Edited: Season one posts
Many of us are watching "Jericho" and I think it would be to learn something in the event of a pandemic.......or perhaps another diaster. This is my reason for watching. I asked my son last night on the second airing "what have we learned"? and thought it would be a good idea to list any/all changes we are making in prepping and preparedness due to this series.
I have learned:
1. More food already in place
2.Have a diaster plan written out and discussed with my family.
Please add your thoughts!

I learned I need more Coleman fuel and duct tape. I learned I know little or nothing on how to protect my family from Nuclear attach...How long do you have to stay in the basement...My basement smells like a basement...Even with the dehumidifier on...Yuck...I'll be cleaning that little but little...
Stupid question? Why were the afraid of the rain? Does it carry Nuclear fall out?

First, if your basement smells(from dampness?) you can clean it. We washed ours down with water/bleach (Make sure you have GOOD venelation and use a MASK!). I also have painted the walls with water proof paint, again use a mask and have really good venelation! After scrubbing make sure you give a long while for the bleach to dry before painting. PLEASE ask someone at the paint store how long.
Second, the storm in Jericho contained fallout. Getting some Potassium Iodadte would be a good idea. I am not sure how long.....I would think you would need a device to measure the radiation levels?????

Also (I used to waterproof basements for a living) check your grading outside so that is slopes nicely away from your basement and extend all downspouts out 10 feet if you can. I found that if you don't have air vents in the basement they make a huge difference. Installing a vent at a low point on the air return on the furnace helps as well as one or two on the air supply vents will increase air circulation. I've even drilled small holes on the vents at the rear of my crawl space to keep air moving. Also people really need to consider what will happen in their basements if the power does go down. My basement will leak from the rising water table with no sump pump running but I have a floor drain to our sewer system as long as that still accepts flow I'll be OK, battery back ups will run down in a couple days max with no power to recharge. People with overhead sewers will be screwed without a generator to run the pumps. So plan to protect your preps as well. Trust me without power there will be no such thing as a watertight dry basement.

I didn't have a chance to watch this one yet, but it looks good. Although, duct taping the windows could be a bad idea. Carbon monoxide poisoning would be a huge issue because of the furnace. You can buy a tester for around $30.00.

Why were they afraid of the rain?
The small particulate matter in the atmosphere will come down with the rain drops, so the rain will be radioactive to a degree. Wherever water pools around your home after a storm, is where the radiation will be concentrated.
Potassium Iodine blocks absorption of radioactive iodine into the thyroid, in an attempt to prevent thyroid cancer. The radioactive iodine has a half life of 8 days. so, 1 kg of material is .5 kg of material after 8 days, .25kg after 16 days, etc.
Strontium-90 and cesium-137, have a half life of 30 years. Plutonium-239 has a half-life of 24,400 years. Just face it, if someone cooks off a nuke, those in the immediate fallout zone are screwed.
Here's a good site to read up on the effects of a nuclear detonation:

I don't think we should rely on plastic sheeting. Radiation comes in alpha, beta and gamma particles. Some are harmful if inhaled, some, like Gamma particles can penetrate your body. Plastic sheeting will not stop gamma particles, you may need several feet of earth or concrete to stop them. There is a lot of info out there on sheltering that we should probably read up on. |

after last nights episode, I'm thinking more about amunition. Yikes! Also about burying my preps. To tell the truth though, I would have a hard time turning anyone away, just my nature.

My wife pointed out that the escaped convicts stolen police uniforms fit as if they were custom tailored for them but would never fit the two officers tied up in the cruiser's trunk.

This probably brings up a good topic of discussion....regarding prepping for nuclear attack. Does anyone have any links or sites which discuss preparing for such a disaster? Thanks for this thread..:) I haven't watched Jericho...but, think I might start. Sincerely, JD

Something I have learned from Jericho:
First thing after the bombs go off, find the weaselly power-hungry lawyer guy and do away with him. If you don't, he'll be nothing but trouble for the rest of the series. :) |

I had a little ice cream and tomato juice w/lemon.
The character development needs work. The asian looking fellow with the map of flashing bombed American cities behind him was interesting. Did I hear somewhere?....Gone are the days that we just sit and wait to be attacked. Today I bought more canned goods and applesauce w/apricots.

I'm finding a few things interesting about the series, like the fact that it was a young man that suggested storing the meat in the ice machines in the premier episode, and that same character going out on his own to find the train.
The fact that planes landed on the highway was NOT a shocker. That was the intent of the Eisenhower Interstate highway system. In fact, if you actually look up bill that created the interstate system, you'll find that there is a requirement for stretches of straight and level roadway every few miles, so that in the case of an emergency, civilian or military aircraft can have alternative landing strips.
Me thinks that the black ex-st.louis-cop is more than meets the eye. Survivalist? Quite possibly. Notice the rolling 'gun safe' with automatic rifles, and the NBC gear that he knew how to use.
As far as general preparedeness goes, this series seems to be dramatic with a touch of accuracy. I doubt that the rainstorm would have lasted as little as it did on the show, BUT, one does have to move the story along i guess.
With the lack of news about BF, i'm wondering if this show isn't subconscioussly designed to make everyone aware of potential upcoming disasters like BF or a nuclear attack?

I saw all that meat and thought I need more canning jars to try to preserve as much meat as you can if the power goes out. It's funny how you notice the little things like: They left the lanterns and lights on after the BQ was over...No that just wouldn't happen...

I learned that the mayor is the villian from Deadwood. You can learn a lot from HBO's "Deadwood" about survival in tough times, too. Mostly that you need to kill your foe and feed him to the hogs before he kills you.

