The first case of MRSA in poultry in the UK has been found in turkeys and chickens on a farm in Norfolk according to the Department of Health (DH). A spokesman said that two thirds of the turkeys on the farm, which hasn't been named, were found to be infected. It is thought that hundreds of turkeys have already been sold to local retail outlets and farm gate sales. The farmer is cooperating. The DH says the risk to the public is very low. The spokesman said the disease "rarely caused disease in humans" and if it did would involved a mild skin infection which cleared up quickly. There is a risk to poultry workers coming into contact with
infected birds and a far lower risk to those who bought birds carrying
the bacterial infection. Medclinician |

Extremely misleading thread title. MERS-CoV is a completely different disease than MRSA. Please change

The truth is that poultry is already loaded with pathogens anyway. Watch any cooking show on TV and see how often the presenter washes their hands and disinfects surfaces after preparing uncooked chicken. The situation is even worse over here in the US because poultry are left in a chill bath for an hour or so when the unfortunate creatures reach the end of the processing line to increase their weight (a practice banned in other parts of the world). The birds that defecate on themselves as they're hung by the feet prior to being killed eventually contribute to the fecal soup they all end up floating around in. As they soak it up to add valuable weight, the fecal matter penetrates every part of the carcass.
Buying poultry that's not contaminated is literally a crap shoot (sorry...) with almost 90% of samples tested by the USDA in 2009 showing fecal contamination (a good indicator of the presence of E.Coli). It's not surprising that the level of contamination isn't widely publicized, because who would buy a frozen bird if they knew there was an 87% chance that a disgruntled employee had smeared poop on it (and inside it) before putting it in the freezer? Same difference when you think about it. Enjoy your Turkey Day, guys http://www.fakefoodwatch.com/2013/07/supermarket-chickens-laced-with.html |
