Is ILI that useful in current Flu reports?

It would seem that the health care system is fond of boxes and ones which are not specific can be easier  than testing for the actual subtype. So, we see ILI (Influenza-like illness) being referred to in many news releases. Also, ARI (Acute Respiratory Infection) and  flu-like syndrome/symptoms are used  frequently. These terms do not tell us what THE Flu is for this season; it may often represent the greatest percentage of test results.

These data are transmitted once a week via the Internet or fax to a 
central data repository at CDC. Most providers report that it takes them
 fewer than 30 minutes a week to compile and report their data.

	And why are States only required to report pediatric deaths? Wouldn't more data be useful. It's easier and cheaper to guess how many people died in 2009 than to actually do the testing?
