What about the #1, 2 or 3spent fuel pool, which each contained over 1,000 assemblies, thecommon spent fuel pool which had 6,000 assemblies and of course units5 and 6 which had core assemblies and spent fuel as well. It's apretty good bet that at least some of that has melted as well."

80%of Fukushima radiation released went over the ocean, and 20% wasdeposited on land inside Japan, out of that total. "Dr. MichioKaku, a world renowned CUNY theoretical physicist pointed out on CNNMarch 18, 2011, Chernobyl involved one reactor and only 57.6 Tons ofthe reactor core that went into the atmosphere. In dramatic contrast,the Fukushima Daiichi disaster immediately involved six reactors andan IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency, a UN Agency) documented2,800 Tons of highly radioactive reactor cores.

The onlyquestion is, how much of this 2,800 tons of radioactive materialended up going into the air and ocean? If Chernobyl released 57 tons,then wouldn't you agree that the 3 to 5 melted down and out reactorswould release at least 3 times more than Chernobyl? Now add the spentfuel pools and it starts looking really, really bad.

As oneadds on the multiple orders of magnitude more tons of spent nuclearfuel in the spent fuel pools, it makes Fukushima much worse thananything humanity has seen before. Let's look at this disaster in away that the nuclear industry does not like to bring attention to,shall we? This evidence is directly from the scientific studies thatthe pro nuclear scientists are putting out.....

Via james MarkAnthony Taylor "Each one of units 1, 2, and 3 had approximately500 fuel assemblies in them. (unit 1 was a little less than 500, 2,3, and 4 all hold 548 if my memory is correct. Unit 4 had beenunloaded at the time of the accident) Each fuel assembly is a matrixof 12 foot long fuel rods, I think 10 x10 rods and weighsapproximately a ton, about half being the heavy fuel encased inzirconium shells. 

So, somewhere around 750 tons (500assemblies x 3 reactors x 1 ton x 1/2 nuke fuel) of fuel was lost tothe environment when the cores of 1, 2, and 3 exploded or melted out.Probably another 250 tons was lost when whatever burned and explodedout of the #4 equipment pool. That get's you to my 2,000,000+ poundsnumber. We also know that at least some of the fuel in the spent fuelpools has melted down - as underwater camera views have shown someburned assemblies in the #4 pool. Is there any evidence that amassive amount of radiation came out of Fukushima?

Itcould be that Fukushima was not responsible for this total peakreading, but rather, multiple other nuclear reactors in Japan alsomelted down and caused this high peak reading, so it is really areflection of the total coverup of the scale and scope of this meganuclear disaster and the lack of true, meaningful information comingout of Japan. But this one comparison serves to accurately frame howreally bad the 3/11 mega nuclear disaster really was.


According to a Japan Nuclear Agency, 14reactors at 4 sites were affected by the earthquake. FukushimaDaiichi was NOT the only one that leaked radioactive substances.Daichi also released massive amounts of radiation, but that has beeneffectively covered up. Many nuclear plants were negatively affected,such as Daini, Onagawa, and Tokai. How much damage did they sustain,and how much radiation did they release? The pro nuclear 'experts'will not go here. They will not even discuss or acknowledge thissimple, basic fact.

Asimple calculation will explain the huge story that is behind thenuclear industry radioactive glowing wall of secrecy. Just onenuclear or hydrogen bomb open air explosion releases about 2-10pounds of highly dangerous, life and health destroying radioactivesubstances that circulate around the globe for tens of thousands ofyears.

Upto the point where people became outraged enough to ban open airtesting of nuclear weapons, due to the catastrophic rise in geneticdiseases, cancers and birth defects all around the world, over 2,400nuclear bombs had been set off. How much in total pounds ofradioactive elements was released into the world 'backgroundradiation' pool due to all of this 'testing'? 

There are 2,000pounds in a ton. Let's multiply 2,400 nuclear bombs X a veryconservative 3 pounds each = 7,200 pounds of 1,200 man made longlived radioactive and life destroying substances released in total tothe globe. But using a figure of 10 pounds per bomb, the total risesto 24,000 pounds. Dividing 7,200 by 2,000 pounds tells us thatbetween 3.6 to 11 tons of plutonium, uranium and other radioactiveelements were released by all of these nuclear bombs.

Thesebombs were spread out over a span of several generations, so theradiation dose was diluted by both time and distance across theworld. Is it any wonder that the raising the background radiationglobally by a huge amount. 

Background Radiation Has Increased600 Percent - 1 mSv In 1950 To over 6 mSv In 2014; Where Is ThisComingFrom?

The3 - 10 tons of 1,200 or so man made radioactive elements from the2,400 open air nuclear tests can still be measured all around theworld in the soil, air, and oceans. These poisonous elements areconstantly and forever being concentrated as they travel up the foodchain to people, who are at the top of the food pyramid. Theseradioactive elements will continue to do this for millions of years,until all of these 1,200 plus man made radioactive elements totallydecay away. 

Radioactive strontium can still be easilymeasured in the bones and teeth of everyone alive today, with theproper testing equipment. Measuring the radiation in baby teeth isone way of measuring the body burden of strontium in the body forexample. 

These 2,400 nuclear tests were enough to cause aHUGE rise in deaths, diseases and genetic problems, which has largelybeen covered up and denied by both the nuclear and the medicalindustry. The medical industry is constantly clamoring for more moneyto 'study' the problem of what causes cancer. They have no clue whatcauses all of these cancers, supposedly, but they are absolutely surethat all of the rise in cancers and all of the other diseases hasNOTHING to do with the tons and tons of radioactive elements releasedinto the environment globally. Did you think that doctors were moreintelligent than you? It might be time for your to change your mind.We still have not talked about the releases of radiation from nuclearpower plants, nuclear accidents and releases from mines, reproccesingfacilities and more. 

A full scale nuclear war TODAY, wouldmean around 10,000 nuclear bombs set off globally, resulting in alife extinction event, with practically NO HUMAN life possible afterthat. A full scale nuclear war would release not only the radiationin those bombs; it would also cause the meltdown and release of allradiation in spent fuel pools and nuclear power plants globally, andthere are over 400 of those, containing hundreds if not thousands ofTONS of radioactive elements. Of course the pro nuclear folks believehumans can live through a nuclear war and survive with no problemafter that, since radiation is so safe and harmless. 

However,just ONE nuclear power plant accident involving a naked and exposedspent fuel pool can release this same amount of radiation and do theexact same thing as a global nuclear war, or worse. The melt down andmelt out of just one nuclear plants and it's spent fuel pool wouldmean approximately 100 tons total of highly radioactive materialwould be released from the reactor core, and another 1,00 tons couldbe released from the spent fuel pool.

Essentially, releasing1,4000 TONS of highly radioactive nuclear material into the air meansthat all life could be extinguished on Earth. Remember that 2,400nuclear bombs only released 3 to 10 tons of radioactive elements intothe Earth since the 1940's. Now try to imagine what happens whenmultiple reactors and spent fuel pools all melt down and out at thesame time, as was the case at Fukushima. 

Numerous nuclearaccidents have happened many times since the beginning of the atomicage. Most of these accident s were either completely or mostlycovered up and were not even reported, until OTHER COUNTRIESexperienced the leaking radiation. For example, other countriesforced the Soviets to disclose the Chernobyl accident, and then theSoviets under Gorbachev were forced to take action and evacuatepeople, many days later, after everyone had been exposed to the worstradiation that comes out initially. This same pattern of denial,refusal to help people, and a cover up of what happened is the 'rule'for every nuclear disaster, not the exception. Most pro nuclearapologists will only admit to 3 nuclear plant meltdowns, but thetruth is that 10 times are documented, and this is just a drop in thebucket, because most of these nuclear accidents are treated as statesecrets, never to be disclosed.

AtChernobyl, approximately 1 million people were pressed into serviceto to try and keep the melted corium from reaching groundwater, andthis effort was successful. Chernobylonly had ONE reactor blow up with a steam explosion. Shortly afterthat a hydrogen gas fueled explosion happened, followed by an out ofcontrol nuclear fire composed of burning graphite, uranium and otherradioactive elements. This fire burned for many days, as the Sovietgovernment tried to put it out by dumping millions of pounds of sand,boron, and lead via helicopter on the burning corium. The corium thatwas not ejected out of the core with the 2 explosions heated up toover 4,500 degrees Fahrenheit. The fuel rods melted down and out ofthe reactor container, flowing down like lava into the basementsunder the reactor itself, where they can still be seentoday.

