H7N9: China reports new cases in Shandong and Jiangxi Posted by Staff on January 18, 2015 // Leave Your Comment The Hong Kong Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) is closely monitoring two additional human cases of avian influenza A(H7N9) in Shandong and Jiangxi. According to the latest reports of the Mainland health authorities, the patient in Shandong is a 60-year-old man who worked in Jiangsu before onset of illness, while the patient in Jiangxi is a 34-year-old man who was hospitalized for treatment in critical condition. To date, 480 human cases of avian influenza A(H7N9) have been reported by the Mainland health authorities, respectively in Zhejiang (145 cases), Guangdong (121 cases), Jiangsu (63 cases), Shanghai (42 cases), Fujian (28 cases), Hunan (24 cases), Anhui (17 cases), Xinjiang (nine cases), Jiangxi (nine cases), Shandong (six cases), Beijing (five cases), Henan (four cases), Guangxi (three cases), Jilin (two cases), Guizhou (one case) and Hebei (one case). Thanks for staying on top of this, arirish.
The media has become pretty complacent about H7N9 now that it's in it's second flu season and not efficiently H2H, but let's not forget that we're talking about an avian virus that has managed to mutate sufficiently in a short time to sicken hundreds and kill with a high enough CFR to be able take the legs out from under modern society if it went pandemic. I think this warrants far more attention than Ebola and MERS. And given the time frame of the two viruses, I think it's probably a greater pandemic threat than H5N1 right now (but what do I know...). |

It's my pleasure JD! I agree with you about the media! All they care about is headlines and sales. Not long ago it was H5N1, then it was MERS, then H7N1, H1N1 and now Ebola and H3N2 making headlines. All of these have been around long enough that they don't really scare me but I watch and wait knowing we are one drift, one re-assortment or mutation away from 1918! When it comes I'm sure we'll all read about it first here at AFT!
