Alumuin garbage cans....make sure the lid is properly sealed rodents cannot chew through it and when emptied can be re-used to collect rain water...I would not store moth balls in with dry dog food..try cedar chips... |

I am really surprised at how little activity (posting) there is on this thread.
Is this possibly an indication of how many people are taking this as seriously as we are? I would think that things would begin to heat up and that there would be many more questions concerning "prep".
Any comments??

I have not bought any of the dried foods yet, but I am considering do
so very soon. I was going to buy the dried eggs and a few
other things. I was wondering if anyone has tasted these foods
yet?? Do you they taste good?? I have never tried anything like
that, so I have no idea.
Please post any comments and any recommendations about what is you think tastes good (or might taste good). I have some very picky eaters in my family, and although I know that if someone is hungry enough, they will eat anthing, I would like to try to purchase as much food that tastes good and is edible. Thanks!!! |

Hello Everyone!!! Regarding the dried foods, what type of dried meats are you all purchasing? I would really like to know about the dried eggs and if they taste ok also. I have hopefully 3 months of stock now and am getting more each day. I also have a lot of food in my cubboard. I'm lean on the flour, cornmeal, salt and sugar. I'm not much of a cook when it comes to stuff like that. I'm really concentrating on the canned and now the dried stuff. I have one 10-day TamiFlu and am picking up one more tomorrow. I have tried to get 3 out of my doctor but I think that 2 is all she will do. She really hesitated about the 2 as it was. I have 3 in my immediate family but will have lots more when the XXXX hits the fan. Anyone else get their TamiFlu? Also, thanks for all the info about the storage tips, they will come in handy. |

Jackson, We have not prepped alot of off the shelf pre made dried type foods or MRE foods either. I think doing so is a good idea though. We have concentrated our supplies around things we normally eat, buying extra amounts of things that our family normally eats that have long shelf life. Example: Kids favorite poptarts & cereals, mac & cheese, canned soups, crackers of all various kinds, general type canned goods (veggies, tuna chicken). We also have purched bulk pinto beans and rice. We buy in bulk at Sams Club and Wal-Mart. Sams in Alabama has 25 lbs of rice less than $5.00 and 25lbs of pintos less than $10.00. Sams is good for boulion cubes, ramen, noodles in general assorted rice/beans and many other bulk items. We have a core group of food that we normally eat, and make purchases in that area. I don't see it mentioned much but grits store along time and is a breakfast food of choice in the south. Having foods that are normal to the family will be a plus - but having other long term foods makes a better prep plan. Alot of off the shelf food at Sams has dates towards the end of 2007 - always look. |

I got my tamiflu today, and my doctor gave me a re fill for one more prescription. I'm not sure i can get it filled right away. Maybe i will wait a week or two and try. My insurance paid for it. I had to pay a $20 co pay. i was very thankful. Would some one mind telling me what it is costing them to prep. I seem to be spending money all the time and using my credit card. I just don't want to think I'm totally wacked by spending all this on prep. So someone please give me some average figures. Thanks

Spoon I am very close behind you in spending. My husband just shakes his head. I prepared for Y2K and nothing happen. I have heard about it every since. I prepared for Katrina and it truely saved the day. I had bought extra gas a generator and everything else i thought we might need. preping for Katrina really saved the day so he is in between with this bird flu prep. But latey i notice he just does what i ask him to do to help out. Which is good. Will you give me an idea of what you have bought.   ;   ;

I got to the "party" late and so have needed to play catchup. I have done nothing the last 4 days except prep. I have also seen the money flow out like a great river. I will continue to shop, but I have managed to get meds, been to the BIG STORE enough times for at least 6 months of supplies, got the camping list from the outdoor store and bought that stuff. And while getting pistol ammo, I learned that the clerk at the outdoor store is a certified gun instructor, so tomorrow I start learning about rifles. I am relieved that I stumbled upon this how-to site and woke up (Oprah helped, too). Prepping is a time-consuming money-draining surreal expenditure of energy, but this is a one shot pony. Money....use your credit cards, borrow it, just get your preps done! GIT ER DONE! The information from this site has allowed me to figure out what I need, and I thank all of you who post survival info. Prepping is achievable - you can do it. Next I need to consider the details of how to be safe from looters.