Compared to Chernobyl, Fukushima had at least 3 andpossibly 5 nuclear reactors that melted down, melted through and outand had buildings that literally blew up. Numerous buildings blew upand and numerous spent fuel pools melted down, caught on fire, and #3experienced a non hydrogen nuclear explosion, (or as the experts callit, a 'prompt criticality'). AGRP will call this a nuclear explosion,because it ejected the contents of whatever it was that blew up outinto the air, and spread fuel fragments for mile around. Theradioactive plume then went down over Tokyo and then around theworld. Yes, #3 was not an atomic bomb, but the result of what cameout of just #3 is actually much worse by many orders of magnitude,than any nuclear bomb would have been. 

As the FukushimaDaichi reactors and spent fuel pools melted down and/or burned, theyreleased massive amounts of radioactive material that turned intoinvisible gases such as Iodine and Xenon, which then went around theworld.

Yet, little or none of this is even admitted, much lessbeing reported by the official pro nuclear 'experts' because theirpaycheck and position in the industry depends on them not disclosingthis. Anyone not toeing the line and finding that Fukushima was morethan 10% of Chernobyl, loses their source of funding, their jobpotential in the industry or they are fired.

The money chokehold in the nuclear industry controls the 'acceptable' results inscientific research and what is reported officially through bothnational and international nuclear 'agencies', such as the IAEA, WHO,UNSCEAR and NRC, just to name a few. Themoney choke hold is why almost all nuclear 'experts' will keep sayingthat Fukushima released no more than 10% of Chernobyl. Why is there still nodefinite answer about the current state of these 14 reactors and 14or more spent fuel pools at all of these nuclear power plants,approximately 3 years (2014) after the mega nuclear disasterhappened?

Where are the coriums that melted out of thebuildings and containments, and what are they doing today? Thenuclear industry does not want to know where they are, so as oftoday, no one knows where the coriums are, and no one cares to know,despite being able to do so within a month or less.

AfterChernobyl, a whole team of nuclear scientists were assigned the taskof finding out what happened to the corium by the then Sovietgovernment. These scientists found the Chernobyl melted out coriumfairly quickly, with many of them sacrificing their lives in theprocess due to the extremely high doses of radiation that theyreceived.

In Japan on the other hand, no one has been assignedthe job, no one is interested, and there is no goal of ever evenfinding out where they are. It is very easy to conclude that there isa huge coverup around the Fukushima mega nuclear accident, because ifit was known what happened here, it would cause all nuclear powerplants to be shut down immediately. Ofcourse, the radiation releases from the melted out coriums continuethrough leaks from the basements of Fukushima. The radiation releasesfrom the Fukushima site is only getting worse over time, and theradiation amounts per liter of water are only going up, from 3/11 topresent day. There is no total amount of radiation released yet,because the Fukushima mega nuclear disaster is not over yet and theout of control release of radiation is still happening from theFukushima plant, with unknown amounts ending up in the ocean. Thereis also the matter of what happened to the nuclear fuel that gotblown out of Fukushima Reactor and/or spent fuel pool #3.

Theradiation from these highly radioactive rod pieces is entering theocean even to this day, polluting and contaminating the oceancurrents going by Fukushima, for potentially millions of years. 

Theauthorities cemented over the underwater part of the man made bayright next to the plant, so this cut down on the amount of radiationreleased from these highly radioactive pieces of fuel rod toxicity.Until the pieces of rods blown out into the ocean beyond the bay areall found, gathered up and properly stored away from all livingthings, they will probably continue to cause problems with oceanradiation for tens of thousands of years, if not millions of yearsinto the future. 

Could these fuel rods be the reason for thehigh radiation readings found by very recent ocean monitoring 20-400miles off the coast of Fukushima?

The rivers all up and downJapan are also adding unknown radioactive amounts to the ocean, asradiation washes down the rivers from the mountains and farms fromall over Japan. The Japanese are also burning radioactive debris allover Japan, and this airborne radiation source also ends up in theocean. Radioactive ashes are dumped into Tokyo Bay, and reports havealso come in about radioactive soil and debris being dumped into therivers. 

Recently, TEPCO got permission to dump radioactivewater into the Pacific, instead of storing it on site. 

Bottomline, groundwater, rivers, bits of spent fuel rods and airborneradiation that ends up in the ocean continues to release massiveamounts of radiation into the Pacific on a constant, never endingbasis.

The Pacific ocean was already dying from globalwarming, acidification, and marine pollution such as plastic andchemicals. This just puts another stress on the ocean, which willcause the death spiral to accelerate even faster and further.

According to one expert who actually included the #3 reactorand spent fuel pool blowing up:” under the Conservative Estimate,and using .89% Plutonium per Table 1, this would be 640 pounds ofPlutonium aerosolized.”

It only takes about 1 - 200 poundsof plutonium dust distributed globally to kill everyone on theplanet, if distributed equally. This very dangerous radioactiveplutonium release has been totally covered up, with very good reason.Of course, this radioactive air release is still going on, despiteclaims of ‘cold shutdown’. If the #3 reactor was used as abreeder reactor, then up to a TON (2,000 pounds) of plutonium mayhave been blown sky high.

Question about totalradiation … at Fukushima

Afterthe tsunami and reactor meltdowns at Fukushima, they ran out of freshcooling water, so they brought in a huge amount of water via a barge,that was then used up, and filled with radioactive waste water comingout of the reactors. The Japanese injected 10-15m³ per hour of freshor sea water at 8 points in 4 reactors plus 4 spent fuel pools. It isnow down the road several years. The total amount of water injectedcalculates out roughly to 300 day`s x 24 hours x 30000- 50000 litersper day. By these calculations, what is the total amount of waterused? 

"The tanks were installed to contain an increasingamount of water with …radioactive substances. About 1,000 tankscontain an estimated 120,000 tons of contaminated water.“

InONE YEAR, TEPCO accumulated 1,000 tanks with 120,000 tons of water.If this keeps on going like this for thirty years, that will mean30,000 tanks... Are they all earthquake proof? How long will theylast? How much radiation is in those? What happens if they leak? Arethey guarded? What happens if a terrorist blows up some of them, or aplane crashes into them?

Sohow much radiation does that calculate out to onsite in these storagetanks, given the above facts?

A worker at Fukushima disclosedthat the tanks were built with no warranty and were designed to lastonly one year. At the one year point, the site contained 1,000 tanks.At the two years point, how many additional 'temporary' tanks wereadded? Two years in, reports come in almost daily about leakingtanks. This problem will get much worse. 

How long can theycontinue to do this? They cannot release any cooling water to theocean, because the reactor cores are all leaking and the coolingwater is coming in direct contact with melted corium, which it is notsupposed to be doing in a normal reactor. 

Everything runningthrough the reactors and/or spent fuel pools is highly radioactive.Plus, all of the Rube Goldberg plastic pipes are leakingcontinuously, and the tanks are leaking as well.

Theysay this will continue for 30-40 years. Our bet is that they will runout of room and money in several years. Realistically, how long canthey continue this process before they are overwhelmed with highlyradioactive water? 

Over 100,000 tons of highly radioactivewater is in the basements of DAINI, which is down the road fromDAICHI about ten miles. Bet you never heard about that either. .

As of 6/2013 the tanks are no longer accumulating water. Newtanks are not being built, where the original projections were thatthey would have to build 1,000 tanks per year to handle the 'leaking'water from the reactors.

The total amount of water on site intanks is decreasing, not accumulating. Despite what TEPCO claims,they are dumping everything into the ocean or evaporating it via thehigh temperature incinerator building, and the clampdown plus secrecyact is preventing any news about this from escaping.

TheTEPCO page above shows a couple of things. First, the reactors areall leaking directly from very 'hot' core material inside thereactors directly into several reactor buildings basements, marked inred (liquid). These reactor buildings are connected via undergroundconnecting pipes, tubes and channels to other buildings on the site,and to the ocean. Since all building foundations are damaged andcracked, this highly radioactive liquid leaks out of these channels,basements, tubes and cracks into the groundwater, which then goes tothe ocean. Of course, TEPCO does not show that part, as that would beconsidered a 'harmful rumor'.

This highly radioactive liquidfrom the building basements is then pumped through a number of otherbuildings, and an evaporation building, and then it is put back intothe reactor within multiple buildings. What happens to all of thewater that leaks out of these buildings, with cracked up basements?That is not shown in the very neat picture above. At the abovewebsite address, the figures also show that the TOTAL amount of wateron site being stored has been dropping over the last three months,maybe much longer. There are no new tanks being build anymore threeyears into this mega disaster. Why not? Nothing has changed as far asthe leaks, the amount of water they are pouring over the brokenreactors and the amount that is leaking out of them. The undergroundcoriums are still there, contaminating all the groundwater they arein contact with.

