Hi everyone....forgive for posting on latest news...but seems like we've all been posting non flu news here for a little while anyway.  I really thought we should start paying attenciton to this news story.  I just happened to pick the FOX NEWS version of it by virtue of ease not preference ;-).  I can post other links to the same story.  Anyone have any ideas of what this knucklehead leader is hinting too?  I mean is he going to have a nuke test above ground? below?  Is he going to jack up oil prices?  What kind of **** is he talking about here?  Any takers?  Tip.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says the nation will deliver a harsh blow to the "global arrogance" on this year's anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.

"The Islamic Revolution opened a window to liberty for the human race, which was trapped in the dead ends of materialism," Ahmadinejad said during a cabinet meeting on Sunday.

"If the Islamic Revolution had not occurred, liberalism and Marxism would have crushed all human dignity in their power-seeking and money-grubbing claws. Nothing would have remained of human and spiritual principles," he added.

Ahmadinejad said that in the three decades of its history, the Islamic Revolution had inspired some great developments in the world.

The Iranian president made the remarks as the 31st anniversary of the Islamic Revolution approaches.

Iranians are expected to pour into the streets on February 11 to celebrate the occasion in public rallies across the country, as they have done annually over the past three decades.

He is sure crazier than any other middle east leader so anything is possible. My guess leans towards an announcement that Iran has nuke weapons.

U.S. expanding missile defenses in Gulf
WASHINGTON
Sun Jan 31, 2010 4:50pm EST

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States has expanded land- and sea-based missile defense systems in and around the Gulf to counter what it sees as Iran's growing missile threat, U.S. officials said.

Barack Obama

The deployments include expanded land-based Patriot defensive missile installations in Kuwait, Qatar, UAE and Bahrain, as well as Navy ships with missile defense systems within striking distance in and around the Mediterranean, officials said.

General David Petraeus, who as head of U.S. Central Command is responsible for military operations across the Middle East, said this month that the United States has stationed eight Patriot missile batteries in four Gulf countries, which he did not identify.

The buildup began under the Bush administration, but has expanded under President Barack Obama, who is pushing for a new round of sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program.

Officials said the expansion was meant to increase protection for U.S. forces and key allies in the Gulf.

The chairman of the U.S. military's Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, said last month the Pentagon must have military options ready to counter Iran should Obama call for them.

"The chairman has made it clear many times that he remains concerned about the ballistic missile threat posed by Iran, but it would be inappropriate to discuss any mitigation or defense measures we might have in place to deter/defeat that threat," a spokesman for Mullen said.

Obama announced a revised missile defense system last year that included the deployment of Aegis ships equipped with missile interceptors to help defend Europe and U.S. forces against Iranian rockets.

The Pentagon said it envisioned keeping three ships at any given time in and around the Mediterranean and the North Sea to protect areas of interest, with the possibility of sending additional ships to the region as needed.

The Obama administration said the decision to change plans was based mainly on technological developments and a shift in intelligence assessments to meet short- and medium-range missile threats posed by Iran.

Pentagon officials said deploying ships with SM-3 interceptors, made by Raytheon Co., would provide the flexibility to move U.S. missile defense capabilities as may be needed.

Ships with Aegis interceptor systems are capable of blowing up ballistic missiles above the atmosphere. The system can track over 100 targets, military officials said.

North Korean Arms Shipment Said to Be for Iran
By REUTERS
Published: January 30, 2010

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) — A shipment of weapons from North Korea seized by Thai authorities last month were headed for Iran, according to a confidential report the Thai government sent to a United Nations Security Council committee.

Thai authorities seized more than 35 tons of arms from a plane they said had come from North Korea, and arrested its five crew members after an emergency landing in Bangkok in December.

The report to the Council’s North Korea sanctions committee, seen by Reuters on Saturday, said the shipment included rockets, fuses, rocket launchers and rocket-propelled grenades.

U.S. beefs up defenses near Iran

http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fg-us-iran31-2010jan31,0,6261660.story?track=rss

New antimissile systems are being set up in Persian Gulf countries, including early-warning radar and missile batteries. Washington emphasizes that the measures are intended to be defensive.

Reporting from Washington - The Obama administration has increased the U.S. military presence near Iran and is accelerating installation of antimissile systems in nearby countries, officials said Saturday, as the White House builds pressure for stern new sanctions against Tehran.

New air defense systems are being delivered to Persian Gulf countries, and specially-equipped cruisers -- a linchpin of the U.S. missile defense system -- are being deployed in the waters of the Persian Gulf, the officials said.

The moves are intended to reassure Gulf countries that they would be protected against possible offensive action from Tehran, which is under intensified international pressure to refrain from developing nuclear weapons.

U.S. officials stressed the defensive nature of the actions being taken throughout the region.

The partnership between the U.S. and Gulf countries, described by a senior U.S. official on Saturday, is likely to include early-warning radar systems and missile defenses that will be integrated with U.S. systems, including those on the cruisers and elsewhere.

The initiative involves the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait, four countries with close military ties to the U.S.

"Iran and President [Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad have scared those on the west side of the Gulf right into our arms," said the senior official.

