New as I am to all this, I'm trying my darndest to save money and reduce storage.  Since we get alot of rain in southern Mississippi, I was wondering if a could tape a bunch of plastic tarps/sheeting (that I already have) together and lay them on the side of my hill.  Then, if I gathered the ends together (and taped them) around a big garbage container, I'd have a makeshift collecting system (treating the water afterwards, of course).  A little more trouble than getting it from the roof run-off, but might be purer and certainly better than running out.  I'm a little concerned about my roof anyway because it's new (a gift from my friend, Katrina) and it's probably leaching chemicals.  Any other ideas on this?

One benefit of this set up is that you can fold it up when not in use to avoid bird droppings. When you see the rain approaching, you unfold the tarp(s). Or you can wait until it's raining and then deploy the tarp. Just flashback to your childhood and go splashin'!