The leaks from the basements, the leaks fromthe reactors, the leaks from the tanks, all continue on without anyattempt to stop them. The underground coriums continue to interactwith the groundwater, and that highly radioactive water continues toflow into the ocean, non stop. There is no attempt to even find outwhere they are. As of 2014, things are getting much worse and aregoing backward, as far as what is going into the Pacificocean.



UNKNOWN -There are no estimates, no one is studying it, no one is monitoringit. So far, no one seems to care. 

There are two mainconcerns. First, the 3 or more melted100 ton blobs of highlyradioactive corium went out of the 1-3 reactor buildings and they arenow underground, in contact with groundwater.

The Fukushimasite is turning out to be much like Hanford with all of its cover-upsand secret spills, leaks, and underground aquifer contamination.

NO ONE is counting the total of ALL OF THE ABOVE. No one iscounting or tracking ongoing radiation releases. We are NOT countingwhat is in the large radioactive water storage tanks on site. 

NOONE is counting radioactive water that went underground. NO ONE iscounting the radiation released from and still being released intothe air, groundwater and ocean from the two nuclear explosions at #3reactor and spent fuel pool.. Both of these sources of radiationrelease have way more tonnage of highly dangerous Plutonium andUranium MOX fuel. 

MOX fuel is about 1 million times moredangerous than plain old Chernobyl style fuel, and this MOX fuel wentup into the air and down into the ground, where the coriums areleaking their radiation into the ocean, directly.. This FACT is NOTin any calculations or guesses, as far as how much radiation is goinginto the ocean, but the amounts are massive and will go on forever.

This is serious fallout, but is being ignored by Japaneseauthorities, who are looking only at exterior dose rates, and nothingelse. Thereis a very serious radioactive contamination in Tokyo. There was aplace in Tokyo that has higher levels of radiation than in theChernobyl exclusion zone, but Japan is covering this up completely.

AGRP has not seen any counts yet,that total ALL radioactive emissions from FUKU, based on realisticscenarios. NO actual data from monitoring equipment has been releasedyet. 

The dangers from just ONE spent fuel pool at FukushimaDaichi that is in very serious trouble, boggles the mind. If SpentFuel Pool #4 falls over, it will cause a cascade effect that may verywell result in the extinction of all life on the planet. Again, mostmass media news outlets are not covering this danger and Japan'sinaction around it.

Dr. Paolo Scampa Reports That Fukushima Released 3,000 Billion Lethal Doses Of Radiation

“Dr Paolo Scampa, a widely know EU Physicist, single handedly popularized the easily understood Lethal Doses concept. What does the term “Lethal Doses” mean?

From Veterans Today; "Dr. Paolo Scampo has estimated that Fukushima in total has released radiation that equals approximately "three thousand billion (3,000,000,000,000) lethal doses of radiation. This is up from about 70 Billion = 70,000,000,000 Billion Lethal Doses" released as of March 23, 2011. Fukushima continues to leak invisible, deadly, cancer and genetic disease causing radiation. 

As Dr. Michio Kaku, a world renowned CUNY theoretical physicist pointed out on CNN March 18, 2011, Chernobyl involved one reactor and only 57.6 Tons of the reactor core went into the atmosphere. In dramatic contrast, the Fukushima Daiichi disaster immediately involved six reactors and a whopping IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency, a UN Agency) documented 2,800 Tons of highly radioactive old reactor cores." This means Fukushima is approximately 50 times worse than Chernobyl, and this figure makes sense logically as well, considering the amount of fuel on the site.

Fukushima is getting worse since multiple reactor buildings blew up, multiple spent fuel pools caught on fire, melted down and at least two spent fuel pools melted through (#3 and 4). Fukushima continues to leak radiation 24 hours a day into the water, air and ground. Huge single wall temporary metal radiation waste storage tanks are being built on site that house screaming hot nuclear liquid waste, but NONE of these metal tanks are tested as being earthquake proof, much less freeze proof. Many of them are leaking. 

The tanks have no level alarms, no level indicators and no way to check for leaks happening directly underneath them into the soil, through unreinforced concrete foundations built on shifting, unstable soils.... What happens when TEPCO runs out of room for storing this highly radioactive water? What is going to happen to this water when the tanks start rusting through, or the rubber joints deteriorate or leak? 

The Hanford facility in the USA built huge 'temporary' liquid radiation storage tanks as well, but many of those were at least double walled for safety. No such safety standard exists at Fukushima. The Hanford 'temporary' metal tanks are now leaking into the groundwater and the Columbia River. This radiation is added to the radiation coming from old abandoned uranium mines that supplied raw uranium ore to the Hanford facility.

The Fukushima disaster is not over. The corporate owned mass media pays no attention to Fukushima. If it does mention Fukushima, it minimizes and spins the disaster into something that sounds minor and completely done with, using such terms as 'cold shutdown' or 'decommissioning'. The pro nuclear apologists 'estimate' that only 3% of the amount of radioactive Iodine and only 10% of total radiation was released from Fukushima, compared to Chernobyl. This does not make ANY logical sense when one uses basic logic, as outlined by Dr. Kaku above. The best that can be said of these pro nuclear industry sponsored minimizations is 'garbage in = garbage out'.

The government of Japan is asking residents to move back into highly radioactive zones. The Japanese government and TEPCO are bringing in children to play in the highly radioactive zone and promoting the Fukushima province as a 'tourist' destination for exchange students and others, much like Russia is promoting Chernobyl as a 'Garden of Eden'. In the USA, nuclear bomb test pits are also tourist destinations, with the tour operators and promoters denying any harm to tourists from hot particles or from the elevated radiation levels in these areas.

Meanwhile, the mass media TV 'programming' focuses on dancing stars, trials of murderers, divorces and traffic accidents, as well as other minutia designed to distract and entertain sheeple, instead of spending any time on issues such as nuclear power plants and nuclear weapons, which can easily cause a global life extinction event. 

Most people seem to accept corporate mass media 'programming', which can be called the pro corporate 'spin' machine. Most people cannot believe that anything else is possible, even when confronted with facts and proof. The truth sounds much too horrible to even listen to, much less believe. 

With cancer rates and disease rates associated with low level radiation rising constantly all around the world and most specifically in Japan from a still 'hot' Fukushima nuclear disaster of epic scale, what will be the future of humanity and of all other life on the planet, as nuclear accidents keep on happening? 

Professor Takeda says Japan may very well become uninhabitable by March 2015, due to the continuous radiation leaks from Fukushima.

Takeda explains that the annual absorbed radiation dose for Japanese citizens will reach 5mSv per year in 3 years, starting from January, 2012. The 'safe' limit of annual radiation should not exceed 1mSv per year, according to the UN report above. Many Fukushima province residents are getting in excess of 20 to 100mSv per year NOW, and the Japanese government says this is just fine, as outlined in the UN report above.

Dr. Helen Caldicott MD gives her professional medical opinion that the Fukushima nuclear disaster has the potential to make Japan “uninhabitable” as well. But according to the pro nuclear mass media monopoly, everything is just fine and there is nothing to worry about, except for what the stars are wearing, or what local crime is happening. Crimes committed by corporations that kill millions or bankrupt whole nations are ignored, downplayed, minimized, or denied completely.

Dr. Moret said back in 2011 that 1/3 of Japan was uninhabitable, due to radiation levels. The fact that people are living, working, raising food and then exporting it to countries including the USA from these contaminated zones says something about the state of the government and nuclear industry globally. 

So who do you listen to and believe? Ask yourself a question... Is there anything aired on any corporate controlled mass media channel, that is negative to ANY corporate monopoly; coal, oil, diamonds, nuclear, GMO foods, etc? See if you can find ANYTHING that is critical of any corporate monopoly or critical of the capitalist for profit system in general... 

Now compare what you found to the experts above and to the few channels that are hard to find, which are not funded or controlled by corporations, such as Democracy Now, RT News, etc... 

Bottom line, it is up to you to deprogram yourself, or to keep the current TV produced corporate controlled programming (The Matrix) in place. It can be very scary to find out the truth of what is REALLY going on in the world, compared to the faux virtual reality presented by corporate controlled mass media. Which pill will you swallow; the red or blue pill?

Bottom line, due to the long incubation times of cancers initiated by the Fukushima mega nuclear disaster, it may take many years to find out how many of these lethal doses of radiation actually cause deaths. Wouldn't you agree that just the sheer number of fatal doses of radiation chasing everyone is scary enough to shut down the entire nuclear industry? Something that dangerous just should not be given public support in any way, shape or form.

All Radiation Counts reported are partial Counts. Uncounted types of radiation include Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Neutron and X-Ray radiation.  Uncounted radiation, if added, makes the actual Count higher and more dangerous.

