Japan’s Sakurajima volcano, about 50km from the Sendai nuclear station, has erupted. Japan’s Meteorological Agency has issued an orange warning not to approach the volcano. The Sendai nuclear plant was the first to be restarted after 2011’s Fukushima disaster following the implementation of new safety rules. It’s built to withstand a tsunami of 15 meters, well below 2011’s peak tsunami height of 40 meters. Friday’s eruption, while dramatic, was average compared to Sakurajima’s past eruptions, Kyoto University volcanologist Kazuhiro Ishihara told NHK. The mountain’s last major eruption was in September. |
