H1N1 influenza the cause of Indiana prison outbreak, death Posted by Robert Herriman on January 26, 2016 // Leave Your Comment Officials with the Indiana Department of Corrections say the outbreak that sickened several inmates at the Putnamville Correctional Facility, killing one, was due to H1N1 influenza, according to Chief Medical Officer Michael Mitcheff today. tweetThe one fatality, a 35-year-old Mexican national incarcerated for the past seven months, also had a Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection. About three dozen inmates developed flu-like symptoms, with about half requiring hospitalization. The source of the outbreak is unknown, and will likely remain unknown, Mitcheff said. The source could be anyone who carried the virus in during the last week or so, and that person may not have displayed any symptoms.