The highest radiation reporting city is listed first, the least radioactive city reporting is listed last. Still, all reporting cities are above normal. These are the American cities that exceeded 1,000 CPM this week.

I just could not overlook Washington, DC, at 401 CPM, subtotal Gamma and Beta, for a High Rad reading. This is not even a low for the District. The low Gamma only reading was 0nly 76 CPM.

The benefits of living in Washington, DC are never ending and far surpass those of Normal men and women living in other cities and towns – even New York. NY City recorded a 973 CPM Radioactive High this week.

Highest Recorded Radioactive City in America this week


Colorado Springs wins and is the most radioactive City in the nation this week. There is no prize.

Thirty-one (31) American cities topped 1,000 CPM this week. There were Thirty-one (31) Cities last week, too. There are Thirteen (13) American cities between 900 and 999 CPM. Stay Alert and take all appropriate precautions.The most prevalent isotope, Cesium 137, takes a daunting 600 years to decay to infinitesimal levels and it is not even particularly long-lived radiation. The Cesium will remain for 600 years.

Fresno, California stopped reporting for the time being or permanently in December 2015; it is not clear which. We’ll see what happens. In the meantime as a reminder, Fresno’s Five year Radioactive High was 2,504 CPM.

Five Year Rad Analysis in the US 2010 – 2015


Are the Rad readings getting better or worse? I suppose we all ask ourselves that question from time to time, in one way or another. One good way to formulate an answer for some would be to look at records from Earth’s recent radioactive past and try to glimpse the future. Others would pray for Guidance from Above.

A few determined public and private entities actively collect records, publicly available, about the Radioactive Era we now occupy. If the records are not public, they are no good to me, 24/7/365 access is required. That is easily done with computers; but; computers are also easily tampered with by friend and foe alike.

For those tampered-with Rad Reading I have created and new category of designation: Tampered-with. Enjoy it, if it wasn’t so serious, it would be a real Hoot. Of course, any mention of tampered with Rad readings must start with good ole Washington, DC, our nation’s capital.

Why do they do that for one city and not for all? Other than with an artificial High Pressure area, which can easily be created, it is a mystery to me how they do it. Washington, DC definitely meets the criteria, whatever they maybe, whereas New York City does not. Go Figure that. Honolulu, Hawai’i is another Tampered-with Rad Unit. The Rad Readings shown maybe tampered-with as in pure fiction or actual readings. You research it and decide for yourself.

The rest of the country’s Rad Readings are much like those of Miami, Florida. On December 26, 2010 the High Combined Rad Reading in Miami for that week was 1,118 CPM. Today, for the week of December 26, 2015, five years later, the same Combined High CPM reading is 1,405 CPM. That is a 25.6% increase in 5 years.

There are 31 cities > 1000 CPM right now and 13 between 900 and 999. Not much change. Of course, we’re talking about elements with very non-human type life spans. 90 Billion years compared to 70, is not a joke…..”


Emergency Shutdown of Russian Reactor


Residents of St Petersburg, near Leningrad, in Russia were frightened December 18, 2015 by large quantities of radioactive steam venting from Reactor No 2 at the four reactor complex. The Director of the Nuke Plant said that a “main pipe” had broken in the turbine side of the reactor. This is unconfirmed. Very little else is known about the industrial accident other than one man was hospitalized. It is thought he was a worker at the nuke reactor.

The nuclear plant contains four aging 1,000 MW RBMK style Soviet-era reactors creating about 12,000 MW of Thermal energy or Total Heat. Only about a third is recoverable as electricity. Reactors, in general, are very inefficient sources of electricity, mostly the reactors just warm up the ocean and the air. Great for Plutonium 239 for Bombs; but real poor for electricity.

The No 2 reactor is 40 years old and temporarily shutdown due to the accident. The Unit had an expected lifespan of 30 years 40 years ago. All four reactors are similar to the destroyed No 4 reactor at Chernobyl, Ukraine.

The nuclear plant director was quoted from a press conference he had. A French newspaper and Express in the UK provided sketchy details.  Facts are slowly emerging. The “main pipe” the director spoke of in a nuclear plant could be six feet in diameter.

Baby Pulse Spikes Rad Monitors in US


Three days later, on December 21 EPA Beta and Gamma Rad Monitors registered a sharp peak in the recorded radiation readings in 17 Rad Monitors to date. The radiation Spikes lasted approximately six hours each. The affected cities were: Lincoln, NE; Omaha, NE; Des Moines, IA; Aurora, IL; Madison, WI; Champaign, IL; Chicago, IL; Grand Rapids, MI; Indianapolis, IN; Detroit, MI; Cleveland, OH; Tulsa, OK; Jefferson City, MO and Springfield, MO. The Rad Spikes all were from 250 to 450 CPM points and all sharply upward.


Yuma, Phoenix and Tucson Rad Units Go High, Are Shutdown


Yuma, Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona all saw extended absences in their Rad measurement units this week after Yuma’s nation leading High Rad last week. Seems the New Westerners turn tail and run at the first sign they need to Man Up, or Woman Up, as the case may be. Gender is meaningless here; they deserted.

All the publicly reporting Rad Monitors were Switched Off when called on to perform. Y’know, what the staff gets paid good money to do, keep the machines running. So, who ordered them to shut down? Were the machines lobotomized, too, like in Billings, Montana?

The real question is still the same question as always: Where did the Rad come from – nuke weapons or nuke reactors? Yup, there are only two possible sources for this much Rad: Exploding nuclear weapons or daily venting of nuclear reactors. This is no high school physics lab test gone bad or backyard fission event.

Take your pick; You are damned if you do and damned if you don’t. There are no other big nuclear sources on this planet.

It takes about 40 days for High Rad intermingled with the Jet Stream to come around again and re-hit the States. There is so much Rad high up in the air that this always happens. Closer to home there is Sen John McCain’s Favorite reactor in Phoenix. Getting long-in-the-tooth, it is.

The world’s Nuke Weapons Labs know, of course; exactly where the Rad came from; but, they aren’t talking – not their job. The original sources are still the same, though: weapons or reactors. Take your pick. Don’t dither. The Rad excursion happened Dec 18, 2015. Somewhere another will happen today; and tomorrow, and all our tomorrows forever.

St. Louis and the Rad Problem


St. Louis, now and forever, will be remembered as a Manhattan Project nuclear garbage dump. It was for the most poisonous, flammable elements in the universe that just happen to also be radioactive.

What will happen to the pieces of the rocks that incinerated Hiroshima, Japan and turned former people into mere shadows on the concrete? This is not Nagasaki, which was blown away by Plutonium, manufactured in all reactors.

What is going on at the St. Louis City/Federal Nuclear garbage dump is the two have more or less run together 100 to 200 feet below the ground, thanks to the water in the floodplain. This is out by the Airport in a poor section of town in afloodplain. As garbage dumps frequently do, it caught on fire.

Now that is not very unusual, however hundreds of tons, if not thousands of tons of highly radioactive elements with unpronounceable names like Amercium, the problem of flammable rocks mixed with or next to the garbage dump is not solvable in this lifetime; or ever. There is no fix.

As YRTW readers and commentators have pointed out, this nuke fire in St. Louis could be the result of many different things or nothing at all. That is real “plausible deniability” for you; an old term fired President Nixon popularized. The real criminals are the long dead people who thought of digging a plain hole in the ground for the Uranium bomb making left overs from the Manhattan Project in the first place; and, those workers who buried it many years ago. Their atomic legacy just keeps on killing.

St Louis is certainly not alone in experiencing the reckless disregard for life and health of the powerful federal/private Manhattan Project. The same highly radioactive throw-aways from building the Bomb are used as an under-pavement for roads in Niagara Falls, New York and West Chicago, Illinois. There are no doubt more cities with such a curse from WWII days and the 1950’s.

The St. Louis dump grounds now make up a giant nuclear powered cooking pot because the Uranium brings it’s own heat with it as a free built-in Property. This stuff burns really hot – up to 10,832 D. F. A real devils brew of explosive and poisonous stuff is cooking up in St. Louis.

Worse, it is probably already on fire up to 200 feet below ground. The garbage fire is called a “smouldering fire” and is starved for oxygen. Digging it up is not a good idea since that just exposes the burning garbage fire to more oxygen.

The Uranium products don’t require oxygen to burn. Uranium products can burn without oxygen and underwater – it makes no difference to the uranium. Plus, the fine Uranium particles can catch on fire at room temperature all by themselves. No ignition sources are required. When people use the old expression “It was bound to happen,” this is one of those things.

Now – 70 years later – it is kind of a Perfect Crime. The original Perps are long dead and buried or almost dead. The Feds are using a standard cover story that emphasizes that it was an illegal dumping operation of radioactive waste. Ha! That’s preposterous! The hundreds or thousands of workers, ranging from engineers to laborers digging a huge hole out by the Airport did exactly what they were told to do by the Manhattan Project.

