I will not feel offended if people don't read this, I know I am being long-winded, but I have a lot to say.

Our own EdwinSm posted a few of the common complications of measles here:   http://www.avianflutalk.com/portland-measles-outbreak-grows_topic38763_post275388.html?KW=#275388 He did not mention blindness which is as common as hearing loss. Those statistics fail to mention the eyesight, hearing, cognition and motor co-ordination damage of a more minor type. Go deaf and make the statistics, acquire a hearing aid and remain uncounted.

Here in the healthy, rich, well-fed Western world, measles kills a little over 1 in 1,000. Among the sick and dirt poor it is closer to 1 in a 100. In areas undergoing famine it can rise as high as 1 in 10. How many of the unvaccinated travel there? Would you risk killing so many?

Do you all like Roald Dhal? His eldest daughter (healthy and only unvaccinated as the vaccine was unavailable back then) died of measles encephalitis. "James and the Giant Peach" is dedicated to her.

Thiomersal is one of the reasons so many go unvaccinated. The mercury in it IS a poison. Mind you, you get a lot more from a nice juicy swordfish or tuna steak. Miss one meal and save a life perhaps? There are poisonus preservatives in your bread, bacon and salami too. (propitionates, nitrates, BHA and BHT) Do you avoid these? How about nutrasweet? (aspartame - which breaks down in the body to methyl alchol You don't have to be a wino to go blind these days) Do you use it?

There is a fairly accurate article on thiomersal in Wikipedia* here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thiomersal_and_vaccines True, it would be better if it had all been removed from our vaccines (and it's easy for me to say: "Go for it!" when I live in Scotland where there are always alternatives) But at worst, the vaccine never killed anyone and at best measles kill 1/1000 - and goes on killing those it is spread to.

Anyway, there are currently several measles outbreaks across America, stupid, pointless, dangerous, avoidable outbreaks. Here is an example:   https://eu.democratandchronicle.com/story/news/2019/02/01/rare-local-measles-cases-among-unvaccinnated-kids-all-linked/2742724002/. Even if these kids kill no-one and are lucky enough to avoid serious complications, they will suffer from the disease itself. Measles is the only childhood illness I remember. I remember it because it was the worst. "Oh, Mummy I do hate the measles!"

The debate is on again about parents rights to refuse to vaccinate their child. https://eu.democratandchronicle.com/story/news/2019/02/01/rare-local-measles-cases-among-unvaccinnated-kids-all-linked/2742724002/ and I say no, make it compulsory. Generally, I believe in freedom. But I do not believe in anyone having the right to risk the life of someone else and there are a few who cannot vaccinate. Their own life yes, but this is one of the most infectious diseases known to man. Measles is airborne. Ebola has a smaller Ro for God's sake! How many of you would jump at the chance of a dose of that vaccine?

So why not?

[This is the latest from the outbreak in Clark county.]

43 confirmed measles cases in Clark Co. outbreak, including child who had one MMR vaccine

by KATU Staff

Saturday, February 2nd 2019

A measles outbreak near Portland has sickened dozens of people in Oregon and Washington, with several more cases suspected, and public health officials scrambling to contain the virus say low vaccination rates are making the situation worse. Clark County Public Health said Sunday, Jan. 28, 2019, that the majority of the cases involve children younger than 10.

VANCOUVER, Wash. –Health officials say there are now 43 confirmed cases of measles in the Clark County outbreak, including one person who had one dose of the MMR vaccine.

Authorities say they are also looking at 8 suspected cases of the virus.

Clark County Public Health said most of the patients are children under 10 years old, ten cases involve kids ages 11 to 18 and one case is in an adult between the ages of 19 and 29.

Of the cases, 37 people were not immunized and five cases are not verified to have had the vaccine. One of the patients received one of the two doses of the MMR vaccine.

The CDC says one dose of the MMR vaccine is 93 percent effective, while having two doses of the vaccine is 97 percent effective.

Children typically receive the first MMR vaccine at one year to 15 months old, and the second dose from 4 to 6 years of age.

The patients visited several public places while contagious - including the Portland International Airport and Moda Center - and could have exposed thousands of other people to the virus. | FULL LIST OF EXPOSURE SITES: https://www.clark.wa.gov/public-health/measles-investigation

"Measles can be so contagious that you can be in a room, and if you’re susceptible, two hours after someone with measles left, and still get the disease," said Dr. Alan Melnick, the director of public health for Clark County.

Measles symptoms begin with a mild fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes, followed by a rash.

If you or your child went to one of the possible exposure sites and show signs of measles, call your health care provider before coming in so they can limit exposing anyone else in the waiting room.

Oregon residents can visit the Oregon Health Authority website to find out if they're vaccinated.

"Most people are immunized, but again measles does have a way of finding people who aren’t. It’s the most contagious human disease we know about," Dr. Paul Lewis with Multnomah County Health said.

Dr. Lewis says if you have a child under the age of 1 that you are concerned about, you can talk to your healthcare provider about getting the vaccine early. You should also check with any daycare your child attends to make sure they require their workers to be up to date on immunizations.

If you have any further questions about the measles, call your local health department:
