Studies say Atlantic Ocean's circulation slowing dramatically, increasing climate change fears

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/science/ct-ocean-circulation-climate-change-20180411-story.html

The Atlantic Ocean circulation that carries warmth into the Northern Hemisphere's high latitudes is slowing down because of climate change, a team of scientists asserted Wednesday, suggesting one of the most feared consequences is already coming to pass.

The Atlantic meridional overturning circulation has declined in strength by 15 percent since the mid-20th century to a "new record low," the scientists conclude in a peer-reviewed study published in the journal Nature.

Historic rain inundates Kauai, cutting off Hawaii residents and tourists with floods and mudslides– “This has been the worst flood event I’ve ever seen my 49 years here on Hanalei”

http://www.desdemonadespair.net/2018/04/historic-rain-inundates-kauai-cutting.html

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, the rain gauge in the town of Hanalei collected 27.52 inches of rain from early Saturday morning into Sunday morning. That beats all previous one- and two-day rainfall maximums for that location.

In2thinair on coming hurricanes-also a link to NASA with news of a subtropicol storm not far from Chili-very unusual (DJ-may indicate some ingridients for storm-formation did change-lower temperature but more moisture still can create a strong storm). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Npsd531-piQ and https://pmm.nasa.gov/extreme-weather/rare-subtropical-storm-forms-coast-chile

Global warming

DJ-Less ice is more warming, less land-ice is rising underlying layers is increase of seismic activity. Volcanism effects climate change. Volcanic (Sulphur) clouds can block sunlight, but soot/ash on snow/ice can warm things up-less sun-energy-reflection. Under Antarctica there are several volcano's. When they erupt it could cause high-speed melting/break-up of ice.

Ours is the warmest on record too.  Our weather forecast folk admit that, but I still think they are downplaying it.

Here in misty, cold NE Sotland we have had a consistent heatwave all month.  I don't believe what the max/min thermometer is saying!!  Climates do not change by over 20* in one single year!

Our usual persistent torrential rain at this time of year has completely failed to appear - not one drop.  I am storing drinking water in case my well runs dry.  The water table is way down.  it was just 1 foot below the surface last year.  A 15 foot deep exploratory hole has remained dry as a bone.  My well is only about 18-20ft deep.  I may have to dig a new deeper one.

On the plus side, the midges are nowhere to be seen, as they need at least thick dew to reproduce and we all managed to remove more than one layer of clothing.  Hubby even has a nice tan.
Absence of proof is not proof of absence.

Via google translate-somehow this pressrelease is not avalable in English (from https://www.knmi.nl/over-het-knmi/nieuws/warmste-mei-in-drie-eeuwen-in-zonnige-lente )

May was the warmest month of May in three centuries. In the current climate, a comparable extremely warm month of May occurs once every 60 years.

A total of 13 summer days (25.0 ° C or higher) were measured. This is the highest number since 1901. The average temperature in De Bilt was 16.4 ° C, the long-term average is 13.1 ° C.

De Bilt had its first tropical day of 2018 on May 29th

The month started cool, but quickly became hot in the summer. The last days of the month it was sweltering and in the nights it was not cooler than 18 degrees. De Bilt had its first tropical day of 2018 (30.0 ° C or higher) on May 29th. The highest temperature 31.9 ° C was measured that day in Lelystad. The measurements in Lelystad are currently being influenced by large-scale construction work at the airport, where the measuring station is located. The sunniest was in the northern coastal area with 326 hours of sun on Terschelling. The sun shone the least in Zeeland with about 260 hours. This is special because in May, as in the rest of the coast, it is generally sunnier than inland. On average, there was less rainfall in the Netherlands than normal. Due to the often diffuse character of the precipitation, the regional differences were large. In the wettest places about 100 millimeters fell, on Terschelling only 15 millimeters. A large part of the monthly amount of precipitation fell during heavy thunderstorms in the last week. Due to thunderstorms, KNMI issued code orange three times: on May 27 for Limburg, on May 29 for almost the entire country and on May 31 for the northern half.

Gentle and very sunny spring
The spring of 2018 comes at a (shared) third place of softest springs since 1901. The season was also very sunny.

The average temperature in De Bilt was 11.0 ° C one and a half degrees above the long-term average of 9.5 ° C. March was cold, April very mild and may be the warmest month of May in three centuries. The lowest temperature was reached on the first day of spring in New Beerta: -9.6 ° C. Easter Sunday, April 1st, was at a grade of 7 cool, even colder than the last Christmas day. Then followed a long period with mild to very mild weather. The first summer day (25.0 ° C or higher) was on April 19. Normally there are no summer days in April, now there were three.

This spring the normal amount of precipitation fell and it was very sunny

This spring the normal amount of precipitation fell. Wilhelminadorp was the wettest KNMI station with approximately 273 millimeters. The least rain fell in Hupsel: 116 millimeters. This season was very sunny. The sunniest was on the north coast with on Terschelling 682 hours of sunshine. In the southwest the sun shone the least, in Westdorpe there were 534 hours of sunshine.

Finland had similar weather...and also the forests broke all records for dryness as well.

On language difference, I see the Dutch use "summer days" for 25 C or over. Over here the 25 C barrier is recorded,  but it is called "High Summer"  [implies that some of the summer days can be quite cold -- the last few nights we have had warnings for 'nigh frost'!]

https://www.meteoalarm.eu/ I noticed for Scandinavia and Baltics a large fire hazard. The "astronomical" summer still has to start-and North America did see several wildfires already-not looking good !

Defenitions of Heatwaves also differ by country. Here in the Netherlands you need 5 days +25c of wich 3 + 30C (and to have a "national heatwave" De Bilt-near Utrecht-has to have those temperatures).

Extreme weather is getting "normal", (Ant)Arctic melt must be extreme.....methane and CO2 go over the top with several Arctic Earthquakes per month-a dark doom scenario.

Blighty gets excited by any temperature over 25*C and Scotland any temperature over 20*C.  Blighty panics when it goes over 30*C and Scotland the same for 25*

The temperatures all rose over those points during May but the really strange bit is that they stayed over 20*C in Scotland and over 25*C in most of England.  Stranger still, the weather forecasters/reporters did not admit how hot things got up here.  Being in the coldest part of Scotland and up a hill to boot,  Our farm rarely reaches double figures.  We have been greatly relieved when the temperature dropped back into the 20s.  I still do not believe the temperature I saw on our max/min thermometer.  It was left in the sun and recorded temperatures over 40*C.  I knew it was excepyionally hot, but I still think the thermometer is broken.

https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/6/13/1771682/-New-studies-point-to-climate-change-s-affects-on-global-corn-crops-and-vegetables-and-it-s-bad

This study is obviously alarming, but in tandem with another new study analyzing the very similar effects climate change might have on vegetables, it is breathtaking. Other studies have supported the hope that increased carbon dioxide might boost vegetable and legume yields. But this new study explains that those wins will be greatly offset by the effects that decreased ozone and water scarcity would have in the same scenario. According to Inside Climate News, the decrease in these non-staple harvests could be as severe as 35 percent.

Antarctic sealevelrise contribution went from 0.02mm to 0.06mm in 5 years-another 5 years will be 0.18mm, by 2028 0.54mm-per year ! In 2033 1,62mm per year-and that would be Antarctic-under "present conditions"-so excluding all other causes for sealevelrise (Greenland melt, water expanding due to warming, land moving up when there is less ice on it-Greenland has a 3km thick layer of ice-pressing Greenland down 1 kilometer-land coming up means water coming down....)

DJ-There is also an increase in both eartquakes in the Arctic and volcanic activity, storms. Earthquakes may speed up further collapse of (sea and land) ice-chunks of ice may break off, tsunami's over sea-ice erode the ice, also strong winds erode the ice and blowes snow into the ocean-before it can become ice. Draughts can mean that there is no snow falling-also that snow can not form a new layer of ice. https://www.facebook.com/JoseBarbaNueva Has been following methane (a.o.)-not included in IPCC models-exploding-for the moment in levels (parts per billion)-but it also can explode, it is an explosive gas...in the short term 100x+ a heat trap than CO2. Most of the increase in warmth-93%-went into the ocean-there are limits-also the ocean is giving that warmth to the atmosphere.
(A reminder the amount of energy needed to melt ice is enough to also increase temperature to 80C-the less ice, the faster the temperature increases-no loss of energy !)

Persistent cyclones churning up Arctic sea-ice are bad news. Maximum Arctic sea-ice savagery occurred in 2012 from a massive long-lived August cyclone leading to the outstanding record September sea-ice minimum. We just had a big one in early June. There is almost no thicker multi-year ice left in the Arctic; what is left is thin, brittle, slushy, darker, and honeycombed with saline pockets like Swiss cheese. It won’t be around much longer; it is headed to oblivion. Russia and the USA seem happy with this. Little do they know.