The Feds are just trying to escape liability by these idiotic lies. The Feds broke it; they have to pay to fix the impossible situation the folks are in now – It’s theirs! Now – Not 50 years from now.

Uranium is also chemically active. It can and does provoke the creation of explosive and poisonous gases at the St. Louis Garbage/Nuke Dump that migrate through the upper layers of dirt, garbage and Rad stuff to poison and harm people in St. Louis. That is the natural way of things when substances are exposed to Radiolysis. It is defined by the Free Dictionary as: “Radiolysis – Molecular decomposition of a substance as a result of radiation.” –

My recommendation remains the same for healthy, able-bodied people in St. Louis – Just Leave, get out of town.

A word about Amarillo, Texas. Since we all know what was there, there no need to go into all that. The Rad report from EPA and all the historical Rad records are totally gone, totally blown away. There is nothing left to report the Rad numbers now or in the past; the EPA records vanished overnight. The town is fine, omitting the obvious, as far as I know.

Analysis of Certain Isotopes after Meltdown in 1992


Hold on to your hat. In 1992 Germany calculated that in reactor meltdowns like Fukushima Daiichi the radioactive isotope Strontium 90 would aggressively poison the environment for 109.2 years and then decline slowly over the next 273 years. Of course, we will all be long dead by then. Other deadly Rad isotopes put Strontium 90’s generous life span to shame.

Isotope Count reporting


These CPM numbers do not represent the real radiation counts in your radiation weather for the week. The Rad is actually much higher (worse) than these government certified partial reports say. Use these report numbers as your Starting Pointin adding up your daily, monthly and annual exposure from your Rad Weather.

Most radiation monitors report on the radioactive presence of Cesium 137 and Cesium 134 at the detector. YRTW will report on the secrets the Pros use in estimating the actual Total radiation counts. It is not a pretty picture.

The Lethality from a specific release goes up for 35 years; then the Lethality declines slightly and hangs steady for thousands of years. Regrettably, for all Normal Humans that is many generations. The end result, of course, is extinction of our species and all others on the planet. Everybody is included; no one is left out. I know of no variety of Humans immune to radiation.

Day One out of the reactor use a Cesium 137/134 CPM multiplier of 150 Times to get an approximation of the Total Rad. After 15 days outside the reactor the multiplier is still about 100 times the two similarly named Cesium Isotopes – Cesium 137 and Cesium 134. After 10 years have passed from that release, the Multiplier is Five Times the common published Cesium 137 report.

The Lethality is still increasing though. Yes, the Radiation is going down and the Lethality is going up at the same time for 35 years after a big release. That is a really hard to understand point about Your Rad Weather This Week. Each new major Rad release starts the Cesium countdown clock all over again, too. It gets … complicated with all the overlapping and the daily releases.

Here’s how you can calculate an estimate of your Total Rad today: Use a reported account of your Cesium 137 CPM and Multiply Times 5. Another way to say it is Cs137CPM X 5.0 = Your Total Radiation Estimate. That’s it. No magic. Just the facts as close as you can calculate it. Good Luck.

However, provided Cesium 134 is present you are experiencing a recent radioactive release and all bets are off. Why is that? Because the two Rad Isotopes decay at greatly different rates. The relatively long lived Cs 137 is half gone in 30.1 years. The shorter lived Cesium 134 is half gone in only 2.06 years. In addition, the amount of deadly Plutonium 239 is steadily increasing, even out of the reactor or exploded bomb. As a result the Multiplier changes very rapidly.

Radiation types commonly measured by radiation monitors include Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Neutron and X-Ray radiation. Only Beta and Gamma are reported by the EPA and here on YRTW. The only thing they have in common is that they all kill you. There are also 1,944 more known individual Rad elements, only a few are ever mentioned in articles.

In short, the newer disaster’s Cesium 137/134 immediate radiation readings so conveniently echoed by official news outlets tell you right away by simple Multiplication how big the disaster really is. Think of it as the insider’s secret code. Multiply away!

How often do radioactive releases occur? The answer is: Radioactive releases occur daily in most reactors. This almost daily reactor Venting does complicate your health decisions and your estimated Rad readings. May you always have better Rad Weather; but, that’s not likely.


Isotope detectors


If you have a lot of money you can buy an Isotope detector that will tell you the name of isotopes it is tuned to detect. They are excellent tools for determining specific Rad elements. More power to you if you can afford one, or a group of you can pony up the Bucks to buy one. In this case knowledge is power. That kind of power can only be bought.

Without it, you have what the Pro-Nukers laughingly refer to in our lives as “A shortened life span.” That means the Pro-nukers are joyfully killing people these 70 years now since Hiroshima got Nuked by the United States; and, have no intention of stopping. I mean, after all, they get rich slaughtering us.

I do not know how big Fukushima (and others) realy is. I do not know how much the above claims are correct. 

The picture I do get is that TEPCO has no control over its plants and the Japanese Government does want to control the "flow of information". If the situation is realy as bad cancer-numbers will explode.

The Nuclear Emergency Tracking Center is reporting a "RadCon-5 Alert" for a significant radiation spike in Pittsburgh, PA.  Residents should wear masks to filter their air if going outside.

Under "typical" circumstances, the level of Beta Radiation in and around Pittsburgh is 73 Counts-Per-Minute (CPM) of Beta Particles.  As of 11:41 AM eastern US time today, that level has suddenly spiked to a record high of 356 CPM.  That's almost four times the normal level.

Beta radiation outside is easily avoided by being indoors, with windows closed. 

If traveling outdoors, it cannot hurt to wear an N-95 or N-100 filter mask, to prevent inhalation of particles that may lodge in lungs, burn lung tissue, and raise the possibility of cancer.  Once back indoors, remove clothing and place it directly in the laundry, then shower to wash away any particles that may have gotten onto your body.

A mountain lion with a second set of teeth growing out of its head has been killed in Idaho.  Radiation from the Fukushima nuclear disaster causing mutations in USA!

The big cat was killed by an unidentified hunter last week in Weston, Idaho who then reported the animal's bizarre deformity to the authorities, Idaho State Journal reports.

 Idaho conservation officers, who were sent a photograph of the kill, were shocked to find theyear-old lion had a separate set of teeth growing out the left side of its forehead.  This lion was born several years AFTER Fukushima radiation began arriving in the USA from Japan.

Experts have not been able to agree on the cause of the unusual mutation.

One theory is that the mountain lion's extra set of teeth may be remnants from a conjoined twin which died in the womb.

Another is that it is a type of tumor called a teratoma which can sometimes grow other body parts such as hair, teeth, bones - even eyes.

Regional wildlife biologist Zach Lockyer told Idaho State Journal the unusual deformity had left experts stumped.

- Even before the ban on production and use of chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) aerosols under the 1987 Montreal Protocol, the concentration of these substances was insufficient to destroy the Arctic ozone layer. It is therefore improbable that CFCs could destroy the Arctic ozone in 2011 after decades of environmental regulation.

- On the other hand, decay products of uranium and plutonium, including radioactive isotopes of iodine and xenon, have an enormous capability of destroying ozone. Vast quantities of these ozone-destroyers reached the Arctic region within four days of the 311 meltdowns and for months thereafter, possibly to the present day.

As for the ice melt over Greenland and the Arctic:

- The ice sheets have been thinning over the past decade due to several proposed factors: warming global temperatures, heat-trapping black soot on the ice surface, and a cyclical pattern in the Arctic climate. None of these factors, however, can account for the sudden melt of 2012, the second year of the Fukushima crisis.

- A relatively small amount of radioactive isotopes can have the effect of raising water temperatures, which was confirmed by current Italian studies of the Fukushima meltdown, as reported by NHK World on April 30. An efficient fuel-to-heat ratio is the basis for the use of boiling-water and pressurized-steam nuclear reactors. A tiny quantity of nuclear fuel can generate vast amounts of heat.

- Tritium, radioactive heavy water, is produced inside nuclear reactors in especially high concentration with the use of plutonium-rich mixed-oxide fuel (MOX). Tritium, which has two neutrons in addition to a proton, has similar physical properties as normal H20, including evaporation to form clouds and precipitation in rain. The one major difference is their freezing-melting points. Normal water turns to ice at 0 Celsius. The freezing-melting point of tritium is -252 C. The presence of minute quantities of tritium can therefore destabilize the crystalline structure of ice and prevent normal water from freezing even in the coldest winter temperatures on Earth. (One observation along the Fukushima coast by this writer was that tritium tends to vaporize in a dense fog, providing a clue to spotting tritium in a body of water or slab of ice.)

