I'm new here, so pardon me if this has been discussed before. I didn't see anything about it.
I'm making preparations to move with family members to a family cabin in N. Arizona if the flu goes pandemic. I have a hobby farm with various and assorted livestock. The chickens and turkeys I've got will be toast -- probably butchered and made into jerky -- in the event of a human pandemic. (Or butchered and frozen if H5N1, the avian-only variant, makes it here.) Cats I know can catch it, but my cats are inside cats and would have no more risk of exposure than I would. That leaves my dogs, my goats, and the horse I've been contemplating buying. Dogs and goats I'd definitely like to take with me -- the dogs as an early-warning system for two and four legged predators; the goats as meat and milk on the hoof. (And the bigger goats make rather good pack animals, useful for bringing back firewood and game.) Has anyone heard anything about H5N1 infection in goats or dogs? I haven't turned anything up in searching the web. Horses DO get influenza, but they have their own strains that are not transmissable to humans. Can they also get H5N1? I'm on the fence about getting a horse; they're expensive and time consuming to care for -- I don't have one right now -- but in a SHTF scenario, having one horse around for rapid transportation could be useful -- particularly if we were watching the road for strangers. |

Good questions and thoughtful strategies! In the reading on this site, thus far, there have been many different kinds of animals with unexplained deaths, such as monkeys, cows, pigs, dolphins, starfish, etc. At the time, we are litter training our little miniature schnauzer so if social isolation is ordered she wouldn't have to go outside. |
