here is a intrusion detection device that i recommended to someone awhile back, since i can't get the link to post i will just tell you where to look.

the place is shomer-tec.com, look under intrusion detection in safety and security section of the catalog.

they also have a saracen wheeled apc  for sale.  these are uncomfortable and not very well armored, but better than your minivan.  maybe a group buy?????Wink

plenty of detection devices can be made with that's already at hand. easy stuff made from mouse traps or the old type wooden spring clothespins, wire and batteries.

We live about 1/4 mile off the road. Being from the city I was concerned about intruders. My husband found inexpensive motion detectors and put them up. We love the entrance drive heat sensor detectors. When we are expecting company we open the electric gates. When we hear the first detector we know how much time we have. When the second detector goes off we get up and walk outside to great our guest. We sleep well at night having these little warning devices. Of course the night a deer decided she wanted some berries near the drive work us up with firearms in hand. LOL

Just get a good dog. They seem to have a sixth sense for stuff going on that's not supposed to be.

But they probably bark whenever they see someone, that's enough to wake you upor alert you to someone's presence.

Also the super friendly dogs can be downright ferocious when someone they see as their pack is threatened. I had to arrest a guy once that had the nicest chocolate lab I'd ever seen! He barked, but came up and let me pet him and didn't even know who I was. Then when I grabbed the guy (Who had a domestic violence warrant and was a genuinely not nice person) he started to fight and I had to take him to the ground. The dog went monkey crap and tried to bite all of the officers there.  I figured nice dogs were just that, they're not.

I can't remember how I found shomer- tec but I've bought some items from that site and was pleased with the products that I purchased. There's all kinds of intruder alert systems that you can make yourself. Mouse traps can be a triggering device for a system that uses a shot gun shell with the shot removed. Not only does it alert you but scares the the you know what out of the intruder. I've made and tested a couple of these and found that they work fairly well. We might not be able to rely on a system that operates with electricity. Use your imagination. We might not be able to stop an intruder or a group, but anything to give us some extra time to get a weapon or to escape. and yes a dog is a good dectector. A little dog will do. They eat a lot less than a big dog. They might not be much protection, but if all you need is an alert they'll work just fine. You should understand that if you can hear your dog barking more than likely so can the intruder. so, they will also know that you're probably aware of them . there again , it's half dozen one, six of the other. The element of surprise can be an advantage.

OK.  This is pretty complicated, but you can do it yourself, with a little planning.
You need to save up some tin cans and string, or wire.
Poke holes in the cans, and run the string or wire thru them.
Put a loop in the line, and hang it on the door knob or window latch.
Turn the system off by hanging it on a nail in the wall.