I continue to be impressed by the width and depth of your knowledge Dutch Josh, my eye was on the usual suspects not tritium, I like the way you think, the quantity of tritium would need to be quite high 1% or so to have appreciable shift on the equilibrium point of the water isotope mixture but we would presumably see a large change in our DNA structure by that time as DNA relies heavily on the properties of H2O for its spiral structure and stability.

Finding myself totally unprepared for the forthcoming BioWars my attention has been focused on survival and gathering equipment and supplies but I realize that long term Fukashima is the second biggest threat to human existence on plant earth.

A spin-off from my current water purification techniques was to attempt to purify water contaminated with radioactive isotopes such as cesium by utilizing chemical membranes, also chemically prevent bio-adsorption of radioactive iodine by lengthening storage time prior to ingestion and use of competitive antagonist techniques upon ingestion which is basically the same idea as radiation tablets, use of cynohexoferrate for cesium & thallium to prevent bio-availablity of those isotopes in the gastrointestinal tract, tritium however is going to take this to a whole new level of complexity, I need to have think about that, many thanks Dutch Josh your help is very much appreciated.

Guests, I put some of what I did find about Fukushima in this space. I do not know if the information is to be trusted. Blind trust is never wise. I must admit that I do not always fully understand what I am posting. But what I do believe that climate change, Japan nuclear disaster(s), etc. deserve much more attention. 

Main-stream-media have become "words between commercials", not to inform but dis-inform the people. Internet can provide some alternatives.

Short-term vision and greed are the main treaths to humanity. If we are in the sixth extincion-wave that should be the "main news", to limit damage as much as possible. 

Fossil-fuel-greed, military-industrial-complex, still control the main media. But all things change in due time....

Fukushima nuclear power plant is still experiencing major contamination issues nearly five years after the earthquake, tsunami, and subsequent meltdown.

A new declassified report from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, written on March 18, 2011 just days after the disaster, sheds light on just how bad it was.

We now know that "100% of the total spent fuel was released to the atmosphere from unit 4."

According to nuclear expert and whistleblower Arnie Gundersen in an interview with WBAI in New York, unit four contained more cesium "than in all 800 nuclear bombs exploded above ground".

Cesium has been linked to thyroid cancer, which is on the increase in the Fukushima area since the tsunami, according to the US National Library of Medicine.

The chemical is highly soluble in water and can find its way into foodstuffs that have been prepared in contaminated areas.

Six days after 3 Reactors at the Fukushima Nuclear Plant in Japan melted down and blew up, the Canadian gov't found radioactive Iodine-129 (129I) in drinking water of British Columbia.  They should have told residents to filter the water and to consume protective pills of Potassium Iodate.  They didn't.  In fact, the deliberately kept the radiation danger secret.


As a result, literally thousands of citizens in British Columbia now face deadly Thyroid cancer; which is 90% Curable in FEMALES, but 90% FATAL in males.

Environment Canada, testing water in British Columbia knew, from prior tests, that the "typical" level of 129I in water was 31 Million atoms per Liter (atoms/L). 

Within 6 days of the FDNA 129I concentrations in Vancouver precipitation increased 5-15 times… sampling of groundwater revealed slight increases in 129I


The results in rain show an increase in 129I concentrations of up to 220 million atoms/Liter… 129I anomalies [in groundwater wells], which occurred exactly when the recharge age predicted they would, suggests that some of the 129I deposited by Fukushima was reaching the wells…

St. Louis, Missouri , radiation @ 64.0 CPM in the snow.

Today's count, taken on 1 inch of fresh fallen snow, returned elevated levels of radiation .. topping out at 64.0 CPM.

The radiation return from this snow precipitation is returning DOUBLE the normal background amounts. Normal background in this area is approximately 30CPM.

Alert level is 100CPM. Today we are at 64.0CPM and 56.1CPM, plus a steady return spiking to near 0.2mR/sec on the CDV (civil defense) beta counter. 

We started out with our first real snow storm of the year 12/14/2013 , giving even higher radiation readings at 81.4CPM:

Then, on 01/02/2014 , we went down to approximately 60CPM during the 2nd snow (that story was picked up by Drudge Report, Dailymail UK, Infowars, and several other media outlets):

Then, on 01/06/2014, we had 11 inches of precipitation during a long lasting storm, radiation returned approximately 45CPM :

The last snow storm , on 01/09/2014, the count went back up to 69CPM:


This means small particles of radioactive material are indeed coming down in the precipitation. Past tests show around 30CPM in the same spot on a nice day with no precipitation. 

Several past snow storms have produced similar results.. from 60CPM to 110CPM !! Last year in 2012, did multiple tests of the snow showing alert levels were reached last year.

Today's test:

Performed one (double counter) 10 minute count, using two inspector alert geiger counters , and one CDV counter -- 655am central time , 01/16/2014 , 1/4 inch from source.

Results :


64.0 CPM (640 total) over the course of 10 minutes on one counter ... 56.1 CPM (561 total) on the second counter.

Alert level is normally at 100CPM (1000 total). 

Thus we are reaching higher and higher compared to 2011 and 2012 levels... Normal "background" count returns approximaely 20-40CPM level.

This is Fukushima 101 and is meant to make sure everyone has at least the basic understanding of all reactors , their basic effects in the pacific ocean and how the jet streams move radiation around earth . Its certainly good enough to use as a research guide or use to cover most bases on this subject in a conversation . Unlike many radioactive materials that degrade fairly rapidly, some will remain intensely poisonous for incredibly long periods. Plutonium-240 (Pu-240) has a half-life of 6,560 years. The half-life is the time it takes for radioactive decay to decrease by half. But decay does not occur at an even pace, and radioactive isotopes are dangerous for much longer – typically 10 to 20 times the length of their half-life. Pu-238 has an 88-year half-life, and is used for space vehicles despite the frequency of rocket failures. Any exploding rocket including such cargo spreads pollution far and wide. Pu-239 has a half-life of over 24,000 years, and will remain radioactive for about a half a million years. But the situation is more complicated because as Pu-239 decays it transforms to uranium-235 (U- 235), which has a half life of 600 to 700 million years. Iodine-129 has a half-life of 16 million years. Pu-244 has a half-life of 80.8 million years. U-238 has a half- life of 4.5 billion years.2

When taken into the body, isotopes of radioactive plutonium are not fully eliminated and tend to accumulate. They are deadly when sufficiently accumulated. Pu-239 was described by its co-discoverer, chemist Glenn Seaborg, as “fiendishly toxic.” In addition to terrible chemical toxicity, plutonium emits ionizing radiation. Pu-239 emits alpha, beta and gamma particles. Gamma radiation can penetrate the entire body and kill cells. Pu-239 has a robust resonance energy of 0.2 96 electron-volts that can badly damage DNA and produce birth defects that carry over generations.3 The body repairs tissues and DNA, but becomes overwhelmed when plutonium concentrates too heavily.

According to a 1975 article in New Scientist Magazine, “But if it is inhaled, 10 micrograms of plutonium-239 is likely to cause fatal lung cancer.”4 Experts estimate that Pu-239 is so noxious that only one pound would be enough to kill everyone on our planet if it were so evenly dispersed in the air that everyone inhaled it.5

Although it occurs in nature in exploding stars, almost all plutonium on Earth is man-made – the product of manufacturing nuclear weapons and energy in nuclear

power plants. Of the different forms of nuclear products, deadly Pu-239 is very abundant because it is used to make nuclear weapons and is a by-product of energy production in nuclear reactors. As part of the U.S. weapons program (between 1944 and 1988), 114 tons of Pu-239 was produced in nuclear reactors at the Hanford Works facility, in Washington state, and at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina.6 Large quantities of this Pu-239 remains at temporary storage facilities at these locations. Hanford stores about 50 million gallons of high-level radioactive nuclear and chemically hazardous wastes in underground storage tanks that were not designed for long-term storage. Roughly a third of these tanks have leaked, so that at least a million gallons of radioactive waste has reached the natural environment. Hanford is the most toxic site in the U.S., and among the most toxic places on Earth. Over 1,000 contaminated sites at Hanford have been identified. Groundwater aquifers are polluted for over 200 square miles beyond Hanford.

No less than nine pounds of Pu-239 is used to make a working nuclear bomb. As of 2015, a total of 15,695 nuclear weapons are stockpiled by nine countries.7 Some of these weapons are 35 years old, but have a shelf-life of only 25 years.8 These aging weapons are undergoing corrosion. oxidation and other detrimental changes, and they must constantly be maintained and upgraded to prevent them from becoming an immanent threat to life on Earth. They are primary war targets. The situation emphasizes the need for absolute global peace.