U.S. officials also hope the moves will alleviate concerns about Iran within Israel, which has said it has the right to launch military strikes to prevent Iranian progress toward development of weapons.

The Obama administration has stepped up pressure on Iran to take part in talks aimed at reconciling its civilian nuclear efforts with international concerns that Tehran's true goal is developing nuclear weapons.

A chief mission of top administration officials in recent weeks has been to build international support for intensified economic sanctions. The willingness of the Persian Gulf states to accept additional aid could help signal to countries opposed to the sanctions, such as China, that Iran poses concerns to areas besides the United States, Europe and Israel.

U.S. officials said the expanding partnership between U.S. and Persian Gulf countries is a direct result of the wariness of Gulf leaders concerning Ahmadinejad's intentions and actions in the region.

President Obama took office last year vowing to negotiate with Iran, but hopes for talks faded last fall after a package of proposed accords withered under Iranian inaction.

In meetings last week in London, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton tried to solidify international support for harsher sanctions, and Obama warned in his State of the Union speech that diplomatic overtures to Iran would be combined with "consequences" if Tehran failed to cooperate.

Obama administration officials also have stressed their aversion to U.S. military action, and have taken strides to assure that their actions convey a protective posture.

In a speech to the Institute of the Study of War in Washington on Jan. 22, Army Gen. David H. Petraeus, the head of U.S. Central Command, offered broad details of the expanded U.S.-Gulf partnerships. He said then that the measures were being driven by a fear of Iranian actions in the region.

In the speech, Petraeus said that two Patriot missile batteries had been deployed in each of four different countries, which he did not name, and that Aegis ballistic missile cruisers were now stationed full time in the Gulf.

Early-warning agreements between various countries in the region, Petraeus said, were enabling the U.S. to create a "common operational picture" for the region to counter the Iranian missile threat.

"Iran is clearly seen as a very serious threat by those on the other side of the Gulf front, and indeed, it has been a catalyst for the implementation of the architecture that we envision and have now been trying to implement," Petraeus said.

Developing an integrated warning system across a broad geographic expanse could help U.S. forces to quickly shoot down an Iranian missile.

U.S. officials hope that the expansion of the early-warning system also has the effect of calming Israeli concerns about Iran; they believe a preemptive strike by Israel could provoke a war.

Officials from both the Bush and Obama administrations have told Israeli officials they do not need to launch a strike against Iran.

The Obama White House believes that time remains to continue a diplomatic approach to halt Iranian weapons systems.

In Iran, however, the latest moves are likely to serve as reminders of the 1988 incident in which a U.S. Aegis cruiser shot down a civilian Iranian airliner, killing nearly 300 people.

The antimissile systems probably will mean some additional U.S. troops in the region. Patriot missiles are usually deployed with at least a small contingent of U.S. military personnel.

The presence of additional forces should not be a major issue within the four countries accepting the stepped-up defenses. Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait all host major U.S. bases, and the government of the United Arab Emirates has a long-standing relationship with the American military.

U.S. officials also are working with allies in the Gulf to ensure freedom of navigation in the region. Arab countries worry that during a crisis, Iran could try to prevent their ships from traversing the Strait of Hormuz, cutting off their oil export business.

Obama administration officials also hope to head off an expanded nuclear arms race in the region. If Tehran acquires a nuclear weapon, or is seen as making progress toward acquiring one, wealthy Arab Gulf governments could seek their own weapons, a scenario Washington views as potentially volatile.

He really doesn't say anything other then he loves pushing buttons endangering his country. Maybe he'll reward them by sprinkling unenriched uranium 238 with a little uranium 235 mixed in on his people. This will be his way to celebrate the 31st anniversary and demonstrate that he has the ability to create a dirty bomb.

I hear you Rickster and Techi...I just wish we knew more.  Seems like a lot more as been going on lately...Russian tested their bomb last week right?  We just had a fall out testing a defense shield yesterday i think....now I hear about this biz in Iran and Mr. Big mouth making somekind of threat on the 11th.  I don't know maybe am reading this all wrong.  Something tells me that the fool just might do something that he won't be able to take back and it might involve Israel.  And if it does involve Israel then i guess the **** hits the fan as they say.  Man I hope I am wrong.  Tip

So what more should we be looking for on the world front as a result of this latest Iranian blah blah blah news.  Say our gov knows something and Israel knows something what kind of things would we see happening? Militarily, diplomatically, or etc. speaking?  Do we really think that Israel would wait for the 11th to see what Iran's leaders have planned?  Do they premptive strike?  Does the U.S. send top officials to talk to Israel leaders to calm them down and tell them to wait and see?  ok ok will stop for now.  Too much thinking here. Tip.

I missed anything about a russian nuclear test? Do you have a link?

The world has done something like the equivalent of 29,200 Hiroshima size bombs "above ground" and Russia would have done an underground test. I'm surprised that I missed it if they really did that test.

I do think Israel and Iran are close to war. Israel has from 50-400 nuclear weapons depending on the source. 50-100 is probably more realistic and Iran would be glassed over if Israel was hit by even one of Iran's nuke's if one even exists yet. I just don't see anything good happening to Iran unless they lay off their constant threats of war.