Are the rest of you seeing the emergency preparedness ad that comes on during the show? It features kids telling us we should have three days of food & water stocked and a family plan if there is an emergency.

Happy camper, that's funny, I was laughing about the light left on
too. Nobody would do that in real life. There were coleman
lanterns all over, burning for nobody. The city hall had lights
on on the daytime. Also, when they had their 'last supper' BBQ,
they all looked just a bit too jovial for my taste. Do they not realize that life as they know it is OVER??
Yes, the guy from st. louis has some kind of story. can't wait to find out what it is. I guess they are trusting that the food train isn't radioactive?? I wish the kid hadn't found this train, its too easy . . . in real life, would they be so fortunate? A bit too hollywood for me, was wanting the food story...I guess we'll have to wait a few more weeks... |

HappyCamper, regarding wet and damp basements...if you can afford it get that paint that is for basement walls that helps keep the moisture out...I think this paint can only be put on non-paint blocks...we did it when we built our house "just in case" or call someone who knows about basements to get a free "quote" on what needs to be done...at least you can get some ideas what can be done...that is valuable space...good to know what you can do even if you can't do it right at the moment...just my 2 cents:O)

Dumb question - answer please. Watching the show, the cars that were driving down the highways stopped because of the EMP from the bombs. Now is shows working vehicles. If a car or TV or any electronic device is off when an EMP blast occurs, will it be ok? And by the way, where are all their generators and alternative energy sources? Think there would be at least one in town to protect the food or did I miss something?

I agree,,,,the BBQ was a bit cheesey. But there would be alot of people who would take this situation lightly. The teens in the movie act as most would, only concerned about themselves. Many adults act that way now when we try to inform them of the bird-flu.
I do like the man who had weapons stored at a storage place(great tip) and decided to bury them behind a fake wall.....another great idea. For those of you who have no room for storage at your home a storage center would be a great idea............
I wonder about drinking iodine???? Would it have the same effect as Potassium Iodate? It certainly is much cheaper to buy.
For me the most stupid part was when everyone left the shelters and WALKED THROUGH THE CONTAMINATED water! A certain NO-NO! I would think you are only spreading radiation.........
The ones who took refuge in the storm cellar on the farm seem to have been in the best place....I would have stayed right there.
I still believe there a lessons to learn from the show.

I don't know, I actually thought the BBQ was somewhat realistic. Sort of a stress reliever after the grim times they'd been through. You know how people in a tense situation will crack up laughing over something that's barely funny, just to disperse some of the tension. Plus, they must have bonded some, as many people will do after living through a life-or-death situation.

Two questions I did not see answered.
How long to stay in you "bunker" before coming outside. Depending on where you are at, you can start coming outside for short periods of time, after three days. You really need a radiation meter, yes they are expensive, but here is a home made one. http://www.ki4u.com/kfm.htm Or buy the book Nuclear Survival Skills. Will a car run after an EMP blast? In short....No. The older cars before computers and electronics will be easily fixed, you may have to replace the points and condenser, but should be fine. You can buy a newer model and change it some... I had a 84 Chevy 4X4 that I replaced the computerised distributor with a plain electronic one, bypassing the computer. If something did happen, a simple replacement of the distributor (or internals) and maybe a few other small items, and I would be good to go. An older model diesel would be great as there are few things to happen, and also would not stop running when an EMP blast happens. New cars and trucks, will be junk until a major rebuild of the electrical system can be done. |

To add.... a lot of the items around your house will be toasted as well, check and see what is electronic that you really need, and build a faraday cage large enough for the items, or extra items you might need.

Hi Mountianwinds, I would like to start looking for and older model truck or car. How old should it be? Is there anything else I should look for while considering a purchase? Any help would be appreciated. I thinkI I would perfer a disel pick up truck. Did they ever make disel pickup trucks?

The best would be a model before the electronics came out, I guess the year model would depend on the make of the vehicle.
As a rule, maybe mid 70s on back. And these are so much eaiser to work on. And yes, diesels did come out in pickups. They keep running because they work off of compression instead of spark... and the fuel pump was manual, not electric as in newer cars and trucks. |

What do you think of the maps? I am trying to seriously picture someone
striking Concord NH with a Nuke bomb... I can't. And the fall out pattern? I thought the prevailing winds are west to east and the maps look the opposite, perhaps it's because I have a cold today :(

More on EMP:
Electromagnetic Pulse will fry any UNSHIELDED electronics. It is possible to shield such things, but it's rather expensive for a civilian application, to the best of my knowledge. Any car with electronic anything beyond a radio will stop dead in the water. Or on the road as the case may be. The EMP fries circuit pathways and transistors. Since pretty much any integrated ciruit is nothing more than a collection of miniaturized transistors, well, you can well imagine that the chipsets in vehicles will be useful maybe for playing poker, but not much else.
Ironically enough, anything that has vacuum tubes instead of transistors will survive an EMP. Sometimes older tech is better.
As for the EMP itself, it is a natural and unavoidable by-product of a nuclear detonation. Even an underground nuke test, will have an EMP wave, though since it is underground, it won't affect much.
I remember reading an article once on nuclear warfare, that speculated that an enemy attach on the US would call for several high level nuclear blasts (like upper atmosphere) to spread the effect of EMP far and wide. The radiation effects would be minimal in such a blast, but our electronic world would stop dead.
Just food for thought.

Tonight's broadcast was interesting.....I can't wait to see what the one man's story is.
I was quite bothered by the people using all the lanterns in the bar and burning up so many candles. They should be conserving.
I also am wondering if any companies are paying for their products to be advertised on the show. In every single episode so far they show "Dinty Moore" beef stew cans...........just curiuos,a good prep item.