As of 2014, about 435 nuclear power plants have been built in 31 countries around the world.9 A great number of radioactive products, including Pu-239, are byproducts of U-235 fission occurring in the fuel rods of those plants with uranium reactors. In addition to being susceptible to natural disasters and accidents, these nuclear plants are all vulnerable to acts of war. They, too, emphasize the need for absolute global peace.

Many nuclear power plants are operating beyond their established service lives, and storing their nuclear wastes remains highly problematic. No method for the long-term storage of high-level nuclear products was available when industries began producing them to make commercial energy and weapons. Storage remains very precarious, and there is no realistic way to safeguard those that are long-lived. There are 93 different long-lived radioactive elements that are toxic for a minimum of 17,000 years, and the time scale extends for many billions of years of total decay time for some.10

The U.S. alone stores tens of thousands of tons of spent fuel containing Pu-239 and other highly radioactive materials from the various reactor cores. The quantity continues to increase worldwide as long as the nuclear plants continue to operate. About 1% of spent nuclear fuel is plutonium, and nuclear power provides about 10

percent of the world’s electricity. A uranium reactor will contain about a ton of plutonium. These figures provide a rough idea of the enormity of continual global radioactive waste accumulation. Aside from accidents like the Chernobyl disaster (which contaminated 40% of Europe), dangers include the potential for spontaneous fuel combustion and nuclear meltdown at pools containing spent fuel. The following quote from a National Research Council Panel report provides a rough idea of the growing tonnage build-up of plutonium from commercial nuclear reactors:

“New production of commercial reactor plutonium during the first half of the 1990s was about 70 MT [metric tons] per year.”11

At least four to five tons of Pu-239 are known to have been released into the environment during nuclear weapons testing.12 Much of the Pu-239 remains buried underground at the test sites. But some was released into the air during atmospheric tests, and some traveled for many miles by way of groundwater after underground tests. About two-thirds of the plutonium in the atmosphere winds up in the oceans, where it tends to sink to their bottoms and challenges sea life. The polluted sediment is disturbed and redistributed by underwater tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanoes and enormous landslides.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA):

“Residual plutonium from atmospheric nuclear weapons testing is dispersed widely in the environment. As a result, virtually everyone comes into contact with extremely small amounts of plutonium.”13

The EPA adds:

“People may inhale plutonium as a contaminant in dust. It can also be ingested with food or water. Most people have extremely low ingestion and inhalation of plutonium.”

Given that humans retain plutonium, the longer we live the more of it our bodies can accumulate. Although exposure can vary widely because of the way plutonium becomes distributed in the environment, it is has already reached high enough levels globally to cause serious concern: According to a report from the Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop of the year 2000, titled High-Sensitive Determinations of Pu and Am Content in Human Tissues:

“Now plutonium of both industrial and weapon origin is widely spread all over the world and included in the soil cycle, water cycle and the food chain, the end point of which is a human body….Now we warn about the serious hazard of dangerous accumulation of plutonium and americium in human body, especially in liver and bones….As it has been established recently, plutonium in its tetravalent state (TV+) is accumulated in human body during the whole life…”14

Since that report was published, additional plutonium isotopes have been added to our body burden. High levels of Pu-239 were released after the magnitude 9.0 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011 triggered the disaster at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi power plant. The initial venting from containment vessels into the atmosphere, the meltdown (and melt through) of three of the facility’s nuclear reactor cores, and the continual release of contaminated coolant water into the Pacific Ocean are parts and parcels of the most lethal nuclear accident to date.

After the radioactive plume from Fukuskima began circulating the Earth every 40 days or so (depositing over 1,000 different types of toxic substances on land and in water with each pass), plutonium was measured in the Pacific Ocean and its sea life, and in many U.S. cities and far beyond. A news headline from 2011 reads, “Report: 76 trillion becquerels of Plutonium-239 released from Fukushima — 23,000 times higher than previously announced.”15 The initial radioactive plume was discharged into both the air and water, and the water portion of the plume is expected to reach the U.S. coast along ocean currents by 2017. Smaller plumes continue to be generated as radioactive water is poured directly into the ocean each day. It remains to be seen how much all of this will affect marine life and the food chain along the U.S. west coast. California produces most of the fruits and vegetables for the rest of the country. The rule of thumb is that small particulates move along ocean currents, and large particulates sink to the marine sediments.

Since the accident, 300 to 400 tons of radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear complex have been pouring into the ocean every day 16 In 2014, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), in charge of the cleanup operation, began filtering 62 (out of over 1,000) radioactive isotopes from the millions of gallons going into the sea – and creating water plume after plume crossing the ocean.17 The myriad of resulting toxic water filters, which deteriorate due to radiation exposure, will require permanent storage.

The public receives conflicting information about whether plutonium will be brought under control. A 2014 headline reads, “Tepco NOT to analyze Plutonium or Uranium in bypass water before discharging to the Pacific.”18 Another report says that plutonium is among the treated radioactive contaminants.19 Another says

that the volume or output of the radioactive materials that are filtered out will be reduced by 90%.20 This can suggest that each day 90% less plutonium and certain other harmful radioactive toxins will flow into the sea than before.

A 2015 report says, “Expert: “It’s completely unsafe… impossible to remove 100s of radioactive materials” – 1,200 radionuclides, only 62 reduced.” “It’s impossible for them to remove all those hundreds of radioactive materials. They know how to remove about 62 of them, but there’s other ones that they cannot.”21

A headline from 2015 reads: “Experts: Plutonium levels 10,000,000 times normal in water below Fukushima reactors – Plutonium hit record high off coast in 2014 – “Has been transported relatively long distances” – Every sample taken from rivers flowing into Pacific had Pu-239, Pu-240, Pu-241,and Pu-242 from plant.” “...the amount of Pu isotopes directly released into the marine environment remains unknown.” The total oceanic burden is difficult to accurately estimate by taking surface or near-surface samples from flowing ocean water.22

Since it is presently impossible to know how much plutonium has or will be released into the ocean, and since so many conflicting opinions appear in the news, we can make rough estimates based on how much was in the reactor cores in the first place. According to nuclear engineer Arnie Gundersen: “A ton of plutonium was in each Fukushima reactor.”23 Three 100-ton reactor cores melted down, and a fourth is badly damaged. Of the three melted reactors, after they underwent meltdown nuclear fuel penetrated their containment vessels and melted into the ground below (a process termed ‘melt through’). Then an unprecedented event (called ‘melt out’) occurred, so that the locations of the reactor cores is unknown.

Some experts think that the mysterious highly radioactive black particulate deposited all over Fukushima, Tokyo and other parts of Japan includes the remnants of these lost cores. In theory, during the meltdowns the cores exploded with sufficient force to scatter as the black particulate (containing dangerous hot particles and other radioactive materials). This black substance matches, as best as can be determined, with components of core fuel and may include vaporized cores.24 Pu-239 and many other types of ionizing radiation are produced in reactor cores. The black particulate gradually breaks down into smaller particles, soaks into the ground and is scattered into the wind and water.

The cleanup at Fukushima is expected to take four decades, and there is no telling how far into the future highly-contaminated water will continue to pour into the ocean. It will only be stopped under certain conditions: There must be a means of preventing groundwater from entering the reactor buildings (through the basements and failed seals), so that the contaminated coolant water stops blending with the freshwater flowing in and out of the structures. The other condition is that the reactor buildings finally sufficiently cool so that coolant water is no longer

required. Four reactor buildings are being cooled by water to prevent dangerous heat build-up that can cause another explosion. So, water is constantly being poured onto the premises and becomes laced with radioactive materials, and then it is partially filtered and put directly into the ocean.

So far, humans cannot go near the melted Fukushima reactors for an hour without being exposed to lethal amounts of radiation poisoning. Robots are the only alternative for performing work. But high-level radiation quickly causes electronics components to malfunction and fail within minutes. In April of 2015, the second robot developed to work within a damaged reactor was abandoned after it failed, and the robot sent in early 2016 was also destroyed by radiation.25

The potential for typhoons, flash floods, earthquakes and tsunamis place the damaged reactor buildings at Fukushima in further jeopardy. At least one tsunami will typically hit some part of Japan every year, which is far lower than the country’s frequency of earthquakes.

Even if plutonium is brought under better control, the other nuclear contaminants being released from Fukushima, the on-going low level radioactive releases permitted around the world at uranium mines and mills, fuel fabrication plants, storage pools, casks, and trenches, etc. accumulate in the environment. Too much body burden brings on birth defects in newborns. Many Iraqi children born after depleted uranium weaponry was used during the Gulf War suffer hideous deformities. Irresponsible radioactive waste disposal is suspected of causing the significant cancer rise in southern Italy.

