Do you think you will prep more since the show or will you go on as normal..

If as I've heard, there was no specific encouragment to lay in preparations, then it's both a relief and worrisome.

A relief, because I can continue to get my preps finalized without dealing with shortages, high prices, and competition.

Worrisome, because if people don't start prepping soon, it will be a mad rush at the last minute, meaning those who are a tad slow off the mark will end up going without.  These people will be reduced to accepting whatever meagre government handouts are available, or looting.

I'm seriously wondering if she was pressured to edit out the most "action oriented" aspects of the show at the last minute.  Ted Koppel also was planning a Bird Flu segment for Nightline just before he retired.  He takes the subject very seriously.  I have never heard his explanation for why this episode either never aired or never got produced.  Perhaps he was also pressured to "drop it".

I watched the episode too. I thought it wasn't bad, considering. And, sure I wish there had been more emphasis on individual and family preparation. It mostly focused on institutional issues. However, that said, I do think that it has done more to focus attention on the issue and to take it seriously as a threat than almost anything I have seen. If I hadn't been already tuned into this issue and watched Oprah this afternoon, I would have started trying to prepare my family. I would start laying in supplies.

I, personally, sent another order into emergency essentials today and also am going to Costco tonight. Will let you know if anything is different at Costco! -- Libby

I was actually a bit shocked that Oprah and her guest did really discuss about the prepping. All that was really said was to have 4 to 5 weeks worth of food and water. NOTHING was really said about what types of foods, and how to store them or anything.

At first I was convinced that Oprah's show was going to cause panic in the streets, but after seeing the show, I doubt it will have much effect.

Better to be safe than sorry....

I wouldn't say that it won't have much affect, we are already seeing an increased number of callers, who have referred specifically to the show.  Some are a bit panicked.  I'd like to advise everyone that panic won't help, everybody is going to do the best that they can.

I think the next few days will reveal how many people took the message to heart.  I didn't watch the show, but I have read several commentaries, doesn't sound like Oprah went far enough on telling people to prepare.  But the system would instantly crash if 10 million people suddenly decided to buy a years supply of foods and medicines and masks.

That's why panic won't help.  The capacity of the system is going to max out, very, very quickly.  I'm open 7 days a week now to try and help out, and I'm sure others will be doing the same.

My problem with Oprah's show  is, IMO, all she did is tell people WHY to be afraid, and didnt go into detail enough as to what they can do to be proactive.

I agree that there will be a few more people hitting Costco after watching Oprah's show, but do I expect the shelves to be cleared out, and people fighting to the death over the last can of beans....NO.

Better to be safe than sorry....

Survivsl;

for once I am glad to hear what you posted! That means that a few individuals actually caught the underlying tones of what is being said and went the second mile to do what they could to prep! For me this indicates that while the majority did not catch on there were those that did and if we can do this in a systimatic fashion...there is hope for us yet!

After watchin the Oprah Show I went and got a second solar generator I didnt really want to buy something that expensive now but I   felt that  something essential could become impossible to get once it become urgent.   In the store they only had one as is.   It got  me thinking that I should try to focus on what would sell outfirst in a emergency..

I was a fraid of starting a garden worried about looters but I think if the awarness of the flu is going to be gradual then  thereis a better chance my neighbours will also have a garden most of would be happy to share what we could grow.

Oprah may have a large following but it will take more celebrities coming forward to get people to prepare.

I have been reading posts here and looking on other web sites now for a while. I have been slower to prepare because my family thinks I am crazy and should be commited..lol. I have purchased canned goods and just ordered 3M N95 masks today. I caught a bit of the Oprah show and it seems like people around where I am just don't take this seriously at all! I don't live in a major city but in the suburbs on about 1/4 acre. I am already thinking about where to plant my garden, put up my pool (for extra water), and build a small outhouse area if need be (my lot is a funky shape).

This is my first post and I was wondering if anyone else lives on a small piece of land or if their friends and family all think they are crazy(including husband!)

Thanks! This place has been my best source of info!

May God protect us all.

Yes. I live in the suburbs (about 1/4 acre of land too)  AND my family also thinks I am crazy when I talk about preparing for the bird flu.  I just recently started preparing as well, but you will be suprised how much you will be able to accomplish in a short amount of time.  I have pretty much stopped discussing most of my plans to prepare for a pandemic, but I try to keep my family and friends updated as much as possible.  (I have not given up hope that one day I will be able to convince them of the importance of preparations)

There is a lot of great info here !!   There are just so many things that I never would have thought of planning for--- or things I would have thought of too late to do anything about!!  Everyone here is really nice and really helpful.   Welcome to the forum!!!!

Welcome aboard Chefmom!

I laughed at your question about family thinking us crazy.  My family thought that BEFORE BF, now they are sure.  But I don't care.

As a serious point, I told my husband at the beginning of 2005 when I started bringing in preps and spending a lot of money, "...yeah well, look at it this way: It's cheaper than therapy!"  Had he not left me in peace to prep to my heart's content I would have been unbearable to live with and so manically panicked he would have had to commit me.  But prepping empowered me.

I grew up on a quarter acre lot, that's a lot of land these days!  You can do tremendous things as long as it's arable.

Greetings Bruss,

Ted Koppel did actually produce a Bird Flu Nightline: Outbreak - The Next Pandemic. I am however not sure if this is the "one" you were mentinioning.

Here is an audio recording of that show. I am not sure when it actually aired:

Hi Chefmom!  I'm new here to but I have found great information on this site.  My aunt first told me about the BF a few months ago and I thought she was crazy.  Then the other day I found this website and started reading my little heart out.  I have found some interesting things here and I have even emailed them to my aunt.  She is so happy that I don't think she is crazy anymore.  She's been stocking up on things along with my mother and they have a pretty good supply now.  I have just started getting things and taking them over to her house.  She lives with my mother so, my husband and child will go to their house if this thing hits home.  I have posted this site to other sections of the forum.  www.planforflu.com  they have a great list of foods you should starting getting.  I have printed out the list and I'm going to start buying things 1 or 2 at the time every trip to sams.  I said before that I have gotten 5 cases of babywipes b/c they will come in handy for everything... going to the bathroom, bathing off some and washing hands if there is no water.  They do cost a little more than TP but they take up less room to store and they smell good!  Hope this helps!
