuel don't they?  Hmm.....I might want to re-think the dry bean thing.  Fuel could be a real issue.
Thanks all!

If fuel is at a premium there are some other options for cooking beans which have been mentioned in other threads:  Some are using pressure cookers, you can also cook beans with charcoal, dutch oven style.  There is also a pioneer recipe where you build a fire in a pit, let the fire burn down to coals, then place a pot with your bean recipe and plenty of water in the hole,  cover tightly, place coals and ashes around pot, cover with dirt and leave for 6-8 hours.

You can also cook beans in a thermos.  Kat doe has done more work with this.  Good luck.

Don't forget the solar ovens...those really sound great.  One of the posters here has boiled water in hers...no fuel needed except the sun.

They tend to give a lot of fuel also. Might want to eat them when you don't have to be cooped up with others.

I'm trying to buy all canned beans and all instant rice.  I'll buy some bulk rice and dried beans for the ultimate emergency, but I am trying to  look for ways to conserve as much fuel and water as possible right  now.
Frodo failed.... Bush has the ring.

KatDoe67 has been working with a thermos, she might have an idea. Also, you can easily make a solar oven, takes no fuel at all!