I have one small deep freezer, and would like to get another one. Do you think it would be a waste of time money and effort to have extra food in the freeer. I know this is not a long term solutions and We have stocked up on can good and dry goods. Do you think the electricity will go off in the very early stages. I could always use the food in the freeer 1st. Any suggestions.

I quit keeping track when I passed $5,000, but I think it's under 9,000. I wiped out our savings account. It just never seems to be done. Always something else to get.

TP storage.... I put some plywood across the rafters in the attic over my garage and have started storing my TP there ... Just remember that it isn't designed to carry alot of weight so don't store your 5000# of canned goods up there (and mice WILL get into foodstuffs stored there). I've been saving empty gallon milk jugs (well rinsed out) up there too and will fill them at a later time if I think it's necessary. I built a really cool haybox out of some scrap plywood and closed cell styrofoam sheets that will keep food in my pressure cooker steaming hot for hours.... I filled it with chili when I took my kids skiing and we ate it for lunch 6 hours after I put it in there and it was still way too hot to eat..... a good way to cook using very little fuel! I'm currently building a solar oven using a 7 sqare foot fresnel lens..... fun project. I'll post how it works out. John.

Hello The power will most definitly go out within a few days of a pandemic. There will not be enough workers to keep it running, and fix normal, everyday grid problems. I am only keeping normal amounts of freezer food in my freezer. If you have too much you will not be able to cook it in time. I've been concetrating on the following items: - instant rice, canned vegies and fruits -canned beef stew, ready to serve soups, beefaroni, ravioli - canned beef, ham, tuna - instant mashed potatoes, and canned potatoes - ready made pudding cups, jello cups, applesauce (kids like them) - instant oatmeal, water only needed pancake mix and syrup - crackers, cookies, dried cereals (mostly for snacks) - popcorn and oil (recently bought a popcorn maker for campfires/fireplaces. $8.99 at Meijer easy snacks)

Me again- remember must have electrolites when sick with the flu. make sure you have gatorade / pedialyte on hand. I also have just recently ordered non food items such as- -portable toilet/ holds 5 gallons of all our yucky stuff I have two children under the age of 6/ must be prepared for everything! -waterless shampoo, premoistened bath wipes, toothettes(premoisted toothbrush-like cleaners for teeth) the bath wipes are larger and are easier to use for bathing than baby wipes. you can get these items from home health supplies stores online. -battery operated tv/radio/siren/lamp. Recently purchased at Target for 39.99 marked down from 59.99. camping supplies are on clearance. - battery operated family size laterns -lots of styrafoam bowls, plates, plastic silverware, cups, trashbags, tp, papertowel, anti-viral kleenx, anti-viral hand santizer/wash/lotion, lysol, and anti-bacterial kitchen cleaner |

Mississippi Mama -- I have tried to avoid adding up what I've spent. I think it's way too much and don't want to know! Let's see, probably $1200 in internet orders. I spent over $700 at Costco the other day. I'm not allowed to go back in. I've also been hitting Target and the grocery stores. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say I have probably spent a total of $5,000 to $6,000. I really, really don't want to add it all up! Yikes and double yikes! (When I went to Target the other day, the check out clerk asked me if I had triplets.....Must have been all the diapers and pull-ups -- sure wish the little bugger would start using the potty!) -- Libby

Marjo,
Thanks for the information.
I think that at the present time I am somewhere around 4+ months.
I continue to add a little everyday. It concerns me that there appears to be a lack of public awarness of how serious this could be and how quickly it could develop. The WHO does not seem to be putting enough press out there for the public to grasp the entire situation. As previously mentioned I no longer discuss it with anyone. Tired of the reactions I get. I am at the point now that I plan to divide my "prep" into several smaller groups placed in different locations. My thoughts are that if something were to happen I would have a back up.

