Sustaining a City in a Long-Term Power Outage

http://earlywarn.blogspot.com/2013/06/sustaining-city-in-long-term-power.html

the conclusions drawn

"

.Thus the picture is that for a power outage of days or less, people have gas in their tanks, food in their cupboards, etc. But for outages beyond that duration, the means to supply the populace with food, fuel, and water is not survivable and will rapidly degrade, and people will quickly be reduced to "refugee" status - needing either to leave to somewhere better equipped, or to rely on emergency measures like water buffalo trucks and food handouts at central distribution points."

personally speaking

I think that if and when panic sets in

fuel, water and food are gonna be gone in less than 24 hours

numerous studies have shown that in a major pandemic

businesses can expect at least 40% or more of their employees to be absent

either they will be sick themselves, home taking care of sick family members

or just too afraid to come to work

Think Carrington type event or EMP when you think of long power outages cause those would probably be the main cause.

Funny you brought this up because today I clocked how far I am from water sources. I have three major sources: reservoirs, a river and several streams. The farthest one is 6 miles and they all get closer as the crow flies.

I plan on using my water filtration system if things go long term.

I will filter through coffee filters remove debris, bleach solution, then a Berkey water filter. If I feel the need I will boil the water before drinking or using just in case. But with Bleach and the Berkey I believe the water will be very safe.

I feel sorry for those who do not have my resources. 3 minutes without air, 3 days without water, 3 weeks without food.

and if municipal sewer systems go down

you can bet your life that surface water sources will quickly become contaminated

Yep Satori, that is why I have dry bleach and a Berkey Water filter system and for good measure I can also boil what comes out of the Berkey. I have extra filters for the Berkey along with Arsenic filters because I am in Colorado...gold mines by product is Arsenic.

Try to think about all problems. Shoot I figure there will be dead bodies in the water full if virus since people like animals will look for water no matter how sick. Dead bodies and poo in the water guess I will see how well my process will work!

I work in public utilities and disaster planning so I pay special attention to these issues. I can say, if we have a Carrington event, it would be the end of the world as we know it. In a long term power outage, most cities would become death traps within a week. No water, no food, no heat. The issue with a Carrinton event is the scale. Something regional is difficult enough to deal with, a hemisperical or global event would be unimaginable. Many of the large transformers, switches, and generators have lead times of 6 months to get parts or new ones made. That is during times of normal demand. Increase demand by a thousandfold (Conservatively) and combine that with the fact that the manufacturing plants will likely be damaged and without power, and it could take years to get any parts.
Without power, the sewage treatment plants go down. The water plants and pumping stations are down. Besides a raging, highly transmissable pandemic, long term, widespread power outages scare me the most.

My laptop crashed Thursday nite.  I get momentary connection.  It's a taste of being in the dark.  I wouldn't mind lack of lights or fridgeration, but no internet to keep me informed is the worst. I'll be offline till next week.  This is going to be difficult. See you later.....
