Today I went a bought my first dried milk. It was carnation brand. The good thing was that the expiration on it was January of 2008. It wasn't that expensive either. I did notice that it was moving off the shelves.

Be good. Colloidal silver, from what I remember, is a type of antibiotic used in many years ago and seems to be making a resurgance. I suggest google.com to get additional information.-K

I'm new here but with all of the information I have learned here and some intense shopping trips I probably have about two months worth right now. I will keep on prepping, even though I don't think that you can ever be done. Thanks for all the great advice and information!

Ionic Silver... I believe some people are going to try and use this as a water purifier but this stuff is actually not as good as god ol' Clorox and is in fact seriously dangerous. It's a wood preserver that stops termites and brown rot. People that have tried to use this as a water purifier have found themselves stricken with Argyria, which is a permanent discoloration of the skin. When people have Argyria they look like their entire body has been tattooed with silver, but otherwise they're fine. If you've bought this crap, I'd recommend using it only as a wood preserver and use filters/bleach for drinking water. When the BF hits it'll be kinda funny to see the people in communities that used ionic Silver for their drinking water purification. What'll we name them? Shinies? I believe there are other problems that ingesting large amounts of reactive metals can cause, most of them fatal, but everyone reading this should stay away from the silver products. Anyway as my stockpiling timeframe I've got right around two months of food/water, my M-5 and M-3 medical bags I heisted when I was in Best of all I've got a team of five other guys who are all as well prepared as I. I believe that having a good well prepared team of guys (people) that work well together is by far the most important thing. They'll bail your arse out in an instant when you need it. Everyone that's preparing should at the very least have a good rifle of at least .223 (5.56) to fend off those that will come to steal your stuff. Also, you'll be able to hunt pretty much any edible animals. I could go into good rifles to use for survival, but I'm pretty sure not too many care. All political views aside, even the least intelligent person around can see that when The BF hits there's going to be total lawlessness. The only person you're going to be able to rely on to protect you is you. Get a rifle you can rely on. |

I definitely intend to get some seeds to add to my long-term supplies. Things that are easy to grow, like tomato plants, carrots, etc. Maybe some herbs as well.

I initially thought I had plenty, but I really think 2 months top. I have a vegi garden but not counting that cause anything could wipe that out. But it would be a long term source of fresh food.

I have seeds and some tomatoe plants I bought yesterday. SOmeone here at the forum advised me to buy a mesh and cover the garden against bird poop, I thought it was a great idea, therefore the vegetables are not exposed to birds and their droppings. I also intend to plant vegetables thatt grow underground; potatoes, sweet potatoes, It gives the feeling they are protected, I might be wrong but I will give it a try.

Do you live in the country with few neighbors? If not, your garden may not last very long if you have hungry neighbors. Just a thought...

Potatoes are a good source of food. They will keep in the ground long term, depending where ya live. Good long term storage in colder areas and having a basement even better. Here in Texas, no basement, but I do know how to can and dehydrate Sniffles, not sure if your asking me, but yes, I live in the woods. I have several garden spots, one for maters, one for vines, one for roots, etc I have thick woods, can hide lots of vegetation. The racoons, rabbits, fox, squirrel, feral cats and opossum are my biggest threat, LOL

We are now probably up to three months or so of food. I haven't even began to store feed for the animals or anything besides food and water for us. I do have three months worth of TP stored up. I really need to store up bleach and other items. I keep plugging away at it. We only have one income and it seems that I am stealing money from the bill money at times to buy more food. I'll deal with the bill collectors later. Gotta have food to survive.

Reference: Oil % Fats The processed food industry is dedicated to selling you as little food as they can get away with. They make up the difference with sugar, fat and cheap bulking agents. If you move from processed food to prep food you will almost certainly find that your fat intake will fall far below that which is recommended. Cooking oils, olive oil, lard and butter ghee can all be mixed with rice, pasta and even bread in order to replace this lost fat. Note that butter ghee comes in cans and can be kept almost indefinitely, even after the can has been opened. Fats are the cheapest form of calory intake and could make the difference during a long seige. |

I was reading up on Tamiflu and it is very promising. The only thing is -is that pregnant women cannot take it. I beleive it causes bithdefects and babies being born stillborn.