If the rain usually is accompanied with lightening and THUNDER, dogs make the association and KNOW that rain is BAD.
Here in San Diego we almost never see an actual thunder and lightening show with rain fall. (I'm talkin' 'bout a Midwest style rain storm.) |

Spoon how will you store your Dog food? I have three dogs,One beagle name Lap Top Molley another beagle name Jumpin Jack Flash, and a German Sherperd name Nikita Von Nass. Spoon you mention the medicines you have. What is Monolauren and Probenecid?

Hi Mississippi Mama,
I guess Spoon is the best person to answer your question about the exact benefits of Monolauren. From what i've heard about it, it's a safe, natural remedy to help fight colds. I know that I've posted about Probenecid before, but I really do think it's important for people to be aware of the possible benefits of drugs like Probenecid used in combination with Tamiflu (especailly considering that some people may not be able to obtain a sufficient amount of Tamiflu). Probenecid is a prescription medicine that is used to treat gout. It decreases the amount of certain drugs (such as Tamiflu, penicillin, and several others) that are excreted in the kidneys, and as a result, the levels of the drugs will be increased in the body. Make sure you talk to your doctor about this drug, ESP if you are taking other mediciations (i know, for example, that it can increase the levels of methotrexate, a drug used to treat certain cancers and rheutmatic diseases in the body-- and that could be potentially dangerous). However, I think that Probenecid can be valuable to those of use who either can't obtain or can't afford the new recommended dosage of Tamiflu (150mg). I know it was used in the past to increase the level of Penicillins in the body, and it may be of great use to us today in the event of a pandemic. |

Health officials discuss ways to confront a flu pandemic
Palm Beach Post Thursday, February 02, 2006 (excerpt) Mort Laitner asked a room full of public health officials Wednesday who among them trusted the government to protect their family in the case of an avian flu pandemic. "I see no hands in this illustrious room of bureaucrats and first responders," said Laitner, chief legal counsel for Florida's Department of Health. "Most people don't even know what avian flu is," Laitner said. "And what percent of people are going to be prepared? Maybe one percent." Dr. Daniel Lucey, director of a Georgetown University program dedicated to biohazards and infectious disease, said families need to plan for about two months worth of supplies. Lucey also gave a keynote speech. "It takes a long time to make a new vaccine," he said. "And that will be a very serious problem." local_news/epaper/2006/02/02/m1b_tcpandemic_0202.html Edited by Rick |

MM, I purchased my goggles at Professional Equipment and my TVP at BulkFoods. Jackson's correct... I'm hoping to stretch out my Tamiflu in a pinch. Monolaurin is more of an unknown. A close and credible friend of mine swears by this stuff. She uses it yearly to combat flu. Will it work against the great H5N1??? I posted a topic under Medical Intervention/monolaurin? SophiaZoe added some good info. |

Hope I don't catch too much grief over this.......
Everytime you go to one of those fast food places for a order to go they always give you extra staws, K-up, salt etc. Save them in a big jar and they add up. A cheap way to build up some of your "prep"

Started last week with rations and I am already up to several hundred dollars. Don't care how much it cost the supplies will eventually get used if the BF disappears tomorrow. I didn't know where to start so I just started adding additional amounts to my normal shopping list (buy 2 instead of 1). I have a family of 4 with 2 having an alergy to wheat, rye, barley & oats so you can imagine the challenge. I guess rice, beans, canned meats, canned veggies and canned fruit will have to do. I will feel comfortable with 3 months of supplies. I for sure don't have enough TP or chocolate yet.

I actually think things like chocolate and candy will be important
items in a prep kit. Stuff like that is comfort food! Imagine how dull
and boring it would be if you only had a small variety of foods to eat
every day. Jumbo Hershey bars will definately be in my kit!!