Five reactors in the U.S. are known to be built in earthquake zones, too.26 New earthquake faults that threaten Hanford have been discovered since it was built. In 2015, Michigan quakes initially left scientists puzzled. The situation resulted in the identification of a previously unconfirmed earthquake fault line.27 Earthquake frequency has increased dramatically in the U.S. over the past few decades, and the frequency rate has continued to increase. Tornadoes are also a threat to the safety of nuclear plants, and the Fermi 2 reactor, located between Detroit and Toledo, experienced a near miss when a tornado ran directly through two of its cooling towers in 2014.

Some physicists assert that humanity will always be plagued by the consequences of the Fukushima disaster.28 Scientists who study the ocean floor report a huge spike in unexplained sea life die-offs.29 Many thousands of tons of radioactive materials have been dumped into the Atlantic, too. The oceans are getting warmer and steadily more acidic, and oxygen is depleting at an increased pace. The entire oceanic ecosystem is threatened by over 70,000 types of pollution, and human CO2 emissions (mostly from fossil fuel combustion, transportation and industrial processes) are usually considered largely to blame.30

There are over 500 large oceanic dead zones, areas in which the oxygen concentration is so low that sea life suffocates. Science cannot predict the ultimate consequences of the changes in our oceans, but mass extinction of ocean life is predicted.31 No wonder some news sources are sounding alarm bells about the potential death of the Pacific Ocean.32 Oceans play a leading role in Earth’s overall climate, and they heavily impact the weather patterns on land. Humankind is not presently set up to endure drastic changes in climate or weather.

Solutions for Trying to Militate the Problems:

Aside from reducing greenhouse gases and balancing their levels in the atmosphere, fortifying our health as much as possible, creating better filtration systems that can gradually capture environmental pollutants of all kinds, and reducing and eliminating the release of dangerous pollutants, a number of less obvious steps can be taken to mitigate the problems described:

Diamond Film Microcircuitry:

Robots will be required to contend with the Fukushima crisis. At the very least, they should be able to seal the buildings to stop the contaminated water leakage. But they are not capable of doing such manual work because their electronics fry in minutes when exposed to the intense hard radiation. In previous articles, I have explained the superiority of electronics and computerized robotics based on Diamond Film Microcircuitry (DMF), made with single crystal diamond film. In addition to the performance of DMF discussed in the above-linked articles, synthetic diamond is used to make corrosion-hard particle radiation detectors. Diamond will tolerate being directly immersed in Pu-239 diluted in concentrated nitric acid, and it will reliably measure alpha activity.

While 2016 predictions of radiation emissions from Fukushima are not yet available, measurements from 2011 showed a release of 3696 megarads per week:33 Whereas, diamonds routinely take exposures of up to 8000 megarads during color enhancement treatments. During color enhancement, diamonds are

subjected to proton bombardment in cyclotrons. The gemstone will tolerate a tremendous amount of high-energy particle radiation of various types, too. Diamonds are subjected to neutron bombardment in nuclear reactors. They are exposed to high electron bombardment by Van de Graaff generators. These very high-energy processes are what it takes to knock carbon atoms out of place in a diamond’s crystal lattice. Diamonds remain in high energy fields for 1,000 hours or more during color enhancement. Diamond naturally acts as a heat spreader, too, and so can be used to help stabilize temperatures in reactors and cool cores faster. Given diamond’s proven properties, there is every reason to expect high performance from robots, computers and other electronic devices made of DMF.

DMF contains three-dimensional internal channels made of graphite, created to carry electricity through devices (such as sensors, robotics, computers, etc.). Graphite shows no degradation when exposed to 1,000 megarads (compare the 22 megrads per hour emitted in Fukushima’s Reactor 2), and in DMF graphite is protected by diamond that can stand even higher radiation levels. Forms of graphite are used in the first wall of the UK’s Joint European Torus, a leading fusion experiment facility. Graphite has ideal thermal and electrical properties. It has an even higher melting point than diamond (the latter of which is 6,420 °F when subjected to high pressure). The use of DMF would be a wise choice for developing robotics that can operate within high-level hard radiation environments.

Geopolymerized Rock:

Ultimately, the Fukushima buildings will be entombed like the Chernobyl nuclear reactor that exploded in 1986. But despite being entombed in 5,000 tons of concrete, Chernobyl has continuously leaked radioactive materials into the environment. These materials are pulled from local soil by trees and other plants through their root systems. This is happening because the Chernobyl reactor is entombed in ordinary Portland cement based concrete, which is inadequate for keeping toxins immobilized. The entombment structure must be frequently repaired to protect the environment.

All of the hundreds of nuclear reactors around the world must ultimately be either dismantled (a very expensive and dangerous process) or else safely entombed after they reach the end of their service lives. Successful remediation that does not leak requires that the entombment structures tolerate freeze thaw cycles and the hydrothermal conditions created when groundwater from rain, snow or floodwaters reaches hot reactors. Every reactor that is shut down to an inactive state continues to generate a significant amount of residual heat. When water comes into contact with the hot reactors, very hot water is produced that will

degrade a Portland cement concrete entombment. The result of such containment is either very prolonged environmental contamination or else very prolonged, expensive maintenance.

Geopolymerized rock (geopolymeric concrete) tolerates both hydrothermal conditions and freeze thaw cycles. It is made purely of minerals (which have a high heat tolerance) that are molecularly bound, without using heat or intense presume, to form rock-concrete. The geopolymeric binder is equivalent to silicates that make up over 55% of the Earth’s crust. The Battelle Institute, in Germany, tested geopolymerization for the European high-level nuclear waste classification. The Battelle researchers determined geopolymerization to be a “valuable alternative” to present day vitrification technologies.34 Geopolymers have excellent engineering properties. It would be wise for countries with nuclear reactors to test geopolymers for their particular radioactive waste needs, especially entombment.

Geopolymers and DMF work well together, and are the key components of the GEO-DMF System. A well-made geopolymer entombment can be expected to endure for thousands of years, during which time it would not be degraded by acid rain, salt or other environmental corrosives. DMF sensors and other devices can be built into reactor entombments to monitor internal conditions and maintenance needs. Although not a total solution to the nuclear waste problems plaguing our planet, rock-solid geopolymeric containment coupled with a dependable, automated and enduring monitoring system would be a vast improvement over the present means of securing nuclear wastes and weapons arsenals.

Both geopolymers and synthetic diamond film DMF are impervious to water, which means that flooded buildings made with geopolymeric building blocks and DMF electronics will be as good as new when they dry out. DMF electronics (three-dimensional graphite zones) are encased within the synthetic diamond film. Geopolymerized rock (rock aggregates bound by a geopolymeric binder) can be molded into multi-ton megalithic building blocks that will allow structures to withstand the strongest known hurricane winds. The GEO-DMF System can provide for fireproof, weatherproof housing and other buildings, and help fortify coastal cities against sea level rise. Wise utilization of these technologies would allow humankind to better deal with existential and more localized risks while ushering in mature phases of the coming technological revolution.

The abstract reads, “Solidification of low-level radioactive wastes obtained after biomass burning was studied. Two solidification modes using Portland cement and geopolymeric binder were tested experimentally. The strength at various hardening time compacting efficiency, and leaching rate of the resulting monolithic concretes were analyzed. The compacting efficiency in concretes prepared by two different modes is similar. At the same time, geopolymeric binder is solidified in significantly shorter period and its compression strength is several times higher, but its main advantage is chemical immobilization of strontium cations. The leaching rate under the static conditions after 28-day hardening is nearly 10- 6 g cm- 2 day- 1. Thus, substitution of geopolymerization of the clay component (in general case, aluminosilicate

material) for common solidification of low-level wastes using Portland cement is economically promising due to significant energy and resource saving. The geosynthesis can be easily realized as an environmentally safe process, yielding no liquid waste and involving no high-temperature stages with radioactive materials.”

Margaret Morris devised the GEO-DMF System (geopolymerization + diamond microcircutiry film + a power source) for robotically building virtually permanent automated solid rock outer space facilities (using indigenous resources) on the Moon, Mars, etc., as described in her book 'Moon Base and Beyond' (Scribal Arts – 2013). Margaret worked for decades as an assistant to Dr. Joseph Davidovits, the award-winning founder of the chemistry of geopolymerization (which produces artificial rock at ambient temperatures and without high pressure). She worked with the late Dr. Edward J. Zeller, Head of the former NASA-funded Radiation Physics Laboratory (RPL), at the Space Technology Center of the University of Kansas, on the testing of archaeological samples to help prove the case for ancient synthetic rock (today called geopolymers), and with Zeller and his successor at the RPL, physicist Dr. Gisela A.M. Dreschhoff (the inventors of DMF) on commercializing DMF and innovating new applications.