Personally, I think it will come down in some cases to having to decide the benefits and risks of taking the medications based upon the severity of illness in the pregnant woman. On any given day, they wouldn't recommend it to pregnant women due to fear of lawsuit. But in the event of AI, if mother is going to likely die without it AND it is plentiful, I think they would leave the choice up to her or her significant other if she couldn't make that decision.
May be wrong about this but that is what my experience tells me they would consider.

I'm stocked completely for about 45 days excepting long term lighting, and a secondary cooking source outside of 2 grills and 100 lbs of charcoal. I purchased a table top grill that uses only 8-12 lumps of charcoal, though, and stays extremley hout for up to 4 hours.
I now only need to add to the quantities on hand. As to nuts, I purchase those on sale in vacuum sealed containers and toss in the freezer. Canned or jarred nuts cost more, but have a longer shelf life than bulk.
Now to work on a secondary cook source, fuel, more masks (only have 20), crank radio, manual/analog clock, solar panel to recharge batteries, inverter, more bleech, several covered trash cans, more water, and up my food suppy.

Drizztcat,
You can do this! I'm a single mom supporting TWO kids, including a teenage son on child support by choice. I also home school.
Please, do NOT look at your glass as half empty. I have a budget of $400 per month for current AND sotckpiling needs. That money covers food, cleaning supplies, purchasing equipment, etc.
I'm not trying to advertise on this board, but if you go to http://thegrocerygame.com and put in zipcoase to see if availble in your area, you'll be able to INCREASE your buying power for food, paper products, personal hygiene items for the whole family, over the counter meds, cleaning supplies, pull ups, wipes, whatever you can buy at Walgreens, CVS, and your local grocery store.
Initially, you will spend the same, however, the amount your put in the cabinets will double or triple.
After 4 weeks playing The grocery Game, I am stockpiled for almost 2 months. That included purchasing food & items for current consumption.
I purchased Skippy natural peanut butter for .45 cents PER JAR, picked up 12 containers of FREE Quaker Oatmeal.
The catch, yes, there is a catch--isn't it always.
The Trial Month costs $1.00 and you may choose as many stores as available in your area. After the trial period, the first store list is $1.25 per week, each additional list is .65 per week. Plus you need to find coupon inserts. I buy 3 papers at a reduced price, get one delivered free, and trade the extra papers for more coupon inserts at a newpaper recycling bin. I take about 3-5 inches of inserts, and put in about a foot of newsprint each week.
I save over 60% off retail on average off all my purchases with littel effort.
For us who are prepping and not at the year mark, I honestly think The Grocery Game is a wise investment until stocked for a minimum of 6 months. I actually found out about the Avian Flu Talk site from the message boards at Grocery Game. IT is NOT a gimmick!
Think about what you can purchase with the money you save on food!
I purchased masks, a table top grill, tons of batteries, a couple of lanterns, and so much more in just the past 3 weeks.
For those without a list store in your area, there is a field guide that teaches you how to use coupons to increase your buying power.
I thought as Drizztcat until February 19, 2006.
Side note: Drizztcat, do you read RA. Salvatore books? Just curious based on your screen name.
Peace,
Carmen

I checked 6 months, but some things will last much longer. If this lasts 18 months, 6 months is only a third of the time. I believe some people might be under estimating their water needs. I use a rule of thumb of 1-55 gallon drum per person per month. Drinking, washing clothes, dishes, and washing self (sink baths) we even use water for some of our foods. We use a lot of water when you take everything into account. I nearly forgot washing your hands more often.

How have you figured how long your supplies will last.
Mainly Protein, Carbohydrates, and water.
A lot of the protein will be beans but not all, like the cowboys did.
Carbohydrates, rice, instant potatoes, Pasta.
Water 6-55 gallon drums (1 per month)
I have a lot of other stuff canned ham, corn meal, oat meal, veg, canned gravy, stews, soups & crackers, chili, pancake mix & syrup, dryed milk, coffee,a lot of paper products, soap products, but I consider those three things a "must have" to estimate time.
When it came to lunches I tried to pick something like chili with beans, and bean and bacon soup. Beans are protein and your body will use protein as protein or it will break protein down for energy. I know it's beans again but I do have other stuff and there are different ways to have beans