If you do only one thing to prepare for a pandemic,
get N -95 Surgical Masks. You can't eat any of the extra provisions you stocked-up on if you are dead. Masks first, food second. This is your first line of defense. The companies that make the masks are running flat out. There is no capacity to make more. Especially in a pandemic. The mask is your first line of defence in light of the questionable ability of Tamiflu, to deal with some mutated Andromeda strain virus - unless you plan to move into a cave. About 80% of medical supplies and drugs are produce offshore. How available do you think these items will be to import, during a world-wide pandemic lasting over a year? Edited by Rick |

Rick, I agree that masks are important, but I think both food and masks
are of equal importance. During a pandemic, food will be just as hard
to find as masks will be. Your masks will be NO good to you if you die
of starvation.

I'm looking at thngs in terms of supply and demand.
First I ask myself, what do I need the most and how quickly will supplies last. Once word spreads & panic sets - in will beyone anything Stephen King could imagine. (I've read most of his stuff). Trust me, I have a difficult time wrapping my head around this. I'm doing this for the people I love. I concluded that the following will be the first to evaporate once WHO increases their Pandemic Alert. These are my immediatae priorties. 1. Masks (N-95) 2.Generatror I had a tough time finding additonal masks and generators. I still have not quit my day job. Next.... 3. Food - I alreay have a full pantry.... additional stores. 4. Medications - prescription drugs. 5. Read this group for information about theraputic agents that dampen the Cytokine storm - the agent of death with H5N today and during the Spanish Flu in 1918. How people are going to last 12 - 18 months without food and supplies, I do not know. Starvation is going to be a very serious problem.

I'm somewhat ready. We have a lot of work to do in the food department though. we currently have about a 2 month supply of food for 2 people.
Aside from food we are stocked up on Tamiflu, Cumcurin, Sarbitol (sp?), every OTC medicine under the sun, gauze, first aid kits, Masks, gloves, googles, some other hopefully good herbal medications, pet supplies, etc. This weekend my project is to stock up on food & water mainly. I have an entire list that needs to be tended to. I still go through times where I feel like I must be going crazy paranoid, but then I remind myself that hey, even if I am going crazy or people think I'm being paranoid, at least I'm prepared. |

Welcome MissRX! I started out with supplies for 90 days but I am thinking I need more now. I did find the "Dollar Tree" store quite helpful though. Everything is $1. They had 80 count baby wipes for $1, 5# bag of white enriched rice, bags of beans, paper products, cleaning products, tools, candles, etc..... It was great and never thought I would spend over $100 at the dollar store....lol.

We had a family meeting and our plan is once H2H is confirmed, everybody has 48 hours to gather their belongings and meet at my mom's house. For what I've bought, I'd say we have a good 2 months for everybody. I'm still working on supplies, but feel like we are running out of time. Everybody is to bring what they have been stockpiling, and each family member is to focus on certain foods. We will be sealing beef jerky, chocolate and mixed nuts this weekend. I found a store, American Foods, that sells huge cans of goods that have been slightly dented for 2.00. Try to find something like that in your area if you are just starting out. I also bought chaffing dish flames as a heating source if we can't leave the house for a few months (to heat food). Found an anti-viral cleaner used in hospitals. I think with one person assgined to clean with that daily, our chances for health will be greater. I've postponed masks, but know I need to get them for when trash, etc needs to be burned, somebody will have to leave the house once a week to do this. our plan is: Frozen foods, canned food, garden foods. With that we should be able to live for over a year. Who says not to plan???? Only the foolish. Also a request for all of us to pray for each other, God's grace will really be our true protection from any and everything out there in that crazy world. You all have helped me prepare, this is where I learned about a Pnumonia vaccine, and even though I don't know any of you, you've helped me immensly. I would appreciate your prayers too, and I'll return the kindness
